Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 2 Preface

Dear students,

Before you lies the handbook for the Classical Music Department for the academic year 2017-18. With this we hope to provide you a good overview of all the facilities and projects that Codarts has to offer, but also of the sometimes complex rules within the institute and educational system. This is the second year we have written a handbook for you. We will do our utmost to keep improving this handbook during the coming years, and we ask you for your help in this process. If you feel that certain matters are missing from the handbook or have been incorrectly mentioned, please notify us by sending your suggestions to [email protected]. Together we will improve communication.

In this handbook you can find practical information and important dates, as well as rules and regulations. Every Classical Music student on the Bachelor course is expected to be aware of the information inside this handbook. Please note: this handbook is an extra guidance tool, not an official, legally binding document. Documents which can be found on the intranet (such as the study guide) are always definitive.

We will do our very best to prepare you as well as we can for a great and beautiful career. This means we will always try to keep you informed about the possibilities that Codarts has to offer. In return we expect a professional attitude from you towards the obligations you will come across during your studies at Codarts.

We hope you will always come and find us if you wish to talk about your study, in Chapter 2.2 you can read how to find us and where. We are always open to your ideas and willing to improve. If you wish to take action yourself in improving our department, you can join the student panel. This is a great opportunity to stand up for the wishes and needs of your fellow students and really make a change.

On behalf of all the teachers and staff of the Classical Music Department, we wish you all a fantastic time at Codarts.

Best regards,

Team Classical Music

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 3 1 / Introduction

1.1 Code of Conduct At Codarts all rules of conduct are written in the document ‘Code of conduct’, which you can find on the intranet (http://intranet.codarts.nl/nl/bestuur/Paginas/regelingen.aspx). The Codarts core values are respect, responsibility, professionalism and trust. The code applies for all students, teachers and staff.

Within the Classical Music Department we treat each other with respect in all forms of communication. As your education is preparing you for a career in the professional music world, you are expected to have a professional attitude towards your study, the school and all your colleagues. 1.2 Study guide On the intranet you can find the Codarts study guide; this is a guide created for Codarts students from all of the music departments, containing information on the degree and credit structure of the Bachelor degree. http://intranet.codarts.nl/en/student/Pages/studiegids.aspx 1.3 Modules

For each instrument there will be a module description available for the whole study year 2017-2018. A module can be a single course, a part of a course or a cluster of courses that form a unity in itself. Each module ends with an examination. In the module descriptions you will find information about: schedules, purpose and content of the course, responsible teachers, examination structure, number of study points, and any other needed information. A link to these modules will be send to you by email.

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 4 2 / Practical information 2.1 Communication E-mail Most of the internal communication happens through email. Every student is obliged to use their Codarts mail and to check it regularly. If students experience any problems with their Codarts email account, they can go directly to STIP (Student/Teacher Information Point) on the fifth floor. It is the responsibility of the student to be contactable and to stay informed.

Facebook There is a Facebook group for the Classical Music Department. It is recommended that you join this group, as this is the place to share news, facts, calls for auditions, lost and found items, concert flyers, etc.. Search on Facebook for the group ‘Codarts Classical Music’ and become a member! However, Facebook is not an official communication medium for educational purposes. All messages considering scheduling, orchestra projects and other agreements always need to be sent by email.

Posters and flyers There are multiple message boards in the Kruisplein building, which can be used to hang posters, flyers, etc. Students are free to make use of these message boards; they can go to STIP to ask for the precise locations of the boards.

Intranet Students can find all necessary practical information, student matters (module descriptions and exam procedures), fee forms, IT business, opening hours, etc. on the intranet (http://codarts.intranet.nl)

Codarts agency Through the Codarts Agency students can be recruited for events. The requests can be very different, with the wide scope of art/music as a starting point: classical music, musical or gig theatre, pop, jazz, world music, circus and dance. To register your interest and for more information contact Monica van Steen or Ivana Kovac, contactable via [email protected]

Instrument loan Students who want to borrow an instrument from Codarts need to email a request to STIP, or go directly to STIP on the fifth floor. If possible they will lend the student the requested instrument, under certain conditions.

