L’ immagine evangelica della Chiesa dei poveri è una metafora che appartiene alla mitologia biblica, ma che non ha un riscontro oggettivo nella realtà. L’ingente patrimonio mondiale dì Santa Romana Chiesa, gestito dal potere politico più autoritario della terra, è la chiave di accesso per la comprensione di questa struttura divenuta una mastodontica multinazionale. Bisogna convincersi, tanto gli ecclesiastici quanto i laici si servono delle risorse economiche del Vaticano non per compiere opere umanitarie, ma per un evidente tornaconto personale. Le opere umanitarie che vengono realizzate servono più che altro a dare un’immagine di facciata, una parvenza dietro la quale poter operare indisturbatamente nell’ambito affaristico. Le stesse cifre ufficiali della C.E.I. relative al triennio 2002-2004 ammettono che il 46% dell’incasso viene destinato alle esigenze del culto (adunate oceaniche, viaggi papali, ecc. ecc.), il 34% al sostentamento del clero, e soltanto il residuo 20% ad interventi caritatevoli. Ma gran parte di quest’ultima percentuale è destinata all’Opera Missionaria, e quindi a un lavoro di propaganda e proselitismo in aree non cristiane del mondo. I presupposti ideologici e morali su cui verte la fede sono assolutamente antitetici con il significato di religione. Per questo il popolo dei fedeli, che identifica il proprio credo nell’istituzione della chiesa, deve sapere che essa rappresenta tutt’altro che i principi di Gesù Cristo. La storia ci insegna che i casi di personaggi ecclesiastici invischiati nel marasma economico sono numerosi. Ma non solo. Ormai non esiste quasi più nessuno che sia all’oscuro dei due millenni di soprusi commessi dalla Chiesa: omicidi, stragi, torture, roghi, autodafè, persecuzioni, razzismo, xenofobia, antisemitismo, crociate e guerre di ogni tipo, sfruttamento delle donne, oscurantismo, false donazioni, manipolazioni storiche, reati economici, reati politici e ingerenze di potere, sessuofobia, abusi sessuali e pedofilia, etc. Alcune vicende rappresentano per l’opinione pubblica una sorta di verità non espressa, o piuttosto una potenziale alterazione della realtà, in quanto molti misteri appaiono come volutamente irrisolti ed oculatamente dimenticati, e per tali ragioni destano molti dubbi ed altrettanti interrogativi. Tali perplessità, che alcuni depistatori vorrebbero attribuire al solo senso dei comuni pregiudizi, nel tentativo di minimizzarle per ridurle ad irrazionali incertezze, non sono la fonte di uno scetticismo generale, ma piuttosto le sapienti considerazioni della maggioranza dei cittadini, scaturite da un passato storico-ecclesiastico tra i più torbidi che l’umanità abbia mai conosciuto, ed un presente quanto mai arcano nella sua enigmatica complessità. Tutto ciò nei secoli scorsi, era già stato individuato come status antireligioso da chiunque non fosse offuscato interamente dalla fede tradizionale. Non a caso sono stati proprio i più devoti a ripudiare la chiesa ed i suoi interessi extra evangelici. L’esempio culminante è rappresentato dai deisti, ossia da coloro che hanno sempre sostenuto, con devozione e coerenza, l’esistenza di un Dio creatore e ordinatore dell’universo, definendola ‘religione naturale’, la quale è intrinseca all’individuo e può essere sostenuta con l’esercizio della ragione, tanto quanto la credenza dell’immortalità dell’ anima. Tuttavia, pur ammettendo l’esistenza di Dio, essi negavano validità a tutte le ‘religioni positive’, ossia alle dottrine e alle forme di culto fondate sulla rivelazione o sull’insegnamento specifico di qualche Chiesa. Nel corso del XVII secolo i principali esponenti del movimento, in particolare Edward Herbert of Cherbury e John Toland, si schierarono a difesa della libertà di coscienza, sottoponendo ad una critica radicale gli elementi sovrannaturali e mistici della tradizione ebraica e cristiana. Nei primi anni del XVIII secolo filosofi come Matthew Tindal ed Anthony Collins inasprirono l’attacco razionalista contro l’ortodossia religiosa, screditando i miracoli ed i misteri della Bibbia mediante una rigorosa analisi storico- filologica dei testi sacri. In Scozia, le argomentazioni dei deisti inglesi contro il fanatismo e