By Dave Lewis MSGR. DANIEL SCHEEL HOME ASSOCIATION

Knight of the Month - May Board of Directors Randy Schleisman President Richard Carter (Cindy) 713-253-8432 Randy has been a quiet supporter of Council [email protected] 8482 working in the background to support our Council programs. When a call goes out for help with an event or Vice-President program Randy is always ready to do what he can. When Bill Vacek (Mary) the Home Association replaced the tile in the hall kitchen, 713-259-8266 Randy volunteered equipment and personnel to remove the old vinyl tile and [email protected] waterproof the concrete surface in preparation for the new vinyl floor. This saved the Home Association a significant amount of cost for the tile replacement Secretary and time if the job was done by the Council members. Having seen the final Larry Hildebrand (Pat) product I can say that he did a superior job compared to what we would have 713-294-3092 gotten from others. Recently he stepped up again by loaning an industrial power [email protected] washer to clean the parking lot and painting the driveway. Treasurer Randy is a regular EMHC at 7:30 am Mass. On those occasions when John Adams (Pam) he is not an EMHC he will help as an Usher. He is an active member in the 281-435-5434 ACTS committee (personal note: He was my prayer partner when I attended my [email protected] ACTS Retreat in 2015). He helps with That Man is You and often contributes material at TMIY meetings to help with our prayer and religious life. He is a contributor to Warrior in the Mankind Project since 2006. Thank you Randy Year 2019 for all you do for the Council. Richard Carter (Cindy) 713-253-8432 [email protected]

Richard has served as an usher and Captain at [email protected] the 12:45 pm Mass. Knight of the Year - 2019 Jim McBane

Brother Jim McBane has helped significantly before becoming the Community Director in 2018. At his first meeting Jim made it known that he wanted the Council to do more in the way of programs at Happy July Birthday Prince of Peace such as dances and programs centered at POP. True to his word, Council 8482 held a special Fellowship Sonday in Advent in Joe Delahanty 7-1 December 2018 with the POP Vocations Ministry, CDA, and Spanish James Martinez 7-2 community to raise funds to support Vocations. This successful event ended with giving Dave Wimberly 7-2 Christmas gift cards at to all our seminarians. Jim also worked hard to fill all the committee Vincente Cardoza 7-3 chairman for the many programs Council 8482 offers. Bill Sanchez 7-3 Jim followed up this success by asking the Catholic Daughters of America to help Michael Stumps 7-3 us by offering two fantastic Mardi Gras Dance and a New Year’s Eve Dance which received Francis Debelo 7-4 great reviews. Jim, working with his CDA co-chair and committee, Jim, formed a great Eddie Grape 7-5 organization to put on this event. The event budget tracking and summary is an example for Jim Lubenow 7-5 us all how to present financial results from an event. Robert McBride 7-5 Jim accepted the Program Director’s position in my second term and continued Joe Bonafede 7-7 Tim O’Malley’s monthly director’s meetings. His leadership helped the Faith, Community, Raul De Guzman 7-7 Family, and Pro-life Directors be more effective in their responsibilities. He also became the De La Rosa 7-7 go-to guy when Father Gerald wanted something brought to the Knights. Whenever Fa- ther Gerald suggested something for the Knights to consider, Jim made sure he got as Dave Kreiner 7-7 much information as possible before bringing it to the OD&T meeting. David Krolczyk 7-7 Jim somehow found time to be active in Prince of Peace ministries. He is a Lector, Sammy Sedita 7-7 EMHC, and Instituted Acolyte. If you need to find Jim on Sunday, just check in the church. Frank Ferraro 7-8 He is a member of the Pastoral Council. He is a Certified Spiritual Director and Coordinator Eric Flores 7-8 for spiritual directors at POP. He has taught adult confirmation classes, chairman of Gala Smitty Schmidt 7-8 Golf committee, and Worship Representative. Stew Sappington 7-11 Jim is a living example of what Father McGivney hoped we would all become; Richard De Los Santos 7-12 charitable, committed to the , and to his Brother Knights. A PEAYER FOR PROTECTION IN TIME OF PANDEMIC

O Mary, you always brighten our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the Cross, took part in Jesus’ pain while remaining steadfast in faith. O loving Mother, you know what we need, and we are confident you will provide for us as at Cana in Galilee. Intercede for us with your Son Jesus, the Divine Physician, for those who have fallen ill, for those who are vulnerable, and for those who have died. Intercede also for those charged with protecting the health and safety of others and for those who are tending to the sick and seeking a cure. Help us, O Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who took upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows, so as to lead us, through the Cross, to the glory of the Resurrection. Amen.

