CYCLING B.C. TRAINING CAMP IN WHISTLER Whistler Mountain, specifically Canadian Sport Center Pacific hosted the most recent Team BC Training Camp on October 24-26.

12 of the Provinces best junior and u-17 MTB racers were in attendance for a weekend that was literally jam-packed with activity!

The team arrived on Friday afternoon and got right into it with a short spin on Whistler Mountain to check out a few bike park trails and take an up close look at the infamous Whistler Mountain Rat. After the ride and a quick dinner out then the gang was eager to get to bed in anticipation of the big day planned for Saturday.

Saturday was definitely the big day. The day started with an extensive training session at the Canadian Sport Center gym that included instruction on weight training, some dynamic core training using exercise balls and a bit on stretching and injury prevention. Presenting was Diana Rochon of Canadian Sport Center Pacific, Heather King, our own Team BC Physiotherapist from Activelife Physio and Team BC Coach Steve Lund. Following the gym sessions, riders grabbed a quick lunch then headed out for the afternoon cross training session....2.5 hours hiking the Rainbow Lake trail, a grueling uphill hike (with a fair bit of run thrown in for good measure) that took riders all the way up to the snow...and back down again.

Riders were treated to an informative Nutrition seminar on Saturday evening by Tracy Higgs from On the Move Holistic Health and Nutrition as well as chatting about training and Team BC plans for 2009-2010.... it was a very full day!

Sunday the riders were back in the gym for a session on proper squat and dead lift technique from expert Olympic Weightlifting coach Jason Fridrik. The gym sessions were extremely beneficial, as the riders were not only shown how to do some great exercises for increasing their specific MTB strength, but also how to do them properly and safely. (Including the proper way to spot, which of course was done in fine team fashion, see photo)

This very informative session was followed by another spectacular ride on the trails of Whistler where riders got to spin the legs after a morning of weights and challenge their skills on some of the CONTACT DETAILS great MTB trails. Cycling B.C. had a very strong and consistent Junior Cross team to compete in both the Canadian Cross Nationals and the Jim Horner Cross Championships. After two very exciting races B.C. proved that they were on top again. Evan Guthrie came away the Canadian Junior Cross Champion. Here is what Evan and Kevin have to say about the race.

“At 2:00 the gun went off and the 2008 Cyclo-Cross National Championships were underway. From the gun one of the Quebec rider’s set a blistering pace. BC’s Nick Holatko was right up front with the leaders. Holatko was riding great until an Alberta rider took him out and they hit the ground hard. After this kind of crash it is hard to try and chase the leaders down by yourself into headwinds. Kevin Thorpe (BC), Sebastian Sleep (BC), Kris Dahl (AB), Stewart Wight (NB) and myself got a comfortable gap on the rest of the field by the halfway point in the first lap. Sleep had a crash, which put him back about 10 sec. He chased hard, but it was into a headwind. Thorpe and myself were taking hard long pulls in the next few laps to try and shake Wight and Dahl. With 3 laps to go Wight wasn’t able to hold onto the pace. It was now down to my teammate Thorpe, my- self and Alberta’s Kris Dahl, who was riding strong. Dahl was trying to conserve energy as Thorpe and I did most of the work. We weren’t able to drop Dahl. So this meant last minute decisions to try and break away. I was able to attack on the one of the run ups, which was the right choice. I was able to maintain a small lead over Dahl and Thorpe to ride in for the National Title. Dahl just edged out BC rider Kevin Thorpe. Sebastian Sleep rode in for a secured 5th place finish.”

-Evan Guthrie

B.C. Juniors Leading the Pack “It was a fast start until after a lap, there was already a 5 man group secured with over a minute lead on the pack. It consisted of Evan Guthrie, Sebastian Sleep, Kris Dahl (AB), Stuart Wight (NB) and myself. Unfortunately Sebastian crashed leaving 4 left in the group, and a lap later Stuart was dropped leaving 2 BC guys against one Alberta rider. Evan secured the National Title, with Kris Dahl taking the silver and me not being able to catch Kris, taking the Bronze. Sebastian came in for 5th and Nick Holatko racing a strong race.”
