Council Officers Chaplain KNIGHTBEATKNIGHTBEAT Rev. John Keller 281-469-2686 [email protected] Meetings 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 7:00 pm—KC Hall—9623 Zaka Road Grand Knight Dave Lewis (DeAnn) 713-628-8558 Grand Knight’s Message by Dave Lewis [email protected] Deputy Grand Knight I suspect you experienced the same emotions of frustrations, Merv Albert (Mary Jane) anger, disappointment and confusion, among many other feel- 713-899-1513 ings, after the release of the Pennsylvania grand jury report last [email protected] week. I know from discussions with many people that the reac- Chancellor Brian Gray (Julie) tions go from prayers, to turning away from the Catholic 832-767-9465 Church. I hope and pray that this last emotion is only tempo- [email protected] rary. I had mixed emotions whether or not I would comment in Financial Secretary my monthly report. I have great difficulty putting to paper what Larry Hogan (Barbara) is in my heart. The following are my personal thoughts. I can- 281-772-8958 not think of a greater evil than to hurt a child either physically or emotionally. Jesus [email protected] even told us this during his ministry on earth. This evil committed against a child is Treasurer so great I cannot imagine someone giving into this weakness. Using a position of Hugh McCrea (Theresa) 281-370-0023 power to extort an adult into an unwilling act is another intolerable evil. [email protected] Over the history of our there have been many leaders who have Recorder committed evil acts. As we were reminded this past Sunday, one of the Disciples Chuck Stancil (Terri) would eventually betray our Lord. One Disciple, in the presence of our Lord every 281-433-3461 day, and hearing the word of God through Jesus’ lips, still gave into evil. In my [email protected] opinion, sexually abusing a child is an even greater evil. However, the eleven other Warden Disciples did not abandon the church but, through the Holy Spirit, continued to Eugene “Smitty” Schmidt (Paula) spread the word of Jesus. We should follow the example of these Disciples. 713-818-3646 [email protected] For me, the only thing in my power to do is pray that hearts are changed and Advocate those who committed these evil acts will commit to a life of penance seeking God’s Matt Maciejeski forgiveness. I personally plan to work harder to increase my prayers for the church, 713-858-2056 and pray for guidance for our to find and implement solutions that will [email protected] demonstrate to all Catholics, and the public, their commitment to address this prob- Inside Guard lem, and urge my Brother Knights to keep our faith strong. Culture of Life Report By Todd Dorn

WASHINGTON—MARCH 20,2018—Excerpts of Press Release

Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York, chair of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued the following statement praising the work of pro-life pregnancy centers on the occasion of oral ar- guments being heard by the U. S. Supreme Court in NIFLA v Becerra. Cardinal Dolan’s full statement follows: “Pro-life pregnancy care centers embody everything that is right and good in our nation: generosity, com- passion and love that is offered to support both mother and child. But rather than applauding and encourag- ing the selfless and life-affirming work of these centers, some governments want to force them to provide free advertising for the violent act of abortion in direct violation of their pro-life convictions and the First Amend- ment. The United States Supreme Court cannot let this happen. We pray that the Court will do the right thing and uphold our fundamental right to free speech when it decides this case”. The USCCB and several other groups filed a friend-of-the-court brief before the Supreme Court support- ing the pro-life pregnancy centers in this important free speech case. The other groups are the California Catholic Conference, the Catholic Health Association of the United States, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, the Christian Legal Society and Agudath Israel of America. The full text of the brief is available online: http:\\usccb.org/about/general-counsel/amicus-briefs/upload/NIFLA-Amicus-2018-01-13F.pdf.

That’s peace of mind, and that’s what we offer with every product in our portfolio. We guarantee the cash value in your whole life policies will be there. On top of those product guarantees, I guarantee that I will offer professional, high-quality service that you would expect from our organization. Our Order is among the highest rated life insurers in North America. AM Best has rated the Knights of Colum- bus “A++, Superior” for 40 consecutive years. It’s a testament to our track record for excellence and security. I would suggest that a principal reason that we were able to achieve those accolades is because we remain steadfastly committed to the vision of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney by providing life insurance by Brother Knights for Brother Knights. That commitment is an essential core value of the Knights of Columbus, and our core values permeate all lev- els of our organization. We pledge to serve our Brother Knights, and their families, according to our Golden Rule: “In all my professional relationships, I pledge myself to the following rule of conduct: I shall, in light of all condi- tions surrounding those I serve, render that service which, under the same circumstances, I would apply to my- self.” Let’s talk soon to discuss how our products can bring that peace of mind to you and your family. A Message from Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson

August 21, 2018 Worthy Chaplains and Dear Brother Knights,

The issues that have come to light concerning sexual abuse by Archbishop Theodore McCarrick and in the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report are cause for grave concern among Catholics and Brother Knights. Many feel deeply betrayed by those whom they long held in high regard. Such concerns are shared not just in the United States, but in Europe, Latin America and elsewhere.

