GOODING PhD 2012 DESIGN HISTORY IN BRITAIN FROM THE 1970s to 2012: CONTEXT, FORMATION, AND DEVELOPMENT Joanne Victoria Gooding M.A. (RCA) A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Northumbria at Newcastle for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2012 Abstract This thesis discusses the development of design history in Britain from the 1970s to 2012, arguing that it is a clear example of a network of relationships, intersections of ideas, approaches and intellectual influences that are representative of the complexity of current academic practice. This study engages with discourses and debates concerning attempts to define academic recognition in a subject area that resists drawing boundaries and is by its very nature multidisciplinary. The period with which this study is concerned is characterised by considerable change in society, the approach to education and academic endeavour, and the consumption of histories. All of these changes have significance for the formation and development of design history, in addition to its contribution to academic practice and its impact beyond narrow scholarly circles. This thesis acknowledges that the overlapping and interweaving of threads of knowledge, methodology, approaches and paradigms is a feature of contemporary academic practice, and applies the concept of communities of practice to discussion of the multiple types of scholarship that have constituted design history. In doing this no claim is made for design history as a distinct academic discipline but rather it is discussed as a much broader academic network. Additionally, the thesis offers an evaluation of the role of this network, including the Design History Society as a distinct community of practice, in the context of developments in education, academic changes, museums and publishing. This leads to a consideration of the various arenas in which the products of design history are consumed thus demonstrating the importance and impact of the network outside academia. Abstract The development of modern European scholarship and art, more marked.in Austria and Germany, had produced by the early part of the twentieth century challenging innovations in art and the principles of art historical scholarship. Art history, in its quest to explicate the connections between art and mind, time and place, became a discipline that combined or connected various fields of enquiry to other historical moments. Hitler's accession to power in 1933 resulted in a major diaspora of Europeans, mostly German Jews, and one of the most critical dispersions of intellectuals ever recorded. Their relocation to many western countries, including Australia, resulted in major intellectual and cultural developments within those societies. By investigating selected case studies, this research illuminates the important contributions made by these individuals to the academic and cultural studies in Melbourne. Dr Ursula Hoff, a German art scholar, exiled from Hamburg, arrived in Melbourne via London in December 1939. After a brief period as a secretary at the Women's College at the University of Melbourne, she became the first qualified art historian to work within an Australian state gallery as well as one of the foundation lecturers at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Melbourne. While her legacy at the National Gallery of Victoria rests mostly on an internationally recognised Department of Prints and Drawings, her concern and dedication extended to the Gallery as a whole.

A simplistic stereotypical dyad of metropolitan authority and provincial deference is examined and evidence given for a more complex flow between Museum and regions. The Introduction outlines the thesis aims and the Department’s role in the dissemination of art and design. The thesis is structured around questions examining the historical significance of Circ, the display and installation of Circ’s regional exhibitions, and the flow of influence between regions and museum. Context establishes Circ not as a straightforward continuation of Cole’s Victorian mission but as historically embedded in the post-war period.

The myriad public functions of a modern museum are dependent on sound knowledge of the objects in the museum's care. Research allows the Victoria and Albert Museum to play a role with the creative industries; it underpins education programmes that render the collections meaningful to school children, students and distance learners; it enables the giving of pleasure to a mass audience. Scholarship, alongside collections management and conservation, guarantees the continued prosperity of the nation's heritage. This report covers a three-year period in which hundreds of exhibitions, books, journal articles and electronic publications have made available a vast amount of scholarly material. Victoria and Albert Museum specialists on the art and design of the last thousand years, across all continents, have continuously published ground-breaking research in significant quantities. Apart from the individual efforts of the Museum's major scholars, perhaps a particularly impressive aspect of the research effort in this period has been the collaborative projects undertaken with universities and museums in Britain and abroad. They include topics as varied as Gothic art, historic tapestries, Anglo-Indian furniture, the Victorians, modern product design and electronic media. As research becomes more interdisciplinary, and technology becomes more central, so the methods of research progress. This report shows that a powerful and varied research culture remains one of the distinguishing characteristics of the V&A. It reports on the last years of the 20th century. I think we can all be assured that the research effort will continue and will enlighten the new century as much as it did the old one.