l’intolleranza influenzarono considerevolmente David Hume. In Francia, Voltaire intensificò la critica razionalista della Bibbia, ma non si discostò dai deisti inglesi laddove questi affermavano l’esistenza di una divinità. Varie versioni del deismo vennero sostenute da celebri figure dell’illuminismo europeo, approdando anche in Nord America sul finire del XVIII secolo. Numerosi altri deisti della storia hanno mantenuta intatta la loro fede in Dio, in maniera inversamente proporzionale alla bontà del loro rapporto con la chiesa. Ciò dovrebbe costituire un esempio universale per coloro i quali si dichiarano credenti, in quanto la fede dovrebbe essere soggettività assoluta e libera, progettata ed espressa tramite le proprie scelte, senza quindi l’intervento delle istituzioni, e senza il ricorso all’effetto salvifico della morale tradizionale o ancor meno alla fede politico-religiosa. Nel cristianesimo la fede è il rapporto di libera accettazione dell’individuo con Dio, e tale dovrebbe rimanere. Il fatto che ci sia un’istituzione governativa a gestire questo rapporto personale nell’ambito strettamente spirituale, è di per sé un fattore altamente immeritevole, tanto immorale quanto indegno, nonché vergognoso ed assolutamente anticrIstico, quindi antireligioso. Ciò, senza ombra di dubbio, è riconducibile al disagio culturale che imperversa nella società attuale, in quanto regolamentata da una concezione capitalistica che ne determina in maniera assolutistica i suoi meccanismi. L’accettazione passiva di questa situazione iniqua, coincide con la forma di falsa coscienza, poiché tende a privare l’uomo della responsabilità, così come il progressivo sviluppo tecnologico della società da una parte, e l’aumento della burocrazia dall’ altra, sono serviti soltanto a preservare le istituzioni dello stato, allontanando progressivamente i cittadini dalla partecipazione effettiva alla vita culturale della società. Il dramma dell’assenza di empatia tra i popoli è peculiare dell’incomunicabilità che affligge la nostra epoca. E quando la cultura scarseggia ecco che la fede illusoria della religione trionfa, nel senso che si insinua facilmente nei meandri dell’ignoranza. Non a caso il popolo dei credenti rimane tranquillo e sottomesso nella sua posizione, senza avere reale consapevolezza di cosa sia il cristianesimo, tanto a livello storico quanto in ambito teologico. Ed è proprio questo che la Chiesa vuole, ossia un gregge sempre più numeroso che si accontenti di autodefinirsi cristiano-cattolico, senza sapere cosa sia in realtà il cristianesimo, in modo tale che il pensiero collettivo coincida con quello delle istituzioni cattoliche. Un popolo remissivo, che non deve porsi troppe domande, ma che, al contrario, si accontenti delle risposte che la Chiesa gli impone. L’interesse economico è l’obiettivo primario della Santa Sede, e come tale si alimenta dell’ignoranza e della sottomissione della moltitudine per poter continuare a proliferare. Grazie all’imponente effetto mediatico, il Vaticano regola ogni cosa creando una visione virtuale della realtà, una mistificazione che mira all’idea della salvezza, tentando quindi con ogni mezzo di spacciarla per volontà divina. Il risultato è che, ancora oggi, molti dei fedeli si illudono di essere credenti, essendosi persuasi ingenuamente dell’idea che sia naturale identificare la Chiesa con Dio. Il volere divino, a cui per tradizione la massa deve sottostare, è annunciato puntualmente dall’opulento e solenne monarca della multinazionale cattolica: il papa. Costui è la figura cardine della cupola, il quale con annunciazione e presunte rivelazioni, opera in maniera che la gente si identifichi nel sistema socio-economico, politico-religioso; quello stesso sistema voluto e realizzato colpevolmente dalla classe d’élite per governare in modo totalitario le grandi masse. È così che le religioni sono riuscite a rendere i popoli inabili ad una propria forma di pensiero razionale, autonomo ed incondizionato, al solo scopo di addomesticarli ed indurli ad agire secondo le regole e i dogmi prestabiliti. Quegli stessi dogmi creati dal clero sotto le mentite spoglie del divino, per alimentare nei sudditi il senso di colpa per i propri peccati, e la consuetudine al perdono per quelli altrui. Il perdono è l’arma ideologica, intesa come ricatto psicologico, di cui la Chiesa si serve