Under thy protection we seek refuge, O Holy Mother of God. In our needs, despise not our petitions, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Insurance Message by Kevin Anglin The world is slowly beginning its return to the way things were - at least as much as it can. It’ll likely be months before we know what normal looks like now. You’ve probably heard the saying attributed to an unsavory (to say the least!) historical figure that “there are decades where nothing happens, and there are weeks where decades happens.” It certainly feels that way now. We have crammed decades of changes into these last sev- eral weeks, and it’s hard to know what is permanent and what will prove temporary. Not everything is fluid though. I am struck by the resilience of the permanent things - our faith, our fraternity, our families. I’m sure you’ve seen the tremendous ways in which the Knights of Columbus in particular has proven itself equal yet again to this current challenge. Whether it was the establishment of the Leave No Neighbor Behind Initiative, or the launch of the diocesan loan fund, or just the everyday local response of councils across the globe, we have responded as we always do, swiftly and powerfully. Sure we’ve had to cancel some things. We’ve had to have some virtual meetings. We’ve had to stay a safe distance apart. But our distance hasn’t diminished our unity, nor has it changed our impact. I continue to be proud to be a part of this great organization - especially in moments like this. And I know you are too. That’s why. for me, being financially committed to the Knights is such a point of pride. We all need life insurance. We all need to plan for retirement. We all need to think about and prepare for life’s what-ifs. When it comes time to decide who to make those preparations with, and who to choose to buy those products from, we can choose to spend our money with the company who establishes a multi-million dollar loan funds for Catholic dioceses in their most desperate time of need, or we can go another route. We can choose to buy our insurance from a company who leaves no neighbor behind, or a company who has no real concept of who their neighbor is. We can prepare for our retirement with a company whose members are - once again - setting an example of true Christian charity for all to follow, or we can go in a different direction. I would challenge you, whether you’ve never inquired or if it’s been a long time, to take a fresh look at the Knights of Columbus as a trusted financial partner, and see what products and services we may have that might help you and your family. As we all start to get back to things, I can talk with you and we can have stress-free, no-commitment conversation about the possibilities. It’s a way to further your commitment to all that we stand for, and - at the same time - obtain some much needed peace of mind in times like these. I hope we’ll chat soon. Vivat Jesus! Around the Hall By Richard Carter

When is the last time you have visited the Zaka Road Family Center? A lot has been done over the last year to make the hall more appealing. The old K of C sign at the road was starting to rot and was in need of replacement. The new neighbors, Texan Flooring, paid for the new sign as part of an agreement allowing them to be able to use part of the driveway in the future. The sign reflects the new name of the hall – Zaka Road Family Center. This was done to satisfy a directive from Supreme to take out all references to the Hall as being the property of the Knights of Columbus. We did have the phrase “Knights of Columbus Council 8482 meets here” added at the bottom. We will be using the sign to welcome the guest of honor or organization renting the Hall. Also Texan Flooring gave us a huge discount on installing new commercial kitchen tile as well as strip- ping the old wax off the rest of the tile and applying five coats of floor polish. As part of the upgrade, the Home Association made repairs to the kitchen walls and cabinets and repainted the kitchen. The results were impressive as you can see in the photos below. Prior to the tile installation, Brother Knight Randy Schleis- man supplied the labor and equipment to remove the old damaged kitchen tile. A big thank you goes out to Randy for saving us a lot of time and money. The Home Association is finishing the upgrades to the bath- rooms. New toilets, sinks, and countertops have been installed in both bathrooms. In the ladies bathroom we repainted the walls to a more neutral color and the dividers are being repainted to get rid of the old pink color. The old fluorescent light fixtures have also been changed to a more modern LED design.