    GRAHAM REYNOLDS Arthur Graham Reynolds 1914–2013 GRAHAM REYNOLDS (the ‘Arthur’ was firmly suppressed from an early age) was born in Highgate on 10 January 1914. His father, Arthur T. Reynolds, a monu- mental mason, made the tombstones and crosses for Highgate cemetery, priding himself on his lettering. When Graham was about ten, his father died as the result of a war wound and his mother, Eva (née Mullins), daughter of a bank clerk, married Percy Hill, a property manager, who became mayor of Holborn in the 1930s. He was, according to Reynolds, a ‘bad tempered brute’, but he had the saving grace of having acquired a collection of mezzotints which provided the beginnings of a visual education in the home. Furthermore, the family’s move to 82 Gower Street, so near to the British Museum, encouraged Graham’s early interest in art. From Grove House Lodge, a local preparatory school, he obtained a schol- arship to Highgate School. The years there were largely unmemorable, except for the fact that one of the teachers was descended from Sir George Beaumont, Constable’s patron. At school, as he later recollected, he did not suffer unduly from being known as ‘the brain’ and ‘the swot’. In 1932, he went to Cambridge on a maths scholarship at Queens’ College. After the first year he switched to English, but something of the mathematician’s precision remained with him all his life. He used to say that if there had been a faculty of art history in Cambridge at the time, he would have joined that.

    The Organisation and Reception of Eastern Bloc Exhibitions on the British Cold War 'Home Front' c.1956-1979 VERITY CLARKSON' A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2010 The University of Brighton in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum ABSTRACT This thesis investigates government-sponsored exhibitions originating in the USSR and Eastern Europe held in Britain between 1956-1979. These incoming manifestations of cultural diplomacy were a locus for cultural exchange during the ideological conflict of the Cold War, providing temporary public spaces in which cultural artefacts from the eastern bloc - perceived as an unfamiliar, isolated and rival territory - were displayed and responded to. This research scrutinises the organisation and reception of these usually reCiprocal displays of art, historical artefacts, and commercial goods on the British Cold War 'home front' ~ Taking a British perspective on these exhibitions, this thesis investigates three main research areas. Firstly, organisation: it asks how and why these exhibitions took place and analyses the roles and aims of various British agencies, galleries and museums in facilitating these displays.     MEMORIAL TEXT NARRATIVES IN BRITAIN c.1890-1930 by SONIA LETITIA BATTEN A thesis submitted to The University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Medieval and Modern History School of Historical Studies The University of Birmingham March 2011 ABSTRACT This thesis seeks to explore the memorial texts that developed as a result of the First World War, composed primarily by those whose sons, husbands and fathers had died between 1914 and 1918. Visitors to the military cemeteries of the First World War are interested to read the inscriptions left by the bereaved at the foot of individual headstones, yet this aspect of post-war commemoration is still largely unexplored. This thesis seeks to explore these responses: by considering the process through which the bereaved were permitted to select inscriptions, the sources from which they derived consolation, and the narratives that they pursued throughout the post-war period to 1930. Parallel to these permanent headstone inscriptions are considered the ephemeral commemoration of the newspaper in memoriam column, a source of material that has received scant attention but which promises a rich glimpse into the conventions of early-twentieth-century mourning – conventions which are still resonant almost a century after the First World War broke out. To contextualise post- war responses, the thesis introduces commemorative practices used to remember those who died in the South African War and in the sinking of the Titanic, many of which were used again in the aftermath of 1918. Taking Mieke Bal’s theory of exposition as a starting point, it explores how ‘gestures of showing’ have been used to frame art-oriented ceramic practice. Examining the gaps between the statements these gestures have made about and through ceramics, and the objects they seek to expose, it challenges the idea that ceramics as a category of artistic practice has ‘expanded.’ Instead, it forwards the idea that ceramics is an integrative practice, through which practitioners produce works that can be read within a range of artistic (and non-artistic) frameworks.

    ‘With Glory, Rather Than Gore’: V&A Bomb Damage and the Shaping of British War Memory Petra Seitz RCA/V&A History of Design Masters Dissertation October 25, 2019 21,613 Words Abstract This dissertation examines the evolution in appearance and meaning of the bomb-damaged Victoria and Albert Museum Exhibition Road façade. It tracks and analyzes changes made to the site between its initial damaging in 1941 through its current appearance in 2019. Drawing upon conceptual frameworks of memory work and banal nationalism from James E.
