It is a quotation from the gospels where Deputy Grand Knight Merv Albert (Mary Jane) Jesus asks “Who do you say that I am?” That is the theme 713-899-1513 we as a parish are reflecting on this year. [email protected] This is an excellent question that Jesus asks and one Chancellor that deserves our contemplation. Each of us needs to ask Brian Gray (Julie) ourselves, who do I say that Jesus is? 832-767-9465 [email protected] We can all come up with answers that are versions of Jesus is our Lord and Financial Secretary Savior, Jesus is our God, Jesus is the Word made flesh. But it is not our answer Larry Hogan (Barbara) in words that matters as much as how to we answer that question with our lives. 281-772-8958 There is an old saying, show me your friends and I will show you who you [email protected] are. President Richard Carter (Cindy)

Vice-President Bill Vacek (Mary)

Secretary Larry Hildebrand (Pat) This past December Paul demonstrated to all of us the first prin- cipal of Charity. Paul recognized that Brother Richard Hixon had Treasurer to focus entirely on his wife’s recovery, and their children. As a John Adams (Pam) result, the Hixon home would not be able to put up the Preston- wood Christmas decorations that they have done for many Year 2019 years. Paul recruited the help of Brother Clay Evans to organize Richard Carter (Cindy) a group of Brother Knights along with members of the ACTS Larry Hildebrand (Pat) community. A Saturday was chosen to put up all the Christmas Matt Maciejeski decorations at the Hixon home. Paul can often be found work- ing at the Saturday hall workdays and volunteering to help serve Year 2020 food for many of our catering jobs. He is always ready to help when asked. He has been a steadfast Inside Guard for many Larry LaHaie (Melinda) years. Thank you Paul for reminding us of Charity. Smitty Schmidt (Paula) Bill Vacek (Mary)

Grand Knight’s Report (Continued from Page 1)

Matt expanded on the transition at Prince of Peace from maintenance versus missionary parish that was first presented early last fall. Prince of Peace is the largest organization to commit to this new approach for sharing the maintenance versus missionary parish. I think every member of the parish should reflect on the handout on Page 6. Then, after reflection, evaluate your ministry within Prince of Peace. As Knights we have a responsibility to grow in our faith and continue to evaluate how we are accomplishing this goal. We all have a faith ministry even if it is only to attend Mass on Sunday. But, Christ taught us to all be dis- ciples and to grow in our faith. We need to be missionaries. So, as you reflect on the handout, think about your mission and how you can grow. Then think about how you can give a little more time to help the mission of Prince of Peace. I continue to repeat, but it is worth repeating, one of the easiest ways to grow is to volunteer for one of the ministries at Mass (usher, EMHC, greeter). There is a lot to learn from this maintenance versus mission philosophy and I hope to use this handout to help me as your Grand Knight. I intend to share with you my thoughts on how we can apply these lessons to our Council.

NOTICE! March Meeting will be Thursday, March 7th. Our regular meeting night is also Ash Wednesday. This should be a day of prayer and preparation for Lent. It would be inappropriate to hold a business meeting on that night. For this reason, we have moved the meeting to Thursday. The start time, 6:30 pm, will be the same. Please attend. Share this message with as many of our Brother Knights as possible so no one shows up to a closed hall on Wednesday.