Court of the Holy Family #2597 Officers

LADIES: Please join us for Spiritual Growth and Education! Chaplain As we begin our summer break and take a look back at our accomplishments Deacon Tim Hartnett (Ellen) over the past year, there is no question that Court of the Holy Family #2597 has had 713-446-5349 many successes – this, in spite of restrictions placed upon us due to the Coronavirus. [email protected]

In October a group of our members worked all day at the Mercy Ministry Golf Regent Tournament checking in participants, selling raffle tickets, setting up the prize displays Diana Walker (Hank) and doing anything else that needed to be done to make this event run smoothly. The 832-585-3241 Mercy Ministry provides assistance to the least of us in our community, and it is our [email protected] privilege to support their work. For Halloween, we joined forces with the Knights to hold the first Trunk or Treat event at our Parish. As we were setting up, we were hit Vice-Regent with a blast of icy wind, so we moved inside our St. Andrew Discipleship Center and Kim Morrow served hot dogs and sodas (free of charge) to the families who attended. Instead of 281-686-5164 [email protected] decorating our car trunks, we made the switch to decorating tables with themes like Crazy Cat Lady and Day of the Dead. We were even visited by some very large dino- Recording Secretary saurs to the delight of the children. Parents expressed their approval with having it in- Alice Wimberly side – away from cars in the parking lots as well as offering a respite from the chill out- 832-275-2829 side. [email protected]

In December, we provided for two families in our Parish Christmas Adopt-a- Financial Secretary Family program making sure there were gifts and groceries for both the children and Stella Brooks (Dan) the adults. We gathered for an awesome Christmas party with a delicious catered din- 713-628-6293 ner, gift exchange, and fun games. [email protected]

In January we held our annual St. Gianna’s Hope Memorial Mass for Infant Treasurer Loss. Father Ryan celebrated Mass and honored those children lost to miscarriage Bessie Dycus and early death. Each family was given a candle for each child. Following Mass, eve- 281-216-3446 ryone was invited to our Community Center for cookies, coffee and hot chocolate [email protected] where the decorated tables contained angel ornaments which were given to the fami- lies. The families tell us this Mass and reception provides so much healing. District Deputy Christine Maniscalco A group of our members cooked and served dinner at six of our Parish Alpha 713-515-6342 program sessions where those inquiring about our faith come together to ask questions [email protected] and learn more about our Church. We joined together with our Knights of Columbus to hold two very successful events: a New Year’s Eve party and dance as well as a Mardi Gras Dinner Dance (attended by our District Deputy who declared it was a really fun party). These events are important to us as they help fund our charitable donations and scholarship awards. Our members baked and served desserts at the Knights of Columbus Friday Fish Fry’s, and we did this until the Coronavirus interrupted Lent this year. We held our second scholarship program and awarded two $500 scholarships. Congratulations to Claudia Roux, granddaughter of CDA member Anna Gillian who was awarded the St. Gianna’s Hope Scholarship in Memory of Mary Clare Regitz and Allison Dycus, granddaughter of CDA member Bessie Dycus who was awarded the St. Gianna’s Hope Scholar- ship in Memory of Katherine Karol Wilson. Although it does seem that the Coronavirus has had a pretty negative impact on our activities, one of our members, Darlene Dichero, organized a group to sew face masks and distribute them to a number of locations as part of a larger net- work. Our own Court has 10 members cutting, sewing, procuring and distributing fabric, picking up completed masks and delivering to the network contact, completing more than 2,000 masks. It is worth noting that we have continued meeting – virtually – throughout this pandemic with dial-in meetings in March, April and May. We have not let this stop us from praying, conducting our business, and including some social inter- action. If these activities sound like something where you could be involved, we would love to have you join us. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 16th at 6:45 PM. We will determine whether the meeting will be virtual or face-to- face (or both) as we get closer to the date.
