There are other credible studies that confirm this and no one seriously disputes these figures. Contrary to the general impression of India as an impoverished nation of half-naked fakirs for most of known history, India was one of the wealthiest civilizations on earth. The length of time that India had been a leading economic power, too, is unprecedented in history. It was only in the past couple of hundred years that India economically slipped badly, not being able to deal with the rise of European expansion and not able to fully participate in the industrial revolution. A major reason for the decline was that years of amoral institution building eventually caught up with the Indians in practical terms, where the existing institutions could not adequately deal with the problems at hand and became dysfunctional, weak, and irrelevant. India was one of the greatest mercantile powers in history. The Indians achieved this despite the fact that India was never a unified political entity. As a unified single entity, India today
