Coal India Limited 2 PROCUREMENT PRIORITIES

Key drivers across all mines In the context of maintaining CIL’s overarching objectives of maximising production while maintaining its position as a low cost producer, key operational drivers focus on safety; improvement of underground operations; coal quality and environmental compliance.

Operational Imperatives

Open Pit Mines

Productivity To improve productivity by better utilisation of existing assets through incorporation of Mine Management Systems ( MMS ), Computerised Maintenance Management Software/ Comprehensive Maintenance Management System ( CMMS ), attachments to enhance machine production, tools and fixtures to enable faster maintenance

Safety Slope stability alarm systems, proximity detection systems

Quality On belt coal quality scanners, washery components, in motion weighing systems

Environmental compliance Dewatering pumps, slurry beneficiation, dry coal washing, rehabilitation

Land acquisition & Population pressures make land acquisition difficult, and, where achieved, the rehabilitation existing population have to be resettled in a built township

Underground Mines

Productivity Underground diesel vehicles for personnel and maintenance equipment transportation, continuous miner operation contracts, longwall miner operation contracts (few opportunities as there are geological challenges in many areas).

Safety Gas chromatograph methane detection systems, tube bundle methane detection systems, underground mine communication systems, only in - there is an extensive underground fire below a populated area burning for some decades- technology to douse the fire and extract the remaining underground coking coal seams.

Quality Washery components

Environmental compliance Water seepage issues, stoping procedures, rehabilitation

In an effort to increase production and productivity CIL has recently taken a decision to ramp up mechanisation of its underground mines through the adoption of continuous mining process, and the installation of longwall in select sites and man riding systems. This is creating opportunities for global suppliers of technology and equipment solutions.

Coal production from CIL’s underground mines has fallen to 36-million tonnes a year from levels of around 70-million tonnes a year over the past 40 years. As reserves for open cast mining deplete, future coal production demands of one-billion tonnes a year can only be met through bulk production underground technologies. At present most of the underground mines operate at depths of 350 m and the adoption of newer technology would enable mining to extend to 600 m.

Recent mine upgrades / automation Across the Group of Mines - Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), Mining Maintenance Services (MMS), washeries – extended capacity, contract mining, underground diesel vehicles, safety training, scanning and weighing systems.
