Hattink en A.M. van Lynden-de Bruïne Inleiding In de persoon van Johan Radermacher de Oude (1538-1617) komt de verbinding tot stand tussen een calvinistisch getint humanisme en internationaal koopmanschap. Hij hoort zowel tot de geleerden rond de drukker Christoffel Plantijn als tot de kooplieden die actief waren in de internationale firma van Gillis Hooftman. Het grootste deel van zijn leven was hij ook nauw betrokken bij het wel en wee van de gereformeerde kerk, die hij diende als ouderling en diaken. Naast zijn omgang met humanisten en kooplieden onderhield hij nauwe vriendschapsbanden met beeldende kunstenaars en dichters. De bewijzen van zijn relaties met al deze personen zijn te vinden in brieven en ander materiaal in handschrift. Een van de belangrijkste bronnen in dit verband is het Album J. Rotarii, een verzamelhandschrift dat berust in de Gentse universiteitsbibliotheek. Het merendeel van de handschriften in deze verzameling komt uit het bezit van Johan Radermacher de Oude. De Latijnse vorm van die naam is Joannes Rotarius. Daarvan is de benaming van het verzamelhandschrift afgeleid. Dit handschrift bevat brieven en literaire bijdragen van zijn vrienden, en ook afschriften van handschriften die in zijn eigen kring circuleerden. De vroegste stukken dateren uit de jaren zestig van de zestiende eeuw, de jongste uit het eerste kwart van de zeventiende eeuw. Het Album J. Rotarii bevat stukken die de eigen familiegeschiedenis van de Radermachers betreffen, verder ongepubliceerde gedichten van de hand van de schilder-rederijker Lucas d'Heere (de leermeester van Karel van Mander), gedichten voor Lucas d'Heere door Marnix van St. Aldegonde (waaronder de oudstbewaarde versie van Marnix' Nederlandse vertaling van enkele psalmen), een Latijnse vertaling van het boek der Spreuken naar de Hebreeuwse grondtekst door de uit Valenciennes afkomstige humanist Joannes Vivianus, een gedicht van Hugo de Groot voor diens zwager Jan van Reigersbergh, allerlei schotschriften, een Latijns gedicht over de vernietiging van de Spaanse Armada, geschreven door Théodore de Bèze (ooit Calvijns rechterhand) en voorzien van een Engelse vertaling, en nog veel meer merkwaardige teksten. In sommige gevallen betreft het hier zelfs de oudstbekende versie van de desbetreffende tekst, zoals in het geval van de bijdragen van Marnix. Wat onmiddellijk opvalt in deze verzameling is het meertalige karakter ervan. De meeste stukken zijn weliswaar in het Latijn gesteld, maar een flink aantal is geschreven in een van de moderne talen, zoals Nederlands, Frans, Engels, Italiaans, Spaans en Duits. In veel mindere mate treft men ook Grieks, Hebreeuws en Arabisch aan. De meest recente gegevens over Johan Radermacher en zijn album zijn te vinden in de volgende studies en tekstuitgaven: K. Aan Johan Radermacher wordt ook de oudste Nederlandse grammatica toegeschreven, een handschrift dat - naast een taalkundig gezien bijzonder interessante voorrede - in feite slechts een aanzet tot een grammatica bevat. Comprising illuminated manuscripts as well as independent miniatures, the works at the center of this study provide novel insight into Hoefnagel’s practice as an illuminator and also into the status and function of illumination at the Central European courts of Munich, Ambras, and Prague. Not simply extending a traditional interest in the medium at these sites, Hoefnagel’s works on parchment transformed illumination into a new form bringing together a range of practices and discourses associated with the courts, with humanism, and with emerging disciplines dedicated to the production of new knowledge. Artistically inventive and conceptually productive, Hoefnagel’s compositions helped shaped an identity for the artist as a hieroglyphicus—an initiate into and maker of a privileged language of representation. Unlike other medieval and early modern art, the illuminated page could bring together, on one surface, different media (text and image), genres (heraldry, portraiture, nature studies, biblical narrative, and ornament, among others), and modes of representation (realism, illusionism, symbolism, and abstraction).

While most people today have never heard anything about this city or its history, this small town was once one of the most important cities in the Low Countries. International and national interests in mitigating and adapting to these changes has led to increased calls to manage human activities through an ecosystem-based approach. Marine spatial planning has emerged as an operational approach to translate this concept into management practice in many marine areas around the world. Marine spatial planning is a public process of analyzing and allocating the spatial and temporal distribution of human activities to specific marine areas to achieve ecological, economic, and social goals and objectives that are specified through a political process.
