ISSUE71 SEVENTY ONE JULY 5th 2021 ISSUE 71 - 5 JULY 2021

With doing so well in the Euros, it was great to see so many and taprooms busy, with everyone having a blast of a time. This fantastic boost to the Hospitality Industry is just what the doctor ordered. In fact it’s a much needed tonic for all of us, and great to enjoy watching live sport again while draining a or two with friends.

It looks like travel abroad will be open once again to those of us lucky enough to have had two covid jabs and a government announcement is expected soon together with perhaps as many as 20 countries being put on the ‘Green List’. This should enable us to start promoting our Grand Beer Tours once again. Don’t forget to keep checking the promotional pages in our Newsletters for details, and hopefully we’ll see you on one of our awesome trips.

BREWERS CORNER

Interesting news this week that the US Brewers Association have coordinated a much larger than usual US-presence at the and London Craft Beer Festivals this year.

https://www.brewersjournal.info/brewers-associa- tion-brings-27-american-craft--to-uk-beer-festi- vals-this-summer/

Both Festivals had spectacular Brewery-lists already, and will be further enhanced by the influx of US names. Tickets for both are still available.

Two of our favourite UK bloggers, Boak and Bailey and Pub Cur- mudgeon combined in one link here!

https://pubcurmudgeon.blogspot.com/2021/07/back-to-imasas.html

B&B started out by running a survey trying to figure out if people ac- tually like living close to a pub or not. Curmudgeon took this a stage further and has some interesting commentary on the situation.

Our favourite US-blogger, Jeff Alworth has an interesting article on calibration , which can be relied upon to stay constant over a period of years.

https://www.beervanablog.com/beervana/2021/6/28/calibra- tion-beers

Jeff makes the point that our tastes change significantly over- time, and that it is interesting to revisit a reliable old friend, to remind ourselves how far we have come.

New School have a nice article about the Cold IPA, which is a la- ger/IPA hybrid which we mentioned in this column a few months ago, but we have yet to see it cropping up on this side of the Atlantic. https://newschoolbeer.com/home/2021/6/5-cold-ipas-for-the- heat-wave

The White Horse & Little Earth Project, Mill Green, Edwardstone, Sudbury CO10 5PX

Located in remote South Suffolk countryside, the White Horse is an oasis of great beer, and made better by the Little Earth Project Brewery next door. Both are run by beer enthusiasts Tom and Dani.

Little Earth Project produce small batch mixed fermentation, barrel aged sour beers. They grow their own organic hops near the brewery and often forage for additional ingredients in local hedgerows. Their relaxed way of country living is reflected in the process of creating beer which typically takes 1-2 years before release.

Although currently closed for indoor drinking, the pub itself is very spacious with additional covered outdoor areas and a large garden. The grounds also include an open campsite as well as 2 holi- day chalets for rent.

LEP are very hot on sustainability and Suffolk County Council has recognised them as purvey- ors of Green Tourism. Not only are there solar panels on the roof, they source water from their own borehole and have 3 burners for warmth in the winter, using local coppiced wood. A small 9m wind turbine supplies additional green electricity to the premises. The has 6 taps offering Little Earth Project beers, 8 lines and several cask taps that rotate regularly with breweries local and countrywide.

When Rob and Steve from TWICB stayed recently, there were cask and keg beers from Burnt Mill, Burning Sky, The Kernel, Deya, and Utopian Brewing. These are a welcome addition to the delicious mixed fermentation beers from LEP. They also have an extensive list of bottle beers (all mixed fermentation and wild ) from around the world including Trillium.

Currently no food is available in the pub (June 2021) although we understand it will be coming soon. In the meantime, on Friday evenings and at weekends a food truck selling tasty burgers is an option if you’re peckish.

Located just 6 miles from Sudbury, a 40 minute drive from Stansted Airport as well as be- ing located along the South Suffolk Cycle Route - the Edwardstone White Horse has plenty to offer and we at TWICB throughly enjoyed our drinking at the pub, before retiring, a bit worse for wear, to our tents.

PATREON ANNOUNCEMENT Discover the benefits of membership

When we launched This Week in Craft Beer in January 2020, we were blissfully unaware of what lay ahead of us! Considering the obstacles, we have all faced, we are proud of what we managed to accomplish in our first year.

However, we have lots more that we want to do in 2021! In order to fund these activities and to enable our Community to get more involved with the creative process at TWICB, we have launched a Patreon Membership Programme.

Full details of how you can get involved starting at less than the cost of a half-decent can of beer per month, can be found at patreon.com/thisweekincraftbeer.

Don't worry, our weekly Newsletter and Podcast will continue to be FREE FOR EVERYONE! The Patreon Membership offers access to range of brand new TWICB Products and Services. Please check it out and let us know what you think?! www.thisweekincraft.beer/patreon

Q. Why are you starting to charge for things that we have enjoyed for free all this year? A. We aren't! The weekly Newsletter and weekly Brewer-interview Podcast will continue to be free to everyone. Patreon will enable us to offer brand-new additional products and services to Members.

Q. What's this about Members getting involved with TWICB? A. We have been amazed and delighted with the amount of engagement and feedback we have received during our first year, via social media, email etc. The UK Craft Beer Community is clearly engaged, knowledgeable and sociable! We want to provide a mechanism for bringing the community into our creative process, allowing people to participate in the planning, research, production and delivery of our products.

Q. Why do you have to charge for things? A. TWICB is run by just two people: Rob and Steve. Whilst it is undoubtedly a labour of love, it has developed into something that consumes a significant part of our working weeks. Steve works mainly on the Newsletter, where the New Beers Section alone takes many hours per week, to research, collate and format. Rob works mainly on the podcast, where each episode takes several hours to schedule, research, record, edit and promote. Whilst we will continue to invest this time to produce the free products, we think Patreon could be a great way of funding the time and effort that we want to devote to developing new products and services.

Q. Apart from your time, what specifically will the Patreon proceeds be used to fund? A. As soon as the COVID-19 situation permits, we want to take the podcast on the road, to record Brewer interviews at their own Taprooms, as well as record live segments at Festivals, Tap-Takeovers and other beery events of note. In order to provide a quality finished audio product, we will need to invest in some decent mobile recording equipment, not to mention the cost of travelling the length and breadth of Britain in the pursuit of great interviews!

Q. What is the thought process behind the bundles of Patreon Membership bonuses that you are offering? A. We have tried to come up with bundles that combine some community benefits, exclusive digital products, exclusive physical products, invites to exclusive TWICB events, discounts on TWICB Grand Tours and opportunities to participate in the TWICB creative process. We have tried to price each Membership Level so that each offers outstanding value for money. We have also tried to be mindful of the number of Patreon members that we can realistically include in each bonus activity. (Clearly the invite to participate in the podcast interview or attend the TWICB "Board Meeting" needs to be strictly limited in numbers, or else the bonus would cease to be "exclusive” and would risk disrupting the actual process itself.)

Q. Are the Membership Benefits and Levels set in stone? A. Of course not! We are literally making this up as we go along currently! We would love to get your feedback on the Levels, the Benefits, and indeed the very idea of using Patreon in the first place! Please hit us up on IG (@thisweekincraft.beer) or via email [email protected]. We confidently expect to need to adjust the Patreon model as we go along, based on feedback.

Q. Is this like a Gym membership, where I sign up in January, and then regret it for the rest of the year?! A. Definitely Not! Membership is month-to-month and you can cancel your membership at any time. Only caveat here is that certain Member Benefits (mainly those ones that involve a significant cost for us to provide to you) are only unlocked after three or six months at a certain tier.
