A PORTRAIT OF ZERMATT

Zermatt is situated in the south-west of Switzerland, in the German- speaking part of the canton of Valais. The car-free village, which is located at the foot of the Matterhorn at 1,620 m.a.s.l., is surrounded by 38 four-thousand-metre peaks. Zermatt is not only famous for the Matterhorn. It also captivates thanks to its wonderful mountains and glaciers and its unique climate. The car-free Matterhorn village is an international meeting place in both summer and winter. Täsch and Randa also form part of the destination of Zermatt. Located just 5 km from Zermatt, Täsch is a typical Valais village and forms the gateway to this awe-inspiring mountain world. From Randa (10 km from Zermatt), you can climb the highest mountain in Switzerland, the Dom (4,545 m).

OFF TO ZERMATT

Arrival by plane Zermatt is only a few hours away from the international airports of Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Milan, and also has its own heliport which is served by the company Air Zermatt.

Arrival by train Zermatt is now even closer! Thanks to the new Lötschberg base tunnel from Frutigen (BE) to Visp (VS), the time it takes to reach Zermatt by train has been reduced considerably since December 2007.

Arrival by a special kind of train Glacier Express The Glacier Express offers a very special kind of travel experience: The journey from Zermatt to St. Morit z/ Davos or from St. Morit z/ Davos to Zermatt takes around 7 1/2 hours and crosses 291 bridges and traverses 91 tunnels. Arrival by car Since Zermatt is car-free, private vehicles are only allowed as far as Täsch (5 km from Zermatt). Parking spaces are available in the modern Matterhorn Terminal Täsch (2,000 covered spaces) or with various private suppliers (900 spaces). The shuttle trains of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn travel to the centre of Zermatt every 20 minutes and your luggage will be brought along too on the luggage trolley. At the station in Zermatt, you will either be picked up by your host or can transfer for an electric taxi. It is also possible to take a taxi to Zermatt from Täsch. Or park your car in Visp where covered parking spaces are available right by the station. Getting around in Zermatt Zermatt has always been car-free. In the village, you can get around using electric taxi, electric bus or a horse-drawn carriage. Fly & dine Visit to Zermatt’s heliport, followed by a spectacular flight around the Matterhorn with a landing at the Testa Grigia, where the landlord awaits you with specialities from the Aosta Valley. Then an adventurous journey with a Pistenbully snow vehicle via the Theodul glacier to the glacier palace on Matterhorn glacier paradise.

Wine tasting in the glacier palace Tasting of local wines of the highest quality in the highest glacier palace in the world.

Mammut via ferrata Three different routes that can be climbed individually or together. With professional guidance from local mountain guides and the security of a helmet, climbing belt and via ferrata set, the rock face is safely conquered.

Mountain bike tour 6 marked biking routes in Zermatt, Täsch and Randa with a network of 100 km.

My first 4000-metre peak The Breithorn (4,164 m) is the easiest of the four-thousand-metre peaks in the area. You can start early under the guidance of one of Zermatt’s mountain guides. Duration: Ascent approx. 2 hours.

Nordic Walking 5 routes in the Rothorn paradise and Schwarzsee paradise area (Swiss Nordic Parc) with various degrees of difficulty and a network of more than 30 km.

Starlight dinner A tasty dinner is served on the Gornergrat at 3,089 m.a.s.l. With visit to the observatory.

Summer skiing The highest and largest summer snow sports area in Europe can be found in summer at the Matterhorn glacier paradise. Depending on snow conditions, there are over 21 kilometres of pistes available. The Gravity Park with a superpipe, kickers of all sizes, rails and boxes can be used 300 days a year.

Sunrise on Rothorn paradise & Gornergrat Experience the unique spectacle of sunrise on the Gornergrat (3,089 m.a.s.l.), including wildlife watching with a guide, or on Rothorn paradise (3,103 m.a.s.l.). Breakfast buffet to follow.

Sunset dinner in your car Dinner – ranging from Gault Millau menus to natural products straight from our alpine pastures – between heaven and earth! Your first course will be served during your journey up the mountain. After a short stay on the terrace of the Restaurant Rothorn, you can enjoy your main course during your descent to the valley. WINTER ACTIVITIES

Build a snow sculpture Design your own snow bar and give it your company’s logo. Or make your company’s new product in teams and award prizes for the resulting snow sculptures.

Cross-country skiing Glide along on the surface of the snow, past small, typical Valais barns on the Täsch-Randa cross-country runs.

Curling & ice stock sport 16 curling rinks on the natural ice rink invite you to share in curling fun. Ice stock sport is one of the oldest of all sports and is very dynamic. Two ice stock sport courts are on offer on each of the artificial and natural ice rinks.

First track Enjoy undisturbed pistes – and this before the start of the official timetable! Then enjoy a substantial breakfast in the Trockener Steg pizzeria.

Heliskiing Suddenly you’re in the midst of a fairytale winter wonderland made up of mountains, slopes and valleys.

Descents by the light of the moon Enjoy fondue in the cosy setting of Rothorn paradise and the Gornergrat with a romantic descent back to the village in the moonlight – accompanied by the piste and rescue services.

Ice climbing You are standing at the foot of an icy giant, looking up at the vertical wall which rises before you like a glassy statue. Overnight stay in an igloo The igloo village awaits you beneath the Gornergrat at 2,727 m – with romantic suites for 2 and group igloos for 6. It is one of the most special hotels in the world. Enjoy a glass of champagne in the whirlpool to relax!

Ski races Who is the quickes t? Who will be the first to reach the finis h? Line up against one another in a ski race!

Ski & snowboard The Matterhorn ski paradise includes over 31 3 kilometres of pistes, stretching from Rothorn paradise (3,103 m) via Gornergrat (3,089 m) to the Matterhorn glacier paradise (3,883 m) and Schwarzsee paradise (2,583 m). You can even ski to Italy – to Breuil-Cervini a/Valtour - nenche and the Val d’Aosta.

Sledding fun 10-minute sled ride from Rotenboden (2, 81 9 m) to Riffelberg (2,582 m). Sleds can be hired from the Rotenboden station.

January Horu Trophy curling tournament One of the largest open-air tournaments in Europe

April La Patrouille des Glaciers The hardest ski mountaineering race in the world – depending on category from Zermatt to Verbier or from Arolla to Verbier – that takes place every two years

July Zermatt Marathon Marathon from St. Niklaus via Zermatt to the Riffelberg, covering 1,853 metres in altitude

August Folklore Festival Large folklore procession with around 1,200 participants through the village with subsequent celebrations and food, children’s animations and entertainment

August Matterhorn Eagle Cup Golf tournament in the middle of the Alps between Rotenboden and Riffelberg in the Gornergrat area between 2,800 and 2,500 m.a.s.l.

August International Matterhorn Race Mountain race from Zermatt to the Schwarzsee. Covers 12.49 kilometres and 1,001 metres in altitude
