EDUCATION Spring 2019 GUIDE Field Trips • Workshops • Professional Development EDUCATION GUIDE OVERVIEW This edition of the Education Guide includes information about the Betty Brinn Museum’s growing Maker Initiatives, including programs and services that we offer at Brinn Labs, our new makerspace in Bay View. Brinn Labs is expanding the Museum’s hands-on learning mission to the entire community, and the Maker Initiatives have made us a national leader in maker education. Museum exhibits and programs reflect national and Wisconsin state academic standards, Common Core Standards, developmental milestones recognized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, Next Generation Science Standards, and Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards. Science CITY: Curiosity Required is part warehouse, part superstore, part clubhouse and part laboratory. Filled with activity stations and interactive media, the exhibit presents learning opportunities that highlight the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education. Complementary field trips to Science CITY: Blast Off!, Fluid Formations and Playground Engineers Word Headquarters Discover our “communications company” where employees are hard at play cranking out the building blocks of literacy – print recognition, narrative, language skills, vocabulary and more. Play larger-than-life word games, listen to audio books and put on a show. Sponsored by: Northwestern Mutual Foundation Home Town Our pretend business district features a grocery store, motorcycle dealership, bank, post office, auto service center, bus, factory, construction site, and TV studio. Explore the people, places and processes that make a community work with pretend cash registers, working phones, costumes, and props for role-play. Explore the exhibit’s collaborative computer design center, magnification and analysis station, the circuits challenge and other activities that introduce children to real-life technology and products, and promote STEM skills. Pocket Park Step into our pretend urban park setting with activities that foster a young child’s early literacy and school readiness skills. Climb into the tree house, dig and plant in the garden bed, take a pretend baby for a wellness visit, try on footwear at the shoe store, and visit the kindergarten classroom. Be A Maker: Blast Off! (K4 - 4th grade): $13 Children will design, build and launch prototype rockets. Stressing design thinking and problem- solving, Blast Off! is a fun and creative STEAM program. (K4 - 1st grade) Everyday experiences – like cooking and shopping – are full of opportunities to learn math, and program activities feature hands-on challenges and games that support developing math skills.
