Spring 2010 Vol 1 Issue 2 thenerve The Neuroanatomy of Homosexuality The Religious Brain Neuroscience and the Military The Rise of the Cyborgs Mind and Brain Society The Mind and Brain Society (MBS; formerly known as the BU Organization for the Mind and Brain Sciences) was founded in the fall of 2008 in concert with BU’s new Undergraduate Program in Neuroscience. The group aims to create a network for un- dergraduate students who wish to take an active role in current issues and research. MBS serves as a hub for not only Neuroscience majors, but all students interested in Psychology, Biology, Philosophy, Computer Science, etc. Our goal is to support an ea- ger multidisciplinary undergraduate community with the conversations and resources fundamental to Neuroscience today. Throughout the academic year, MBS hosts events spotlighting many different fac- ets of Neuroscience. We hold discussion sessions during which we informally discuss a topic of interest over coffee; previous topics include “The Neuroscience of Religion” and “NeuroEthics.” The group also hosts research presentations by BU professors and screenings of thought-provoking films containing neuroscience motifs. Nevertheless, bisexual women encounter unique stigma and challenges that warrant specific at- tention. Seventeen young adult women participated in individual, open-ended qualitative interviews about their bisexual identity de- velopment. -

This little square opens up like an oyster at a point where the decumani, the Greek main streets, become a tangle of narrow medieval lanes and heavy gray-and-white buildings. Like an oyster, this square has a pearl: An ancient statue of the Nile, popularly known as Corpo di Napoli, the body of Naples. The story of this statue is peculiar. Dating back to the second or third centuries, when it was erected to mark the presence of an Egyptian colony in the city, the statue disappeared for a long time and was rediscovered in the twelfth century. Its head was missing, and the presence of children lying at its breasts led people to believe that it represented Parthenope, the virgin nymph to whom the foundation of the city is mythically attributed. In 1657 the statue was restored, and a more suitable male head made it clear that the reclining figure symbolized the Egyptian river and the children personifications of its tributaries. -

Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril. Those who read the symbol do so at their peril. (Oscar Wilde, Preface to The Picture of Dorian Gray )1 On the surface, Gerard Manley Hopkins’s fragmentary poem ‘[Who Shaped These Walls]’ is a partial draft on a scrap of paper, the only extant letter between himself and Walter Pater, Pater’s aforementioned acceptance of an invitation to dinner ( Facsimiles II, p.176). Although merely a fragment of their friendship and of Victorian cordiality, beneath its surface of ink and formality there is a faint expression of peril, peril involving the disclosure of those homoerotic and paederastic sensibilities that these two friends had in common. As a symbol, this letter and its poem serve as the solitary occasion directly connecting Pater, leader of the Aesthetes and Decadents into the 1890s, with the poetry of Hopkins, once his student, forever his friend. If engaged symbolically — as if written with Pater in mind, though not for Pater to read 2 — Hopkins’s poem becomes more insightful than improvisational, a glimpse into the ways Pater maintained his discretion amidst the perils inherent to deviance during the Victorian period: Who shaped these walls has shewn The music of his mind, Made know, though thick through stone, What beauty beat behind. Whilst curricula at liberal institutions occasionally add on LGB-relevant material, a heterosexual norm is still perpetuated in the hidden curriculum (Epstein, 1995) through overt harassment of staff and students, structural impediments to those who identify as LGB, and only tokenistic course coverage which gives a clear message that LGB sexualities are different and strange (Eyre, 1993). This chapter updates Simoni’s (2000) research to display the ways in which such heteronormativity is reproduced within psychology textbooks. As with research and theory in the discipline, the history of psychology teaching has been marked by prejudice and discrimination, failing to represent minorities or to include relevant new scholarship on minority groups (Bronstein & Quina, 1988).