Equipment Loan Students who want to borrow AV/IB equipment from Codarts need to email a request to STIP, or go directly to STIP on the fifth floor. If available, the student will get the requested AV-IB equipment, under the following (certain) conditions:

CONDITIONS ● Codarts has the right to deny any request without giving any reason at all times. ● All AV/IB equipment is supplied in correct working order. Upon return of each loan, the borrower is obliged to report any defects so instruments or equipment can be repaired or revised. ● AV/IB equipment will be returned on the date mentioned below. If you need to prolong your loan you need to contact STIP(Lite) two days in advance. ● AV/IB equipment cannot be lent/rented out to or switched with others, the applicant has the final responsibility at all times. ● Requests must be made two days in advance, to ensure that there is enough time to take all

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 5 necessary information into consideration. ● The applicant is obliged to transport AV/IB equipment in a safe and responsible way. ● The applicant has to fill in a registration form.

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 8 2.3 International office The international office can be contacted by emailing [email protected].

The International Office at Codarts is the place where international students can - get information and arrange the necessary travel documents for entering the , - arrange the residence permit for settling in the Netherlands as a student at Codarts, - get information and assistance (if necessary) about extending their current residence permit, - get advice about opening a Dutch bank account, - get advice about registering at the City Hall (GBA), - and where all Codarts students can get information about study exchange possibilities: Erasmus (in European countries) and overseas exchanges.

For these topics students can also consult: http://www.codarts.nl/practical-information-immigration-procedures/

Registering at the city hall/getting a BSN Every person in the Netherlands has a personal registration number. It is called the Citizen Service Number ('Burgerservicenummer' or BSN). If you were not born in the Netherlands, you must apply for the number yourself by registering at the city hall. Registering is compulsory and if you do not you will get a fine!

Without a BSN you won’t be able to do many important things like having a dutch bank account, dutch health insurance, a personal ov-chipkaart (the dutch public transport card), getting an eligible subsidy, getting a job, etc.

Therefore It is very important that you register your address as soon as you have your housing contract. You will need to make an appointment to register. Call the City Hall and ask for an appointment for "registration from abroad" (inschrijven vanuit het buitenland) or make an appointment online at the following website: www.rotterdam.nl/loket/registratie-niet-ingezetenen/

You will receive confirmation by post or email which will also list the documents you need to bring with you

The necessary documents include: › Your valid passport or ID card (not a driving license) › Your residence permit in case you come from a non EU country (if applicable, either a sticker in your passport, a plastic ID card or letter from IND) › Your rental contract

At the start of the year (September/October) Codarts organises a group appointment with the City Hall for registering your address. This can make the process much easier and less scary than doing it all on your own. It can also be quicker, as at the start of the year there can be long wait times to make an appointment at the City Hall yourself. For more information, check your Codarts emails or ask at STIP.

Official mail When you register at the Rotterdam City Hall (Gemeente Rotterdam), you are officially a resident of Rotterdam (and The Netherlands)!

The government will occasionally send you mail. It is very important you read/understand what they say! You can use Google Translate, or even better, a Dutch friend or colleague to help you understand what the letters are about. There are two main types of letters you will get, sent by the Municipality of Rotterdam, and by Belastingdienst (the Dutch tax office).

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 9

Municipality of Rotterdam (Gemeente Rotterdam) These letters are about your duties as a resident of Rotterdam. Most of the time it is just a yearly tax bill. This is where you (or your house/apartment) have to pay tax for the rubbish disposal, the water use, among other things. Check with your landlord to see whether you have to pay this, or they do. If your rent is ‘all inclusief’ then your landlord should pay, and you should show the letter to them.

If you have been naughty (riding your bike on the footpath in front of the wrong person) and receive a fine, the Gemeente will send it to you in the mail.