February began with Clergy Appreciation Night where Brother Knights and their wives gathered to honor all our priest and deacons of Galveston-Houston for their service. Joining us was Father Peter Da- vids and his wife Judy. Deacon Jeff Schmelter also joined us as well. It was a great evening which in- cluded remarks by Cardinal DiNardo. I wish I could do justice to his words. I would like to share some of my take-away. Cardinal DiNardo acknowledge that some in the clergy have failed their flock and the church did not do a good job with transparency. This has justifiably caused anger and frustration in the lai- ty. He said that the USCCB is working to bring greater accountability and transparency from the church leadership. The Cardinal thanked all the Knights in Houston for their service to the community and church. He complimented the Knights for always supporting the clergy and recalled the Knight’s “In Soli- darity with our Priests” when the magnitude of the clergy problem was realized early in 2000. He knows that the Knights will continue to support the clergy and the church. He also asked that we all pray for the clergy and the success of the meeting at the Vatican Summit in February. Vince Bonura and his cooking team provided two Alpha Meals at Prince of Peace this month. I want to thank all the brothers for stepping up to provide these meals. I know all those who attend the Alpha meetings enjoy them. Regina Caeli is the newest parish in the Archdioceses of Galveston-Houston. There was a desire of their Pastor and interest in the parish to have a Knights of Columbus Council. Enough current Knights and men from the parish showed sufficient interest for them to start one immediately. The only thing they needed was a place to hold a 1st Degree to bring the new men into the Knights. Thanks to the efforts of our Worthy Deputy Grand Knight Merv Albert, an Admissions Degree for Regina Caeli was arranged for Fri- day, February 22nd at the Zaka Road Hall. Merv had to delay his plans to attend the beginning of the Fourth Degree Exemplification which also started on the same Friday night. I also want to thank Brothers Smitty Schmidt and Larry Hogan who took on the job of registering all the candidates, and Matt Maciejeski for coming and helping. There were 15 candidates who became Brother Knights that evening including one, Mac Sanford, from 8482, one from 8771, and the rest from Regina Caeli. The Rangel Agency First Degree Team performed the ceremony and did a fantastic job. Merv and Mary Jane also prepared gumbo for the dinner after the exemplification. The gumbo was great. Our First Annual Mardi Gras Dinner Dance is on March 2nd which we are co-hosting with the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. This is a dinner dance with a live band. A catered Cajun dinner will be on the menu and cold beer and wine will be available for those connoisseurs of Cajun cuisine. The tickets are on- ly $35.00 each and there are sponsorships available which will include complimentary tickets. The band has been used by a Brother Knight and he gave it great reviews. All of you should plan on attending even if, like me, you can’t dance. (Continued on Page 6)

Grand Knight’s Report (Continued from Page 5) Our Lenten Fish Frys will begin on March 8th at both the Zaka Road Hall and Prince of Peace Communi- ty Center. The fish fry will begin at 5 pm at each location. We will have bingo at the hall and beer and wine will be available. We need everyone’s help. There are a lot of opportunities to participate by preparing the fish, serving, ticket sales and cleanup. Because of work responsibilities, some brothers cannot be available until 7:30 or 8:00 pm. Their help is still needed. We serve until 8 pm at both locations and then we begin to clean up. Come on out and help. Renew old friendships and make new friends with brothers you may not have previously met. As always, the second Saturday is a workday at the hall. This month it is on March 9th. It is important that we have a good turnout. We need to clean out the storage container and move the work bench to make room for the new zero-radius mower the home association purchased. There are likely many items which have accumulated over the years in this container. In addition, we need to clean the hall for the fish frys. The tables need a thorough cleaning as well as the kitchen. Please plan on attending. The work party begins at 8 am and will end no later than 12:00 noon.

Correction to February’s Grand Knight’s Report: As many of my brothers realized, as they read last month’s Grand Knight’s Report, I forgot a really-really big day we should remember, at least for all my Brother Knights who are fathers, grandfathers, and the few who are also great-grandfathers. This was obvi- ously Mother’s Day. In all my reviews I did not catch this omission. How I could forget a celebration that represents one of the greatest joys that my wife, De, has ever experience is beyond me. I only have one ex- cuse, I’m a guy and sometimes we forget the most important things.

Vivat Jesus! Dave

Founders Day! March 29 Fr. Michael J. McGivney, the oldest of 13 born to Irish immigrants, was ordained a priest in 1877 for what was then the Diocese of Hartford, Connecticut. Catholics were a mi- nority in New Haven, where Fr. McGivney served as a parish priest, and waves of immigrants were greeted by anti-Catholic sentiments. Recognizing the struggle of many Catholic immigrants to assimilate into American socie- ty and the economy, Fr. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal mutual aid society in the basement of St. Mary’s Parish. Known for his tireless work for the care of widows and orphans, he died of pneumonia in 1890 at age 38. Today the Knights of Columbus is the largest lay Catholic organization in the world with 1.9 million mem- bers globally and over 107,800 members in Councils throughout Texas. He was recognized as “Venerable” by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008. “Out of love for God’s people, he created the Knights of Columbus as an organization designed to strengthen the faith of husbands and fathers while providing for their families in time of death and bereavement,” said Arch- bishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, Supreme Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus. “Fr. McGivney’s love for the poor, the outcast, the orphan, and the widow remains the true North Star of everything the order does in service to one and in service to all,” he added.

