American Studies Mr. Carlson The Dispute over the Annexation of Texas and opposition to the Mexican War Prior to Texas's independence, the Nueces River was recognized as the northern boundary of Mexico. Spain had fixed the Nueces as a border in 1816, and the United States ratified it in the 1819 treaty by which the United States had purchased Florida and renounced claims to Texas. Even following Mexico's independence from Spain, American and European cartographers fixed the Texas border at the Nueces. When Texas declared its independence, however, it claimed as its territory an additional 150 miles of land, to the Rio Grande. With the annexation of Texas in 1845, the United States adopted Texas's position and claimed the Rio Grande as the border. Mexico broke diplomatic relations with the United States and refused to recognize either the Texas annexation or the Rio Grande border. President James Polk sent a special envoy, John L. Slidell, to propose cancellation of Mexico's debt to United States citizens who had incurred damages during the Mexican Revolution, provided Mexico would formally recognize the Rio Grande boundary. Slidell was also authorized to offer the Mexican government up to $30 million for California and New Mexico. Between Slidell's arrival on December 6, 1845, and his departure in March 1846, the regime of President Jose Herrara was overthrown and a fervently nationalistic government under General Mariano Paredes seized power. Neither leader would speak to Slidell. When Paredes publicly reaffirmed Mexico's claim to all of Texas, Slidell left in a temper, convinced that Mexico should be "chastised." American Studies Mr. -

War and Legitimacy: the Securement of Sovereignty in the Northwest Indian War
i ABSTRACT WAR AND LEGITIMACY: THE SECUREMENT OF SOVEREIGNTY IN THE NORTHWEST INDIAN WAR During the post-revolution period, the newfound constitutional government of the United States faced a crisis of sovereignty and legitimacy. The Old Northwest region, encompassing what is now Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, was disputed between several groups. The U.S. government under George Washington claimed the region and sought to populate the land with white settlers, British officials in North America wished to reestablish British hegemony in the Ohio River valley and Native-Americans wished to protect their ancestral homeland from foreign invasion. In the 1790s, war broke out between a British backed alliance of Native tribes and the United States of America. Historians have named this conflict the Northwest Indian War. Examining government records, personal correspondences between Washington administration officials and military commanders, as well as recollections of soldiers, officials and civilians this thesis explores the geopolitical causes and ramifications of the Northwest Indian War. These sources demonstrate how the war was a reflection of a crisis which threatened the legitimacy to American sovereignty in the West. Furthermore, they also demonstrate how the use of a professional federal standing army was used by Washington’s government to secure American legitimacy. Complaints, indeed, forever fol- low misfortune, as that is but too often the companion of misconduct. Humphrey Marshall, The History of Kentucky, 1812. General Josiah Harmar’s campaign against the “Indian ban- ditti” along the Maumee River in 1790 marks a watershed in the settlement of the Old Northwest and also in the evolution of Amer- ica’s military institutions. His expedition, the Constitutional re- public’s first attempt to impose its will by offensive arms, initiated four years of warfare on the part of the federal government to halt Indian depredations on the Ohio frontier. It was one in a series of events that led to the Treaty of Greenville in 1795, to the abandon- ment by Great Britain of the forts still held on American soil, to expansion of the peacetime military establishment, and to the per- manent widening of the federal role in maintaining the nation’s security. Harmar’s campaign remains, paradoxically, both well known to scholars and in many ways not well understood. This state of affairs does not result from a dearth of information. Harmar’s con- temporaries could learn easily the outline of the campaign’s events and could infer from scattered but numerous clues the causes be- hind its failure. Since 1790 many more facts have come to light; yet, in spite of historians’ familiarity with the expedition, signifi- cant aspects of it are still unclear. The campaign’s climactic battle, for example, has never been accurately described and to this day remains nameless. -

THIs stupendous work is the definitive collection of Lincoln papers. It is superbly edited and handsomely published. It has been widely reviewed, and has already become a commercial success, fully vindicating the daring of the press which published it and the patience of the editors who created it. A review of any collected works of this kind is likely to develop into a catalog of treasures. The treasures are here. Each volume necessarily contains much minutia of no great significance, but the deep-seated Lincoln enthusiast will want to know about everlthing, and the casual browser will find a good deal to interest him which is not in the shorter collections. Though the Works omit most of the exclusively legal writings by Lincoln, as for example his pleadings, what is here can be seen by a law:yer with the eye of a fellow craftsman, which makes it look a little different than it does to others. If Lincoln is read with a professional eye, any lawyer can learn from his reading. I Abraham Lincoln was President of the United States from 1861 to 1865. He romanced with Ann Rutledge (if he did at all) for only a few months. He pulled a puppy out of a river, rescued a pig, went down the Mississippi on a flatboat, and ran a store, unsuccessfully, for a year. The History of Tippecanoe County Compiled by Quinten Robinson, Tippecanoe County Historian THE SETTING Tippecanoe County, located in west-central Indiana, is about 65 miles northwest of Indianapolis and 100 miles southeast of Chicago. Tippecanoe County is 21 miles east to west and 24 miles north to south and Lafayette, the county seat, is situated on the banks of the Wabash nearly in the center. About one-half the surface consists of broad, fertile, and nearly level plains. The balance consists of gently rolling uplands, steep hillsides or rich alluvial bottoms. Occasional wetlands or bogs are found but those were largely drained by the beginning of the 20th century. The Wabash River flows nearly through the middle of Tippecanoe County from northeast to southwest. Tributaries to the Wabash River that drain the north and west parts of Tippecanoe County are the Tippecanoe River, Burnett Creek, Indian Creek, and Little Pine Creek. Draining the south and east parts of the county are Sugar Creek, Buck Creek, North, South and Middle Forks of the Wildcat Creek, Wea Creek, and Flint Creek. Besides Lafayette, cities and towns in Tippecanoe County are West Lafayette, the home of Purdue University, Battle Ground, West Point, Otterbein, Dayton, Clarks Hill, Romney, Stockwell, Americus, Colburn & Buck Creek. In 2010 county population was set at 172,780 PREHISTORIC TIPPECANOE COUNTY The terrain, the Wabash River, and the creeks you see today in Tippecanoe County came to their present condition about 10,000 years ago as the last continental glacier retreated northward leaving a vastly different landscape than what had existed before the advance of the ice sheets began over 700,000 years ago. -

Chapter Eight “A Strong but Judicious Enemy to Slavery”: Congressman Lincoln (1847-1849) Lincoln’s entire public service on the national level before his election as president was a single term in the U. S. House. Though he had little chance to distinguish himself there, his experience proved a useful education in dealing with Congress and patronage. WASHINGTON, D.C. Nicholas Trist, chief,clerk of the U.S. Statement Department at the time, negotiated the peace treaty in defiance of 1845-1849 President James K. Polk. Trist believed that Mexico must surrender fully, including surrendering territory. Polk forwarded the Treaty to the Senate, which reluctantly ratified it. This lesson on the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo examines the power granted to the President and the Senate to make and approve treaties with foreign nations. The lesson correlates with the National History Standards and with the National Standards for Civics and Government. It furnishes three primary sources:(1) the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo; (2) Lincoln's Spot Resolutions; and (3) a photograph of a border marker being rebuilt in the 1890s.