Sometimes the person who lived in your room before you does not register their new living address. As there are strict rules concerning how many people can live in a certain type of building, the Gemeente may send inspectors to check your contract and who else is living in your apartment. As long as you registered where you live (strongly recommended) you have nothing to worry about. Just make sure you are at home at the time of their visit. They will tell you the time in a letter, which will be sent a week before they come.

For more information check the the english website of Rotterdam City Hall https://www.rotterdam.nl/english/

Belastingdienst Belastingdienst is an important part of living in the Netherlands. They do not just work with income tax, but also subsidies which you could be eligible for! Housing allowance and health insurance subsidies are just examples. The following link sends you to the english version of the official dutch Tax Office website where you can find a lot of information about taxes, subsidies, social security, etc. https://www.belastingdienst.nl/wps/wcm/connect/bldcontenten/belastingdienst/individuals/

Unfortunately, a big part of the information is still just in dutch, so keep your Dutch friends close!

Letters from Belastingdienst can ask you to declare your income, do your tax returns, provide proof for subsidies, or officially acknowledge a change in your situation or a request made by you. Soon after your registration, you may receive a form to fill in, to inform them about a car you brought with you when you came here. While it is a lot of paper, if you did not bring a car with you, it is a simple matter of ticking the right boxes, signing and sending the letter back.

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 10 3/ Curriculum 3.1 Curriculum The Classical Music Bachelor follows the Bachelor of Music curriculum. Every study year the “Onderwijs- en Examenreglement”(OER) or “Education – and Examination Regulations” is established by the Executive Board of Codarts. Within the OER, curriculum charts display the obligatory modules for every classical music student (except for those who have been granted exemption), divided by study year. The charts also show the number of contact hours (teaching hours) and the number of obtainable credit points for each module.

Some modules consist of multiple (smaller) separate modules. An example is the module ‘‘Ensemble Playing’ for orchestral instrumentalists, which consists of three modules: ‘First Year Choir’, ‘Chamber Music’ and ‘Orchestral Playing’. For more information, please consult the module descriptions on the intranet as well as the Codarts Music study guide (mentioned earlier, see section 1.3). If you have questions about the curriculum and examinations, you can contact your Study Coach. You can also find the detailed curriculum programme for each instrument at the back of this book.

3.2 Minors The full-time Bachelor programme of Codarts is built up as a major-minor structure. The major is the core of the programme, the minors offer an optional programme in year 3 and 4 of your studies. With the minors you can create your own profile, you can broaden your professional perspectives or specialize.

Students from Codarts Rotterdam and the Royal Conservatoire The Hague can choose from the elective courses and minors offered by both institutes.

In the second semester you will receive an invitation to register (via a link) for the minors you want to take next year. Second years sign up for their third year minors, and third years for their minors in their fourth year.

All information about the minors is on the intranet.

In the Classical Music programme, you are required to have a total of 24 ECTS from minors. The curriculum suggests 6 ECTS in third year and 18 ECTS in fourth year, but it is possible to take more minors in third year, instead of the fourth year.

Your Study Coach (SLB) can help you to choose the right minors for you. For more information, contact Irja Zeper: [email protected]

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 11 4/ Examinations

4.1 Examination types Examinations form part of every module. Codarts Classical Music Department uses five different types of exam: 1. Practical exams 2. Theory exams 3. Thesis evaluation 4. Lecture Recital 5. Education internship evaluation

For every type of examination a definite procedure has been established. This is to ensure validity, reliability and transparency within the evaluation process of each module. Students can request additional feedback from their teachers.

Practical and theory examinations take place during the exam periods. These occur twice a year (end of first semester and end of second semester). The precise dates will be set out in an overview at the beginning of each study year. In the module descriptions you can find the exam criteria as well as the grading system that is being used. This can be marks on a scale from one to ten (with increments of 0.5), or the comment “Voldaan/Niet voldaan” (sufficient/insufficient). In case of the first grading system, a 5.5 means a pass, and anything lower is a fail.

