In this wide-ranging study, chapters by leading scholars view Petrarch’s life through his works, from the epic Africa to the “Letter to Posterity,” from the Canzoniere to the vernacular epic Triumphi. Petrarch is revealed as the heir to the converging influences of classical cultural and medieval Christianity, but also to his great vernacular precursor, Dante, and his friend, collaborator, and sly critic, Boccaccio. Particular attention is given to Petrach’s profound influence on the Humanist movement and on the courtly cult of vernacular love poetry, while raising important questions as to the validity of the distinction between medieval and modern, and what is lost in attempting to classify this elusive figure. albert russell ascoli is Gladyce Arata Terrill Distinguished Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Petrarch began his Bucolicum Carmen by composing an allegorical eclogue about the death of his patron Robert of Anjou, the King of Naples; and in imitation of this poem, his admiring friend Boccaccio later wrote a series of Neapolitan eclogues depicting the events that followed Robert’s death. As Petrarch and Boccaccio each had different relationships with Naples, it will be shown that the city represents their respective ideals of poetic otium. On Easter Sunday, 8 April 1341, Francesco Petrarca became the first poet since antiquity to receive the honor of the laurel crown.1 The coronation ceremony was held on the Capitoline Hill in Rome but, had Petrarch chosen differently, it might have taken place at the Castel Nuovo in Naples.2 It was there that he had spent three days in an oral examination conducted by King Robert of An- jou, “Il Saggio” himself, before being formally recommended for laureation. -

Long taken to be a closed circuit within, or a derivative offshoot of, the genre’s history, the eclogues of Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio at once accentuated the metageneric elements of classical pastoral and influenced the future of pastoral representations through their consistent exploration of pastoral’s boundary- crossing double move—an expansionary movement outward into the representational terrain of other genres and a recuperative (and incorporative) return to the fold. -

Petrarch’s scribe, who attaches the date “August 28,” seems to have dictated it in 1364, but Boccaccio didn’t receive it until 1366. It was one of three letters (Seniles 5.1–3) stolen and kept as souvenirs of their famed author by the messenger charged with their deliv- ery. In the Labyrinth of the Library: Petrarch's Cicero, Dante's Virgil
In the Labyrinth of the Library: Petrarch’s Cicero, Dante’s Virgil, and the Historiography of the Renaissance by M ARTIN E ISNER Petrarch’s 1345 discovery of Cicero’s personal letters in Verona has long been regarded as a foundational moment in the historiography of the Renaissance. In the traditional view, Petrarch’s discovery engenders a new historical self-consciousness that has frequently been described, since the middle of the twentieth century, in terms of a contrast between a medieval Dante and a Renaissance Petrarch. In keeping with recent work rethinking periodization, this essay revisits Petrarch’s letters on his discovery to reconsider the distance between Dante and Petrarch and to reveal how Petrarch constructs his new relationship with Cicero through Dante’s characterization of Virgil. While some critics have noted this Dantean presence, they have not examined its meaning. This study argues that Petrarch’s borrowing from Dante is significant because it shows how Dante’s complex relationship to the past embodied in the figure of Virgil shaped Petrarch’s construction of his Cicero and informed Renaissance ideas of history. 1. I NTRODUCTION etrarch’s 1345 discovery of Cicero’s personal letters in Verona has P long been regarded as a foundational moment in the historiography of the Renaissance, whether one takes the term as referring only to a movement associated with humanism or to the period that also goes by the name early modern.1 From Leonardo Bruni (1370–1444) to modern histories of scholarship and Western civilization textbooks, Petrarch’s discovery represents a primal scene that has been linked to other putative Renaissance discoveries of the individual, ideas of authorship, the stylistic principle of imitatio, and, most importantly for 1For the distinction between the Renaissance as movement or as period, see Gombrich. -

No Latin author of the Renaissance was so explicit about his desire to rival the ancients; no writer after him attempted by quite so heroic a coup de main to create works that could stand next to those of Virgil, Livy and Cicero. From his crowning as poet laureate, in imitation of Statius, to the careful shaping of his own legend in his letters, Petrarch declared his obsession with joining the company of the famous dead. However convinced of the cultural depravity of his age, he was equally convinced, at least in his youth, that it was still possible to write immortal poetry and great philosophy in Latin. ‘Rari sunt, fateor, pauci sunt, sed aliqui sunt; quid autem vetat ex paucis fieri?’1 But the remarkable fact about Petrarch’s subsequent literary fame is that it was the opposite of the fame that he desired to have. -

Heliotropia 14 (2017) http://www.heliotropia.org Boccaccio’s Biographical Tributes to Petrarch* he preparation of the new critical edition of Petrarch’s epistle Ad pos- teritatem, broadly known to be an unfinished autobiographical letter addressed to posterity, has led me to reconsider the numerous and T 1 wide-ranging (and not only philological) problems that it presents. Within the framework of this analysis I have investigated Boccaccio’s biography of Petrarch, the De vita et moribus domini Francisci Petracchi de Florentia,2 with the aim of evaluating the validity of a theory that sees Ad posteritatem and De vita as closely connected.3 I subsequently extended my study by un- dertaking a comparative analysis in order to chart the similarities and dif- ferences of content and structure in these two texts relative to the other two biographical sketches dedicated to Petrarch by Boccaccio: the writings that appear in the entry for “Sorgia” in the De montibus, silvis, fontibus, lacubus, * For the Italian version of this article see Refe 2014b. 1 See Refe 2014 for insightful comments on all of the issues concerning the letter as well, including the choice of expressing the recipient with ad and the accusative, Ad posteri- tatem, instead of the dative, posteritati, a heading that was derived from the opening greeting formula and by which the epistle is best known. 2 The De vita was first published and translated by Rossetti 1828, 316–24 and 327–36 (di- gitized and readable on the Web with Google eBook; anastatic reprint Nabu Press, 16 April 2012).