The place looked decrepit and abandoned. Foot paths linked the two or three scattered buildings enveloped in thick foliage. Yet this was to be the initial home of the new National Missionary Seminary and Society of St Paul that had recently been founded by the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria. Faced with this reality he confronted several choices. He could go back to his Cathedral parish in Uyo and ask the bishops to look for someone else. He could have requested the bishops to postpone the resumption date until they had a ready-made and suitable place. Rather, he chose to remain. This one decision made all the difference. Dilapidated buildings 1980 - 1991 (d. 2009) were fixed, bushes were cut. The place was made habitable to receive the first set of students that came in a few weeks later. Monsignor Godwin Akpan was not undaunted by challenges. Like all true pioneers he braved the odds and slew the dragons. This iconic priest and servant of God passed away recently and will be remembered for many things. Great men are often celebrated for the tangibility of their achievements. These are often the physical structures they built or the institutions they helped to nurture and mentor.

However, while looking to the future, we enthusiastically continue the work in our current ministries. We remain faithful to our sponsored schools, St. Agnes Academy, St. Pius X High School, and San Vicente de Paul Bethania in Guatemala, and continue to partner with others to address and to end human trafficking, racism, and the death penalty. We continue to study, pray, and preach through advocacy on the immigration crisis and the treatment of migrants, their children, and families. We embrace the words of Pope Francis to pray for the heart that will welcome immigrants. In October, Jose Enriquez, Laura Henderson and I attended the national conference of the Resource Center for Religious Institutes. The opening session focused on the dignity and treatment of immigrants as is instilled in us by our faith. The opening prayer enumerated the many times the bible (in Genesis, Deuteronomy, Leviticus, Job, Psalm 146, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Zechariah, Acts, Romans, Colossians, Hebrews, Matthew, Luke, and John) commands welcoming the stranger, the refugee, the widow and orphan, and the poor with love, justice, kindness, and mercy. In her keynote address, Sr. Norma Pimental, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, spoke about her work with immigrants and refugees at the Texas-Mexico border. She encouraged us to perform ordinary works with extraordinary love for this vulnerable population and to create a culture of encuentro by reaching out and fostering dialogue and friendship with people who are neglected and ignored by the wider world.

We make this appeal guided by our belief that achieving affordable and accessible health care coverage for all stems from God’s precepts about the fundamental right to life and dignity. Your own personal commitments to the protection of life reflect those values, but we remind you that our faith recognizes that life is sacred from conception to natural death. Our commitment to care and compassion for the individual extends along that lifespan. Integral to the right of life for every human is the right to basic health care. As you know, the federal government has offered to subsidize the cost Medicaid expansion for three years, then gradually diminish that subsidy in subsequent years. By rejecting that offer, the state has rejected some $100 billion of federal funds—essentially returning the very tax dollars we Texans send to Washington—over 10 years to specifically care for the working poor. Instead, Texas has placed its hopes on renewing the uncompensated care pool under the waiver, which since 2011 has provided nearly $4 billion annually to “safety-net” hospitals to continue supplemental payments to hospitals for providing uncompensated care while transitioning the state’s Medicaid program to managed care.
