  • Sir John Herschel and the Breithorn
298 SIR JOHN HERSCHEL AND THE BREITHORN • SIR JOHN HERSCHEL AND THE BREITHORN BY CLAIRE ELIANE ENGEL HERE is a tradition according to which the Breithorn was first climbed in 1813 by a completely unknown Frenchman, Henri 1 • • Maynard and later by Sir John Herschel. F. F. Tuckett inci- dentally mentioned the fact that Sir John Herschel had told him he had ascended the Breithorn from the Theodul in 1821 ; Tuckett had never heard of Maynard.2 Lord Minto, who went up the mountain in 1830, called it Monte Rosa and said, it was the summit ascended in I822 by Sir' John Herschel. 3 His authority vvas either Sir John himself, or J oseph-Marie Couttet who had been the first guide of both parties. Coolidge accepted 1822 as the date of Herschel's climb.4 According to Tuckett, no Zermatt guide had ever reached the summit before him, in June 1859. · Now it is obvious that there is some missing link in this story, and I • • endeavoured to find it. Thanks to the great .kindness of the Rev. Sir John Herschel, the astronomer's grandson, I am able to give the com plete story of the second ascent of the Breithorn by Sir John Herschel in 1821. His travel-diaries are kept in Slough Observatory House, the family seat, and his grandson allowed me to read them and to have his drawings photographed. I found a few more details in Sir John's letters to the Genevese astronomer Alfred Gautier vvhich are kept in the Bibliotheque Publique et U niversitaire in Geneva.

Photo: Mike Roberts The Matterhorn is undeniably the most magnificent and well-known peak in the Alps. Its bold pyramidal shape evokes emotions of wonderment and even fear in those who view it for the first time, as its four distinct faces stand omnipotent and menacing over the green meadows below. Separated by sharp ridges, the four faces are orientated to the four points of the compass, the northern aspects within Switzerland while the southern side lies in Italy. • ALPS TRILOGY Itinerary
CALIFORNIA ALPINE GUIDES ALPS GRAND TRILOGY Matterhorn, Mont Blanc & The Eiger ITINERARY Day 1: Arrival in Chamonix. The closest airport is Geneva, Switzerland. There are easy shuttle services from the airport directly to our hotel. We meet in the evening at our hotel in Chamonix and go out for dinner to discuss the upcoming adventure and do a full gear check. Day 2: An easy warm up climb in the Chamonix area, probably in the Aiguille Rouge area such as the Crochue Traverse to stretch the legs, start the acclimating process and get used to the style of climbing in the Alps. Overnight in Chamonix. Day 3: Another acclimating climb in Chamonix to further our acclimating, probably the classic Cosmiques Arete on the Aiguille du Midi. Today we will step it up a bit in altitude and technicality to help prepare for the more challenging Matterhorn and Eiger. Overnight in Chamonix. Day 4: Travel to the Tete Rouse Hut or the Cosmiques Hut on Mont Blanc. This is a easy day with a chance for some rest in the afternoon. Overnight at the hut. Day 5: Summit attempt of Mont Blanc via either the Trois Sommets Traverse or the normal Gouter Route, depending upon conditions and group goals. Either route is long and we get an early start, but probably not too early since we are not descending all the way back to town today. This way, we avoid some of the crowds on the summit and avoid the afternoon objective hazards on the descent below the hut. There are spectacular views from the top of Western Europe.

  • Programme Breithorn (224.9 Kib)
Welcome to the Swiss Mountaineering School grindelwaldSPORTS. Breithorn 4’164 m The programme: Day 1: Ascent via the normal route to the Breithorn 4‘164m Meeting point is the train station in Zermatt. Together we will walk to the valley station of the Zermatt gondola and take it up to the small Matterhorn. We ride up to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise at 3817m. Once on top, we are surrounded by the many 4000-meter peaks that Zermatt has to offer. We put on the harness and crampons and we are ready to go. First, we hike cross the Breithorn plateau, which takes about half an hour followed by an enjoyable climb to the Breithorn summit. We walk slowly, because we notice the height at every step. Breathing is harder, and every movement is more ex- hausting than at sea level. Finally, we reach the short summit ridge – ‘wow what a view’. Only another couple of meters and we are standing on the Breithorn summit, 4164 meters above sea, what an in- credible feeling. After our little break on the summit, it's time to hit back. We descend via the same route and return to the small Matterhorn. At the station, we strap off the crampons and harness and complement each other for the accomplishment of the tour. With the gondola, it goes back to Zermatt village. What you need to know… Meeting point: 9.15 am at the train station in Zermatt Your journey: There is a big car park in Täsch from where everybody needs to take the train to Zermatt – no cars allowed in Zermatt.
