Andrew W. Mellon Collection 1937.1.11 ENTRY The painting’s iconography is based on the type of the Hodegetria Virgin. [1] It presents, however, a modernized version of this formula, in keeping with the “humanized” faith and sensibility of the time; instead of presenting her son to the observer as in the Byzantine model, Mary’s right hand touches his breast, thus indicating him as the predestined sacrificial lamb. As if to confirm this destiny, the child draws his mother’s hand towards him with his left hand. The gesture of his other hand, outstretched and grasping the Madonna’s veil, can be interpreted as a further reference to his Passion and death. [2] The painting probably was originally the left wing of a diptych. The half-length Madonna and Child frequently was combined with a representation of the Crucifixion, with or without the kneeling donor. In our panel, the donor, an unidentified prelate, is seen kneeling to the left of the Madonna; his position on the far left of the composition itself suggests that the panel was intended as a pendant to a matching panel to the right. -

Ovid’s Wand: the brush of history and the mirror of ekphrasis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Reid Hardaway, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Ethan Knapp, Advisor Karen Winstead Sarah-Grace Heller Copyright by Reid Hardaway 2017 Abstract The recent work on the manuscript reception of Ovid’s canon and Ovidian commentaries in western Europe has affirmed the author’s significant literary influence in the late Mid- dle Ages. The production and reception of Ovidinia flourished, and Ovid’s poems in- creasingly became read as coherent compositions rather than dissected for bits of moral exempla. In particular, the Metamorphoses profoundly affects the literary landscape of late medieval France and England. Allusions to Ovid’s poem reemerge throughout the late Middle Ages at defining moments of poetic self-consciousness, most often through figures of ekphrasis, the use of poetry in order to portray other media of art. By examin- ing such moments from a selection of influential medieval poems, the mind of the late medieval poet reveals itself in perpetual contestation with the images and figures of an Ovidian lineage, but the contest entails the paradoxical construction of poetic identity, which forces the poet to impose the haunting shadow of literary history onto the mirror of his or her craft. ii Acknowledgements The following work would not have been possible without the considerate and insightful assistance of my advisor, Ethan Knapp, as well as the other members of the dissertation committee, Karen Winstead and Sarah-Grace Heller. -

THE YEAR IN REVIEWTHE WALTERS ART MUSEUM ANNUAL REPORT 2003 France, France, Ms.M.638, folio 23 verso, 1244–1254, The Pierpont Morgan Library, New York Dear Friends: After more than three intense years renovating and reinstalling our Centre Street Building, which con- cluded in June 2002 with the opening of our transformed 19th-century galleries, we stepped back in fiscal year 2002–2003 to refocus attention on our Charles Street Building, with its Renaissance, baroque, and rococo collections, in preparation for its complete reinstallation for a fall 2005 opening. For the Walters, as for cultural institutions nationwide, this was more generally a time of reflection and retrenchment in the wake of lingering uncertainty after the terrorist attack of 9/11, the general economic downturn, and significant loss of public funds. Nevertheless, thanks to Mellon Foundation funding, we were able to make three new mid-level curatorial hires, in the departments of ancient, medieval, and Renaissance and baroque art. Those three endowed positions will have lasting impact on the museum, as will a major addition to our galleries: in September 2002, we opened a comprehensive display of the arts of the ancient Americas, thanks to a long-term loan from the Austen-Stokes Foundation. Now, for the first time, we are able to expand on a collecting area Henry Walters entered nearly a century ago, to match our renowned ancient and medieval holdings in quality and range with more than four millennia of works from the western hemisphere. The 2002–2003 season was marked by three major exhibitions organized by the Walters, and by the continued international tour of a fourth Walters show, Desire and Devotion. -

A Rhetorical Debate on Latin and Vernacular Languages∗ he story of Griselda has always raised many interpretative problems. One could perhaps suggest that when Boccaccio has his storytellers T quarrel over the meaning of the last novella, he is anticipating the critical controversy that this text has sparked throughout its long and suc- cessful career in Europe. The first critic and reader of Boccaccio’s tale was Petrarch, whom Boc- caccio met for the first time in Florence in 1350. The following year, Boccac- cio met the elder poet in Padua to invite him, unsuccessfully, to assume a position as a professor at Florence’s Studium. The cultural and personal bond between Boccaccio and Petrarch dates back to that time.1 This friend- ship, marked by intense correspondence and mutual invitations, was always affected by an inherent tension over Dante’s poetics. For Petrarch, the Com- media was irreconcilable with his well-known aristocratic and elitist con- ception of literature; Boccaccio, however, soon became Dante’s ‘advocate,’ promoting the poetics of the Commedia.2 The Dante debate between Boccaccio and Petrarch expresses a differ- ence of opinion concerning vernacular literature, its dignity and its appro- priateness for dealing with issues traditionally entrusted to Latin. Famili- ares 21.15, addressed to Boccaccio, is an important token of Petrarch’s atti- tude towards Dante. Rejecting any charge of envy, Petrarch presents the is- sue of language as the real reason he dismisses Dante’s poetry: ∗ I would like to thank Prof. -

