PG 2 | ST. LAURENCE CATHOLIC CHURCH Pray. Fast. Give Alms. READINGS FOR THE WEEK FEB / MAR

Repeat! (#1110 in your Gather Book) SUNDAY Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading LV 19:1-2, 17-18 Ash Wednesday is upon us. Our Lenten period of repentance begins this Second Reading 1 COR 3:16-23 very week. 23 Gospel MT 5:38-48 MONDAY Most of us will come to church to be marked with a sign of ashes, that First Reading JAS 3:13-18 sign which reminds us of our great need for humility, as we are but God’s Gospel MK 9:14-29 creatures. From ashes we have come, and to ashes we will return. For 40 days, we will journey, doing our best as He told us to do in Matthew 6:1- 24 6, 16-18: Pray, fast, give alms, repeat. TUESDAY First Reading JAS 4:1-10 Our Lord instructs us how we are to fulfill our Lenten duty. When you Gospel MK 9:30-37 give alms, make it an anonymous gift. No one other than God needs to 25 know that you have loved your neighbor by sharing the material gifts WEDNESDAY that God has given you. “And your Father who sees in secret will repay ASH WEDNESDAY you.” Alms can be an act of kindness, a good deed given to a stranger, an First Reading JL 2:12-18 unexpected need of someone else fulfilled. Not just manna. But it should Second Reading 2 COR 5:20—6:2 26 Gospel MT 6:1-6, 16-18 be a true gift, not just something that you can do without.

We fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, limiting our intake of the THURSDAY First Reading DT 30:15-20 good food that the Lord has provided. A mortification of our bodies as Gospel LK 9:22-25 an offering of love and repentance for our sins and the sins of the world. Jesus told us not to look like a “Gloomy Gus” when fasting. Just as alms 27 are private, so is the fact that you are fasting. This means I should not FRIDAY whine about it to my husband. Nor should I go out to lunch and eat little, First Reading IS 58:1-9A making a prideful display of false piety. The offering is to be made joyously Gospel MT 9:14-15 as an act of love. I repent of my sins! 28 SATURDAY Pray. I need to pray every day, always. But during First Reading IS 58:9B-14 Lent, I pray more. “But when you pray, go to your Gospel LK 5:27-32 inner room, close the door, and pray to your 29 Father in secret.” For me, that means I go to

the Chapel of Divine Mercy and pray before the SUNDAY First Sunday of Lent Blessed Sacrament in Adoration. I lift up my eyes First Reading GN 2:7-9; 3:1-7 to Him and I worship Him. Second Reading ROM 5:12-19 OR 5:12, 17-19 1 Gospel MT 4:1-11 I have a new tee shirt which states, Eucharistic Adoration – Praise & Worship for Introverts. That is me. I go to the chapel. I praise Him in my PRAYING THE NEWS | FEBRUARY 23, 2020 soul and sing to Him in my heart. I am blessed. “Let no one deceive himself...For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of I invite you to spend time regularly with Jesus in God…” the Chapel of Divine Mercy during Lent. He keeps I COR 3:18-19 telling me He wants more. The “more” He wants is YOU. O Lord, deception is all around and is infectious – fake social media, distorted news coverage, scams and rumors. Lord, help us to be wise in Fran Magelssen your eyes; to take time to discern the truth in all things. Protect us from Coordinator, St. Laurence Adoration Ministry the trap of cynicism and “the ends justify the means.” May we rather live in faith that great good exists and love does not fail. [email protected] Jesus, we trust in you. Amen †

PG 9 | ST. LAURENCE CATHOLIC CHURCH LivingLiving asas DisciplesDisciples MINISTRY HIGHLIGHT: ADORATION MINISTRY

Adoration Ministry prays for our families, our church, and our world before our Lord who is present before our very eyes in the Blessed Sacrament. The prayer is done in silence however He calls you to pray. Some pray the rosary, some pray the divine mercy chaplet, some talk to our Lord, and some sit in silent adoration. Some use their hour to immerse themselves in the word by reading scripture in the presence of the Word. It can be a time to praise, a time to give thanks, a time to petition Him. He is there always to help you discern the direction in your life. The Ministry has over 325 active members. Two persons pray each hour of the day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. By committing to a regular weekly hour of Adoration or being a regular substitute the opportunity for prayer before His Presence is available to all in the church. Not only our parishioners but our community of saints from all over Sugar Land come to pray before Him. Visitors from afar also stop in to pray. “How can we come to know Christ,” he asked?
