  • Knowledge Transfer Between Russian and Western Firms
    Michailova and Jormanainen “Knowledge transfer between Russian and Western firms: Whose absorptive capacity is in question?”: A reply Michailova and Jormanainen (forthcoming) are trying to challenge the mainstream (or, rather, expressed in rare papers on Russian management in A and B-level journals) conviction that the “deep and wide stream of Western business knowledge is flowing to Russia, but due to the limited absorptive capacity of Russian firms that flow does not allow to irrigate properly the somehow virgin land of the 6th largest world economy, but creates instead swamps and “quagmires” that engulf even the most ambitious initiatives to enhance value creation”. They put forward three major arguments: Soviet experience and knowledge is still valid and forms a background for actions of Russian firms; Soviet experience serves as a “sieve” for cautious imitation and selective acquisition of Western business models and management techniques; Some aspects of genuine Russian business techniques should be properly used by foreign companies operating in Russia, and also may have wider impact on international practices of leading MNCs. Michailova and Jormanainen have strong personal interests in defending such arguments. As by their own words “Half and a third of [their] lives respectively so far has been split between living in [their] native countries and the West”, they are proud to demonstrate that the Western education they received is properly used to create knowledge valuable to the global academic audience. We do not intend to attack their arguments as we consider them correct in many aspects. However, we must admit that Michailova and Jormanainen presented a complex phenomenon of knowledge transfer in a rather simplistic way.

CENSORSHIP AND SELF- CENSORSHIP AMONG RUSSIAN MEDIA PERSONALITIES AND REPORTERS IN THE 2010S ELISABETH SCHIMPFOSSL THE UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL ILYA YABLOKOV THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER Abstract: This article examines questions of censorship, self-censorship and conformism on Russia’s federal television networks during Putin’s third presidential term. It challenges the idea that the political views and images broadcast by federal television are imposed coercively upon reporters, presenters and anchors. Based on an analysis of interviews with famous media personalities as well as rank-and-file reporters, this article argues that media governance in contemporary Russia does not need to resort to coercive methods, or the exertion of self-censorship among its staff, to support government views. Quite the contrary: reporters enjoy relatively large leeway to develop their creativity, which is crucial for state-aligned television networks to keep audience ratings up. Those pundits, anchors and reporters who are involved in the direct promotion of Kremlin positions usually have consciously and deliberately chosen to do so. The more famous they are, the more they partake in the production of political discourses. Putin, not Trump, is the most dangerous person in the world. Trump is just a lackey, a small-time crook and bit-time liar whom Putin is using to attack the USA. The problem is not that there is no evidence of Trump-Putin collusion, the problem is that there is too much of it. I have added some background about the motive of Russia's interference in US politics. In my opinion, it was not only a general attempt at undermining US institutions (that came later) but originally it was a determined effort to make sure that Hillary Clinton did not become president. Putin feared her more than anyone else. For those who have NOT followed this page from the beginning: this website was one of the first to talk about the Trump-Russia collusion at a time when few dared mention the Steele dossier. Just to be very clear: this is not about whether Russia's interference changed the results of the election (i personally think that the FBI investigation into Clinton's email server had a much bigger impact). It is about Putin's strategy to attack the USA, and, secondly, it is about the extent of Trump's collaboration with Putin. And, just to be fair, Putin's Russia is not the only country that ever interfered in US politics.

The most flamboyant, Boris Berezovsky, claimed in 1996 that seven bankers controlled fifty percent of the Russian economy. Having acquired massive oil and metals enterprises in rigged privatizations, these tycoons exploited Yeltsin’s ill-health to meddle in politics and lobby their interests. Two served briefly in government. Another, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, summed up the conventional wisdom of the time in a 1997 interview: “Politics is the most lucrative field of business in Russia. And it will be that way forever.”1 A decade later, most of the original oligarchs have been tripping over each other in their haste to leave the political stage, jettisoning properties as they go. From exile in London, Berezovsky announced in February he was liquidating his last Russian assets. The cut-off price and the weighted average price amounted to 93.11% of a face value. The cut-off yield and the weighted average yield stood at 7.07%. Demand for the bonds totaled RUB 83.7 bln. Company News MTS raises stake to 100% in 6 local fixed-line operators On April 15, 2021 it was stated that Major Russian mobile operator MTS had exercised a call option with provider of broadband and digital TV services Zelenaya Tochka Group to buy out the remaining 49% of the group’s capital in six local fixed-line network operators. Altogether, this deal will provide opportunities to more than one million Russian households to expand access to advanced solutions from across the MTS digital ecosystem. In February 2020, MTS acquired a 51% stake in Zelenaya Tochka Group – comprised of 13 local fixed-line Internet providers – via an agreement that included a provision for a three-year call option on the remaining share capital.