Petrarch and Portraiture (8 Jun 18) University of Cambridge, Old Library, Pembroke College, Cambridge, Jun 08, 2018 Ilaria Bernocchi, University of Cambridge Petrarch and Portraiture, XIV-XVI Century The symposium investigates the interplay between Petrarch's writings and later Petrarchan litera- ture with portraiture. Through his works in both Latin and in vernacular Petrarch made crucial contributions to the establishment of new models for representation and self-representation, both in literature and in the visual arts. Portraiture – the visual celebration of the individual – offers a particularly appropri- ate vantage point from which to investigate this influence. Throughout Petrarch's extensive cor- pus, the reader engages with diverse types of portraits. In De viris illustribus, for instance, Petrarch presents literary depictions of many of the most important scriptural and classical perso- nalities. The text inspired the tradition of portraits of famous men and women depicted as exam- ples of conduct in private homes and studioli, a tradition that culminated in Paolo Giovio's Musaeo of portraits on Lake Como. In the Letters and the Canzoniere, Petrarch fashions a literary portrait of his poetic alter-ego. His engagement with portraiture culminates in Rvf 77 and 78, which are dedicated to a portrait of Laura painted by Simone Martini. By weaving together the notions of literary and visual portraiture, the poet touches on issues such as the dialogue with the effigy of the beloved, the perceived conflict between the soul and the veil of appearances, and the dynamic relationship between word and image. These aspects of Petrarch's work influenced sub- sequent reflections on the limits of art and literature in representing the complex nature of the indi- vidual. -

We do not have Francesco’s letter, which presumably touched also upon a tidy bequest of florins to purchase for his old friend a warm garment for nocturnal study and research: in- somnia was a shared affliction.1 Boccaccio’s delayed reply of 3 November, offering his condolences to Francescuolo, far from being a spontaneous outpouring of grief, is a carefully composed piece of consolatory rhetoric, a genre famously essayed in a long letter of 1361 to the exiled Pino de’ Rossi.2 First Boccaccio treats Petrarch’s elevation to a better life, rhetorically balancing the deceased’s tranquil joy in heaven with the letter-writer’s own continued travails in this earthly life, beset as he is by (graphically de- scribed) illness. -

ERTL PÉTER Klasszikus, bibliai és középkori reminiszcenciák Petrarca Sine nomine-leveleiben The aim of this study is to identify and analyze some classical, biblical and medieval literary reminiscences in Petrarch’s collection of satirical letters against the Papal court of Avignon, called Liber sine nomine. The examples examined illustrate how the poet combined the classical tradition with the Christian one and, thanks to the passages evoked, provided his own text with a further, political-polemical meaning. Moreover, the identification of an allusion to Virgil’s Aeneid allows a slight correction to be made to the critical text of the ninth epistle.1 „[…] amikor figyelmes olvasás közben hasznos mondásokra találsz […], tégy oda jelzést. Giotto’s Fleeing Apostle PAUL BAROLSKY —In memory of Andrew Ladis Ihave previously suggested in these pages that in the Humanities, to which this journal is dedicated, the doctrine of ut pictura poesis dominates our thinking to such an extent that we often make false or over-simplified equa- tions between texts and images, even though there is never an exact identity between words, which tell, and mute im- ages, which show. The falsifying equation between text and image is a corrupting factor in what is called “iconography,” the discipline that seeks, however imperfectly, to give verbal meaning to wordless images. Texts may suggest connota- tions or implications of images, but images never render the exact denotations of these texts. I would like to suggest here a single example of such a delicate if not fragile link between text and image—a case in which the artist begins with a text but transforms it into something other than what the words of the text describe. My example is found in the art of one of the great masters in the history of European art. I speak of Giotto. Of all the personages that Giotto painted in the Scrovegni Chapel, one of the most mysterious is the forbidding, hooded figure with his back to us, who clutches a drapery in his clenched fist in the left foreground of the Arrest of Jesus (fig. 1). This ominous figure leads us down a fascinating path. In his magisterial book Giotto’s O, Andrew Ladis ob- serves that the “anonymous henchman” has in his “rigid grasp” the robe of an “inconstant and indeterminate apostle who flees . -
