Operation Shore Patrol has just marked its 39th beach cleanup who would have thought this association project - that started out with a few members gathering on the beach in 1971 – would still be going strong – “it’s called community commitment for a good cause.”

This year there were a total of 503 volunteers who braved the wind and rain in their specifi c areas; dedicated 2580 hours and managed to rid 8.66 tons of litter off of the Washington coastline – from Moclips to the mouth of the and by the time they had returned home 138, 780 miles had been recorded to accomplish this feat.

Regions 1- 2 - and 3 are their own entity – each adds their own special activity to say “thank you” to the volunteer’s for attending; it ranges from lunch and dinners served, parade through a local OPERATION SHORE PATROL CLEANUP STATS community, door prizes, fun 4x4 runs, to an annual region picnic - wrapping up a fun fi lled YEAR PEOPLE HOURS POUNDS and productive weekend. Region 1 Region 2 Region 3 Ocean City Twin Harbors Cape Disappointment www.pnw4wda.org 4-Wheelin’ News DECEMBER 2010 11 Operation Shore Patrol September 17 – 19, 2010 Ocean City State Park

We had great weather for a brief period of time on Saturday, however at about 4pm it started raining again. We had 142 people attend this year; 48 less than last year. We collected 7,200 lbs of garbage and a total of 25,000 one way miles traveled. This year the beach was not as dirty wasn’t that bad which was nice considering the lack of people who attended. We had a total of 1,136 hours of cleaning time.

This year the I-9 form was mandatory for all three sites; one per campsite. For us that wasn’t a huge issue as we have been doing it the same way for the past three years.

I would like to thank Olympic Trailblazers for cooking lunch on Saturday, the Seattle Jeep Club for running the sign in booth and to the Thunder Trucks for cooking breakfast on Sunday and to the Tamers for continuing their never ending support.

Thank you to all the clubs who donated this year as well as to all the vendors. I have a surprise thank you coming in way of a post card to the vendors that donated. I always appreciate your support for this event even with the economy being what it is today.

12 DECEMBER 2010 www.pnw4wda.org Operation Shore Patrol - 2010 Region 2

In our 12 years as host of the Region 2 portion of Operation Shore Patrol we think this is the smallest turnout we can remember. We can’t thank enough the clubs and families that choose to join us at the beach each year for this great cause. We think of it as the unoffi cial end of summer event.

Region Two at Twin Harbor State Park had 263 club members (half of our normal member count) that traveled 24,390 miles to get to the coast. These fabulous people cruised up and down the beaches collecting 3.62 tons of garbage and using 1200 man hours to do it. Yes, we had trash and dead wildlife and one club even brought in a length of rope they claimed took 8 jeeps to pull out of the sand, but at the end of the day our beaches weren’t too bad.

Friday was a teaser just like last year. A beautiful day making us think Saturday would be great. But the rain set in overnight and with the wind we weren’t sure what would be standing in the morning! Mother Nature, in her infi nite wisdom, gave us most of the day Saturday to enjoy being at the beach. And, we think everyone had a great time. We made it through our fi nal prize give away in the evening without rain, though that was in question. What was funny was watching the Webfooters come trotting up the road, hollering directions at each other, carrying a car cover for their group to stand under should the heavens open up on us! Makes me chuckle just thinking about it!

This year we added a little ‘poker’ run in our agenda for those that wanted to do a little something in addition to the parade. The route took jeepers in and around Westport with one of the stops the Westport Bowling Alley for the annual chili feed. After all these years these wonderful people still want to feed us dinner!

As of the completion of the 2010 OSP the Edgewood Hillwillys have chosen to retire has hosts of this event. We’ve had a fabulous time working with the folks from the Chamber, all the clubs, families and friends that continue to enjoy this event, the local businesses and the parks. Each group is the reason this event is so successful and fun!

4-Wheelin’ News DECEMBER 2010 13 Operation Shore Patrol – 2010 Region 3 The Long Beach Peninsula is the Region 3 area for Operation Shore Patrol. Linda Jessen with help from Walt and Tony has chaired this event for the past 20 plus years. One hundred and fi ve, four wheelers spent four hours cleaning different sections of the beach.

The beach this year was cleaner than in the past, but still 1500 plus pounds of garbage were collected. Clubs represented were: Flat Broke and 4-Wheelin’, Fun Time Four Wheelers, Vancouver 4-Wheelers, Trailbreakers, PNW Individual Members, Mud-A-Rama, Sand Fleas, Mud Puppies and Our Gang Off Road.

The weather in the morning was beautiful. After a quick stop at the bakery, we were on our way to make sure our section of the beach was clean. With over 13 miles of beach to rid of garbage, clubs will divide with one group working south to north and the other group working north to south.

The litter has to be delivered to the garbage truck by noon, as we threw the love seat and last bag on the truck it started to rain. Rain didn’t last long and the rest of the day was warm and sunny.

Each year the merchants in the Long Beach area have been very supportive of the four wheelers efforts. We appreciate their support and door prize donations.

After the cleanup Region 3 has their annual picnic. This year the menu was hotdogs and chili. Can’t forget the oysters! Following dinner, door prizes were distributed. This year the Region purchased door prizes. In previous years Linda approached local merchants for donations but this year because of health issues the region provided the prizes.

A special thanks to Ann Woodruff for her donation.

We especially thank the Jessens for all their years working on “Operation Shore Patrol.” This shows how much four wheelers care.
