Another name for the Vatican, and perhaps a better one, is the Holy See. The word see comes from the Latin sancta sedes meaning “holy chair”. By referring to a see, we are speaking of the seat or center of the office and authority of a Bishop.

The Holy See is thus the seat and center of the Supreme Pontiff and Bishop of Rome, our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI. The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is the see of Daniel N. Cardinal DiNardo.

The USCCB is the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, a governing body made up of all American bishops who typically meet biennially in Washington, DC. The USCCB (as do all nations’ conferences of bishops) works closely with the Holy See for the salvation and care of the souls of the world’s Catholic faithful.

A few years ago, our former Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza was elected president of the USCCB for one term. Today, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo chairs the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities.

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (2002) is the core document that guides and regularizes Catholic worship all over the world. It is the supporting document to the SACRAMENTARY (Roman Missal) which you know as the large red prayer book (with tabs and ribbons) used at our altar in every eucharistic celebration.

The Holy See, the USCCB and the General Instruction of the Roman Missal direct all the Catholic faithful in the United States to make a most profound and wonderful act of reverence before receiving the eucharistic Body and Blood of Christ. Here is your relevant excerpt from the General Instruction:

WHEN RECEIVING Holy Communion standing, the communicant bows his or her head before the sacrament as a gesture of reverence and receives the Body of the Lord from the minister.

THE CONSECRATED host may be received either on the tongue or in the hand at the discretion of each communicant. When Holy Communion is received under both kinds, the sign of reverence is also made before receiving the Precious Blood.

When the ordinary (presbyter) or extraordinary (laity) ministers say, “The Body of Christ” or “The Blood of Christ”, the faith should respond by saying “Amen”. This is a sign that you give your assent to the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

These acts of reverence are binding on all Catholics who receive Holy Communion regardless of their ages. (Note that the ges- ture obliges us to make a bow of the head not merely a tip or nod of the head as one does on the street.)

Together in song, prayer and adoration, we reverence the Body and Blood of the Lord before the assembled community of faith precisely that “the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly…(that) your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”. [1Thess 5:23]

Mothers and fathers, though your little children have not yet made their first communion, teach them the habit of making this beautiful and gracious gesture of respect before the eucharistic King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Our good God strengthens you according to the Gospel to bring about the obedience of faith. With confidence, therefore, I ask Christ to bless you and magnify within the virtue of faith that you may know the grace-filled life to which he has called you. Sincerely in the hearts of Jesus and Mary. Your pastor, Reverend Richard Barker. MISSION STATEMENT Liturgical Schedule