Please inform yourself by reading the module descriptions. Module descriptions can be found on Codarts intranet: https://intranet.codarts.nl/nl/student/Paginas/modulebeschrijvingen.aspx

Practical exam During a practical exam the student plays in front of an exam committee consisting of two, three or more selected members from both inside and outside of Codarts. A carefully assembled and balanced committee of professionals will award grades that are as objective, transparent and reliable as possible within the artistic character of the exam. At every Bachelor final exam an external jury member will be present. The external member is someone from the working field who is not connected to Codarts professionally, who therefore operates as an independent jury member and will provide unbiased feedback. Each jury member evaluates the exam with a grade; the final grade is based on the average of these. The ‘evaluation chart - practical exam’ guide is used for reference during the evaluation process. (see the intranet: http://intranet.codarts.nl/nl/docent/Paginas/toetsing-.aspx) The Chair of the Committee is responsible for ensuring that these regulations are upheld. The Administrative Service Centre (ASC) is responsible for the planning of the exams. ASC is contactable via [email protected].

Theory exam There are two types of theory exam: oral and written exams. For some exams a second examiner is involved to grade objectively (apart from Music History and written tests).

Thesis Evaluation The evaluation of your thesis combines the evaluation of the actual written thesis and your thesis presentation. For both components there are fixed criteria to determine the grade. The final grade is the average of the two marks.

Lecture Recital The lecture-recital is a preparation for the Bachelor’s final examination, focusing on one composition or one movement. The assignment consists of a written part and the actual lecture-recital.. This exam

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 12 includes a practical aspect: for instance performing a piece for instrumentalists or demonstrating conducting for conductors. See the module description for an exhaustive explanation. This exam takes place in January.

Education internship The module ‘Education’ includes an internal internship within Codarts. Every student will have one or more students to teach weekly throughout the year. The minor Education, which is optional, and only open to students who successfully finished the module ‘Education’, includes an external internship outside of the school. Both these internships are evaluated during the final meeting with your supervisor. You will receive the mark ‘sufficient/insufficient’. 3.3 Procedure for final exams Below you will find the procedure for your final exam(s) (Bachelor/Master). As mentioned earlier, the Administrative Service Centre (ASC) is responsible for planning the exams. Every student whose final exam is not scheduled before or in August has to re-enroll.

General for all: ● Codarts does not reimburse any travel costs for an ensemble regardless of if the exam is held internally or externally. ● The duration of a final Bachelor/Master recital should be between 45 and 60 minutes. The Chair of the Exam Committee is authorised to shorten your programme. ● The graduation ceremony will take place in July. Graduating students will receive an invitation via their Codarts email. Graduation date: 4th of July 2018. ● Students who cannot be present at the ceremony need to pick up their diploma at the ASC, as it cannot be sent by post. A prescheduled appointment is recommended (ASC: 010-2171020, [email protected]). ● As well as your diploma, you will receive a diploma supplement with a transcript (a list of the subjects and the international status of the programme you followed). ● All questions relating to the time and jury of your exam must go via ASC as mentioned before.

Orchestral Instruments: ● The ASC provides the exam committee and a pianist along with a location inside Codarts. Extra requirements (like harpsichord, percussion or camera) have to be organised by the student (via STIP). ● If you want to play with an orchestra, add lighting or other extra elements into your final exam, please go to the Classical Production Office. There you can explain what you would like to do and find out what the possibilities are. The Production Office will then be involved but will not be producing your final exam. The Production will make sure that you ask for things on time and, when needed, communicate with the relevant departments when things become ‘difficult’. ● If a student wants to organise their final exam at an external location, he/she must send an email to [email protected] to receive a request form. This form needs to be filled in and sent back to this email address. N.B. In the case of an external location, the student is responsible for expenses like rent, travel expenses of the exam committee and technical equipment. (if you speak to the Production Office 4 months before your exam, a lot can be arranged via production) ● Important! In order for you to get the most out of the Production Office, please come to them at least 6 weeks before your final exam. If you come later than this there is no guarantee that you will receive the help you require. ● For all students (except percussionists), the following repertoire is strongly advised: at least one unaccompanied solo piece, one movement of a concerto and one chamber music piece (preferably with more than two other players). One of the pieces should have been composed after 1950 and not part of the Neo-Classical movement. ● For further questions regarding the logistics of your exam please go to either ASC or the Classical Production Office.