These sins of commission and omission have sent the Church we love, the Church we serve and the Church that Jesus Christ established into convulsions. Sadly, the disgrace not only is borne by the perpetrators, it hurts us all, as does the silence of shepherds who have ignored the cries of their flocks.

There are many wonderful and faithful laborers in the vineyard of the Lord among our priests and bishops. However, it is clear that in addition to devastating criminal acts, we have seen many other moral failings by clergy that represent a crisis of commitment to the Gospel. Too often the needs of victims have been subordinated to a distorted sense of mercy toward the perpetrators or an instinct for clerical self-preservation. The sexual acts — both criminal and non-criminal — highlight the need to recover a respect for and a renewed commitment to the priestly promises of celibacy.

The Knights of Columbus has supported the pastoral and charitable work of our bishops and priests since our founding by the Venerable Father Michael McGivney. We understand that the priest should lead the parish and the bishop should be the center of unity in a diocese. But we — like all Catholics — are painfully aware of the wreckage that ensues when elements of this leadership are abdicated by evil actions whether directly perpetrat- ed or covered up.

Now, the Knights of Columbus — laymen, priests and chaplains together — will have an important role to play in rebuilding the Church. We must commit the Knights of Columbus to work for repentance, reform and rebuilding of the Church.

Repentance should include a full accounting of the misdeeds by those who have committed them. Archbishop McCarrick and others at fault owe us a full account of their actions, motivations and cover-ups. After years of having us confess to them, it is now time for them to come clean about what they have done and what they have failed to do.

This will also help increase the recognition that clerical sexual abuse is a global problem that must be ad- dressed at the highest levels of the Catholic Church. Moreover, priests and bishops who refuse to live accord- ing to their promises of celibacy should be removed from public ministry, not out of retribution, but for the protection of the faithful and to prevent future variations of the scandal we now suffer.

Reform must include many good ideas that have been proposed, such as a full and complete investigation of sexual abuse led by an independent commission that includes laity; complete transparency by the Catholic hi- erarchy into all matters of criminal sexual misconduct past or future; an expansion of the zero tolerance policy to include sexual activity or misconduct by clerics including bishops, and by seminarians; and a call for faith- fulness by all members of the clergy, including bishops. There must also be an independent ethics hotline for reporting of criminal and other conduct at odds with Catholic teaching on the clerical state of life; and there must be protections against retaliation.

(Continued on Page 8)

Page 7

A Message from Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson (Continued from Page 7) Such reforms will be difficult for a Church largely unused to them, and we must support our bishops and our priests in embracing these reforms in order to rebuild.

We can help to rebuild our Church in several ways. Above all else, Knights — and our chaplains — must em- brace love of God and love of neighbor. This is Christ’s great commandment and the founding mission of our Order. It is also exactly the opposite of the rejection of God and exploitation of neighbor that our Church has witnessed in these scandals.

Shortly before becoming Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger decried the “filth” in the Church “even among those, who in the priesthood, ought to belong totally” to Christ. He also provided the antidote, stating at other times that what the Church needs now more than anything else is “saints.” Pope Francis reiter- ated Pope Benedict’s sentiments in his letter on Aug. 20.

In the days ahead, the Knights of Columbus will help renew our Church on a national level through a Novena of Masses in reparation for these sins that have so grievously wounded the Body of Christ. I take this oppor- tunity to ask that you offer this Novena of Masses for our Church at your earliest opportunity.

Beginning in November, the Knights of Columbus will sponsor, in cooperation with the Shrine of St. Jean Vi- anney in Ars, France, a national tour of the relic of the heart of this great patron saint of priests. In the coming weeks, I will share more details with you about this initiative.

We will also continue to strengthen and rebuild our Church at the level of our families and parishes through our Building the Domestic Church program. Its twin elements of imbuing families with faith and strengthening parish life are critical to providing a Catholic Church that rebuilds based on the Gospel principles of love of God and love of neighbor. Together with our recently announced “Faith In Action” initiative, we will strive to make our parishes truly become, in the words of Pope Francis, “a family of families.”

