    Correspondence of Ottoman Women 1 Running head: Correspondence of Ottoman Women The Correspondence of Ottoman Women during the Early Modern Period (16th-18th centuries): Overview on the Current State of Research, Problems, and Perspectives Marina Lushchenko Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada Correspondence of Ottoman Women 2 Abstract My main goal is to investigate problems and possible perspectives related to studies in Ottoman women’s epistolarity (16th-18th centuries). The paper starts with a review of the current state of research in this area. I then go on to discuss some of the major problems confronting researchers. Ottoman female epistolarity also offers many directions that future research may take. A socio-historical approach contributes to shed new light on the roles Ottoman women played within the family and society. A cultural approach or a gender-based approach can also provide interesting insight into Ottoman women’s epistolarity. Moreover, the fast computerization of scholarly activity suggests creating an electronic archive of Ottoman women’s letters in order to attract the attention of a wider scholarly audience to this field of research. Correspondence of Ottoman Women 3 INTRODUCTION In recent years researchers working in the field of gender studies have started to pay special attention to the place that letter-writing held in early modern women’s lives. As a source, letters provide, indeed, an incomparable insight into women’s thoughts, emotions and experiences, and help to make important advances towards a better understanding and evaluation of female education and literacy, social and gender interactions as well as roles played by women within the family circle, in society and, often, on the political stage.

Handling these processes within the framework of Sultan Süleyman’s deeds and choices, the main argument of this study is that the reputation of Sultan Süleyman in the 1520s was the result of the convergence of his actions and his projected image. In the course of this study, main events of the first ten years of Sultan Süleyman’s reign are conceptualized in order to understand the elements employed first in making a Sultan out of a Prince, then in maintaining and enhancing the sultanic image and authority. As such, this dissertation examines the rhetorical, ceremonial, and symbolic devices which came together to build up a public image for the Sultan. Contextualized within a larger framework in terms of both time and space, not only the meaning and role of each device but the way they are combined to create an image becomes clearer.

ABSTRACT This paper discusses the history of an 1845 Ottoman hospital founded by Bezm-i Alem, mother of the reigning sultan Abdülmecit I (reigned 1839-1856), embedded in the medical and political contexts of the Middle East in the nineteenth century. The main focus of this paper is the Ottoman discourse of modernization, which identified progress with modernization and westernization and included a belief in the positive character of progress, with a high degree of optimism regarding the success of the process. The Bezm-i Alem hospital illustrates the medical reality of the 19th century, reconstructed through Ottoman eyes rather than from the perspective of foreigners with their own agenda and biases. In many respects it continued previous medical traditions; other aspects reveal brand new developments in Ottoman medicine and hospital management. Ottoman medical reality was one of coexistence and rivalry: traditional conceptions of medicine and health were believed and practiced side-by- side with new western-like concepts and techniques. Erken dönemden itibaren yerli ve yabancı hanedanlarla akrabalık kuran Osmanlılar için politik evlilikler önemli bir aracı anlamına gelmekteydi. Bu vasıta, bazen Osmanlıların rakiplerine karşı bir başka devletle müşterek hareket edebilmesini sağlayan bir aracı, devletler arasında haberleşmeyi sağlayan bir vasıta, bazen de gelecekte olabilecek büyük musibetlerin engelleyicisi fonksiyonunu ihtiva etmiştir. Osmanlıların da akrabalık bağlarının önemini çok iyi kavrayan bir devlet olduğunu tarih sahnesi ortaya çıkarmıştır. Bu çalışma ile Osmanlıların yapmış oldukları politik evliliklere dayanarak kurdukları siyasi rabıtaların etkilerini, iç ve dış politikadaki yansımalarını ortaya koymak amaçlanmaktadır. This paper argues that women’s acoustic space merits closer consideration, especially since acoustic methods of communication very often could and did exceed the limits of vision and visually bounded space. This argument is based on three different case studies concern- ing Ottoman royal women of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: (1) harem women’s auditory access to imperial council meetings; (2) common petitioners’ auditory access to the mother of the sultan as she traveled by carriage through the imperial capital during her frequent processions; and (3) Qur’anic recitation and prayers as commissioned by female mosque patrons. These case studies have more wide-ranging implications in that they allow for conceptual experimentation leading towards a refinement of the categories of private/public, male/female space, based on the permeability of acoustic space. hen we speak of women’s spaces, which sounds do we usually imag- ine therein? In contrast, when envisioning Virginia Woolf’s iconic “room of one’s own,” our imagination is generally restricted to the visual image of a pleasantly appointed study room.1 If sound matters at all there, it is the smack and clatter of a typewriter (or nowadays faint tapping on a keyboard), or the absence of sound, allowing the occupant to concentrate on a creative, productive task.

    KANUNÎ SULTAN SÜLEYMAN’IN BANİLİĞİNDE AİLESİNİN YERİ Mehmet Fatih MÜDERRİSOĞLU Özet: Tarih sahnesinde I. Süleyman / Süleyman I / Süleyman – ı evvel / Kanunî Magnificent = Muhteşem gibi ad ve unvanlarla tanınan Kanunî Sultan Süleyman (1520-1566), daha çok kişiliğiyle, yaptığı seferlerle ve döneminde meydana gelen siyasi olaylarla irdelenmiştir. Oysa padişahın yeterince bilinmeyen ve tartışılmayan belki de gizemli kalan yönü ise ailesinin özellikle bazı fertlerine karşı tutku derecesindeki bağlılığı ve bu bağlamda yaptığı banilik hizmetleridir. Her şeyden önce Kanunî, tahta çıkışının ancak 30. yılında tasarlatıp inşa ettirdiği selâtin külliyeleri İstanbul ve Şam Süleymaniye’den önce, ailesi adına imâr faaliyetlerinde bulunmuştur. Babası Yavuz Sultan Selim, annesi Hafsa Sultan, baş hasekisi Hürrem Sultan, şehzadeleri Mehmet, Cihangir, Selim, Murat ve Mahmut, kızı Mihrimah Sultan ile kız kardeşi Hatice Sultan ve sadrazamı – eniştesi İbrahim Paşa’nın adını yaşatacak ya külliyeler ya da tek yapı boyutunda eserler inşa ettirmiştir. İmâr faaliyeti kimi zaman da adına eser yaptırılan kişinin mevcut külliyesine ek yapılar şeklinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Ortaya çıkan tabloya göre padişah, önceliği ailesine vermiş olmaktadır. Osmanlı hanedan geleneğinde annesi adına eser yaptıran kimi padişahlar biliniyorsa da bu derecede ailesini sahiplenen, değer veren ve onların adını yaşatacak eser yaptıran ikinci bir padişaha rastlanmaz. Kanunî bu düşüncesiyle aile fertlerini ya ölümlerinden sonra ya da yaşarken adı ister sevgi, saygı, vefa veya yüceltmek olsun, onlara toplumda saygınlık kazandırmış daha da önemlisi unutulmamaları için kalıcı eserlerle ailesinin tarihe yazılmasını sağlamıştır.