Recycle Day at the Zaka Road Hall by Richard Carter On February 12th a second work party was organized by Matt Maciejeski to load up all the recycled metal and haul it to the salvage yard. John Cabori, Greg Gonzales, Bill Vasek, Larry Hildebrand, Jim Vossler, Bob Chaya, Larry LaHaie, and Richard Carter showed up to help. Together we loaded up two trailers and three pickup beds with recy- clables for the trip. The Council recovered $301.42 from the scrap metal. Remember Brother Knights “Don’t throw away those aluminum cans or any other metal for that matter. Bring them to the hall and we will re- cycle them and donate the cash to the general fund.”

Maybe Not You are never too young or too old to consider pur- chasing life insurance. If you have a financial need for coverage, or will in the future, a permanent life insurance policy can be just the thing you need. When you are young and presumably healthy, cover- age will be very inexpensive when compared to purchasing the same poli- cies when you are older. If you’ve put off purchasing coverage, or you realize that you may need additional insurance, the Order may still be able to help you, even if other companies cannot. In fact, in 2012, the issue age of our permanent life insurance products was extended to age 80, and in 2014, the issue age of our term insurance was extended to age 70. Naturally, your health, and whether or not you smoke, will be taken into consideration, so under- writing standards for risk and age apply. But, the extensions are a great blessing for me – and it could be for you too. Now I can help members that I couldn’t help before. Are you or one of your Brother Knights one of those members? Whether you’re 18 or 80, the Knights of Columbus has products that will work for you and your family. I look forward to discussing coverage with you.

Men’s Retreat at Holy Name Retreat Center by Clay Evans Below is a photo of our Knights of Columbus and parish members who attended the annual Prince of Peace Holy Name Retreat held in mid January this and every year. Jim Vossler, Mike Brzezniak and Jim Schier, all Knights along with Terry Ward, are our Prince of Peace parish coordinators for spreading the word and for attendance at this retreat. There are many Knights who attend this retreat annually and it is a wonderful way to begin each new year as we face old, new and ever challenging issues and complications in our lives at the beginning of every year. It is this retreat that sets many of us on a better path and gives us an added dose of God’s Grace and courage to benefit from His presence as we face these challenges. This year the retreat was dedicated to Joan Hixon, wife of Knight Richard Hixon. Special prayers were also offered for our own Fourth Degree Knight and Prince of Peace Dea- con Jeff Schmelter, who is seated front and center in the photo and who is undergoing treatment for cancer. Please continue to keep Richard & Joan Hixon and Deacon Jeff Schmelter in your prayers.

UNPLANNED The movie about Abby Johnson's pro-life conversion has found a distributor and will be coming to 800 screens in March. Pure Flix, the distributor for God's Not Dead, is releasing Unplanned on 800 movie screens March 29, 2019. Unplanned is a dramatic film adaption of Abby Johnson's best-selling 2010 autobiographical book of the same name. It tells the story of Johnson's journey from Planned Parenthood facility manager to pro-life activist. In the movie, John- son's character is warned by Planned Parenthood that by crossing to the pro-life side she's made an enemy of "one of the most powerful organizations on the planet." Blake Kanicka, music supervisor for Unplanned, said that nine out of the 10 initial requests he'd made for licens- ing were denied. Among those turning the request down were Disney, Sony/ATV and Universal Music. Some faith-based bands also denied the filmmakers use of their songs, telling Kanicka that they could not risk the possible controversy. Actress Ashley Bratcher (War Room, 90 Minutes in Heaven) who plays Johnson, was warned that she would probably be blacklisted for acting in the movie. The $6 million cost for making Unplanned was financed in part by Mike Lindell, the multimillionaire founder of My Pillow, who invested $1 million in the film . Watch for screening in March in a theater in Houston. See details for the movie at: https://www.unplannedfilm.com/