Now is the time for all brother Knights to stand steadfast in faith, as Catholics and as gentlemen. We will assist priests, bishops and our fellow Catholics in helping the Church chart a course for the future that puts Christ at the center, so that truly we may say, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” This is the moment in which Knights — including in a special way our priest members — can be part of a great renewal for good in our Church. And as we strive to follow the Lord more closely in the days ahead, may he deliver us from every evil and in his mercy graciously grant his Church peace and unity. In closing, know that your faithful witness and sacrifice can bring inspiration and hope to millions of your fel- low Catholics. It will be needed in the days ahead more than ever before. And to every priest and bishop whose commitment and dedication to our Order and to our Church has been faithful and exemplary, please ac- cept my gratitude in both a personal way and on behalf of the Knights of Columbus.

Let each one of us prayerfully invoke the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, so that in the words of St. Maximilian Kolbe, our hearts would be cleansed and themselves become immaculate, similar and like unto her own heart.

Fraternally, Carl A. Anderson Supreme Knight

CONGRATULATIONS TO WORTHY PAST STATE DEPUTY SK TERRY SIMONTON UPON HIS SELECTION AS OUR NEW SUPREME DIRECTOR.

FOURTH DEGREE CHALICE Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Assemblies display a strong fraternal spirit to the death of a Sir Knight member through a meaningful and personal gesture of gifting a Chalice to memorialize a Sir Knight. When a Sir Knight passes away the Assembly purchases a Chalice and engraves the name of the Sir Knight on the base. The Chalice is then donated to a local priest, bishop or missionary in the name of the deceased Sir Knight, so that each time the Chalice is used for Mass, the Sir Knight and his family are remembered in a special way. The Chalice Program is a beautiful and lasting gesture to pay tribute to a Sir Knight and their fami- ly. It offers great comfort to the family members of a deceased Sir Knight that a chalice presented for use in offering the holy sacrifice of the Mass will continue to honor their loved one.

The Patriotic Rosary will be held on November 15 at 7:00 pm in the Mary Chapel at Prince of Peace. All Knights and their family are en- couraged to attend. Pat Frazier, Patriotic Rosary Chairperson for Catholic Daughters Court of the Holy Family #2597, is coordi- nating the participants. She can be reached at [email protected] or 409- 728-5200. Pat is requesting eleven (11) Sir Knights to be available for one decade of the rosary, one (1) Sir Knight for the leading prayer and ten (10) Sir Knights for each Hail Mary. Fourth Degree Knights should contact Grand Knight Dave Lewis at 713-628-8558 and let him know that you will be able to participate.

And along with it a countdown began. On June 30th, 2019, at the end of the day, the countdown ends. On the morning of July 1, 2019 to be an ac- tive member of the 4th Degree Color Corps you will have to be wearing the new uniform. There is no requirement in the 4th Degree to own a uniform and participate as a member of the Color Corps. The decision to purchase the uniform is personal and each is entitled to make it. But one simple fact remains; on July 1st, the only option you will have to be an active member of the 4th Degree Color Corps will be to have and wear the new uniform. For Turnouts/Fallouts, Parades, Funeral Masses, Posting at Visitation Ser- vices, you cannot participate without wearing the uniform. If there is a request for a 4th Degree Honor Guard and if there is an insufficient number of uniformed SKs available the only option will be to regretfully decline and the 4th Degree will not participate in the event. Worthy Faithful Navigators, you are tasked with appointing SKs to be your Assemblies Color Corps Com- manders. If they are not wearing the new uniform on July 1st then they will no longer be eligible to serve as your CCC. If their decision is to not purchase the uniform you need to consider sooner rather than later finding their replacement. That man should be up to speed by July 1. Worthy Faithful Navigators, by accepting the nomination, and being elected to your Office, you are the lead- er of your Assemblies Color Corps. To be that leader you too need to be wearing the uniform. Without it you will not be able to fulfill all the responsibilities of the office you now hold. Worthy Captains and Admirals, by accepting the nomination, and being elected to your Office you are the back-up for the Faithful Navigator. With that responsibility comes the potential to be the leader of your Assem- blies Color Corps. To be that leader you too need to be wearing the uniform. As men, none of us are exempt from our frailties and mistakes; we are all sinners and there is no excuse for the tragedies inflicted by a very small few to far too many. Perhaps at no other time in the history of our Church has there been a greater need for true men of the Catholic Faith to be more visible. As Catholic Men we need to stand to support and defend the Church given to us by Jesus Christ. We are his soldiers. Wear the uniform.

Vivat Jesus! Viva Cristo Rey!