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 13

Piano / Organ: ● The ASC provides the exam committee and location inside Codarts. One of the pieces should have been composed after 1950 and not part of the Neo-Classical movement. ● Organ exams are organised via ASC in strong connection with Erik Zwiep. For further questions on your exam please contact your teacher and head of department.

Composers:

● A special final exam concert/festival will be put together. ● The location will be organised via the production. The exam times will be planned via the head of department along with Production and ASC. ● You will be responsible for the following points as a group: ○ Organising your own players ○ Organising your own rehearsals ○ Making sure all equipment and technical riders are filled in on time for production ○ BEING ACTIVE in the promotion and marketing of the event. ● Codarts will pay for the transport, venue, committee expenses, lighting, sound and relevant technicians needed. Please note there is a maximum budget for this and as a group you will need to delegate how to make this work best with the production leader. ● Codarts will not pay for food, drink, conductors, musicians or their travel expenses. ● The Production Office will be available to you as much as possible in order for you to have a smooth transition to your final exam. ● Further information about your final exams will come in November.

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 14 Conductors: As a conductor you are expected to organise your own exam. This means the following: ● Find the ensemble you need ● Find a location you wish to have the exam. (discuss this with the Production Office) ● Write up a rider with all the things you require for your exam. ● Make an appointment with the Production Office at least 2 months before your exam in order for them to make sure the things you need will be there. ● Codarts will pay for the venue (maximum is given) and the transport of equipment and committee. ● Codarts will not pay musicians or their travel expenses. ● The production office can help organise the percussion. ● For further information or questions, please do come to the Production Office for guidance.

Singers: ● The ASC provides the exam committee and a pianist along with a location inside Codarts. Extra requirements (like harpsichord, percussion or camera) have to be organised by the student (via STIP). ● If you want to play with an orchestra, add lighting or other extra elements into your final exam, please go to the Classical Production Office. Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 15 4/ Study progress and scheduling 4.1 Administrative service centre (ASC) If students have questions regarding their credit points, exam planning, diploma, enrolment, tuition fees or study progress, they can send an email to [email protected]. If students would prefer to talk to someone in person, they can always go to STIP on the fifth floor and make an appointment with one of the ASC staff member.

Credit points OSIRIS is the official exam registration system used at Codarts to administer all credit points. Students can check their credit points via studentosiris.codarts.nl. Every student will receive the username and password to their Codarts email account at the beginning of their study. This username and password is also used to log in to OSIRIS. In OSIRIS, students can follow their study progress, grades, credit points and missing exam results. It can take up to 20 working days before credit points show-up in OSIRIS.

Although we do our utmost to register credit points in OSIRIS as soon as possible, it is possible that a student will still miss credit points in their study progress overview after the given deadline. Students are strongly advised to check their overview regularly and contact the relevant teacher or Irja Zeper (student affairs: ipzeper@codarts) in case of missing credit points.

Exam information Exam information (date, time, room) will be announced to students two weeks before the beginning of the exam period. Requests, problems and changes regarding exam information are managed via the ASC and the management staff of the Classical Music Department. These changes must be communicated in advance. Postponing exams is only possible if the student abides by the postponement regulations. These regulations can be found on the Intranet (https://intranet.codarts.nl/en/student/examinationcommittee/Pages/default.aspx)

Submitting thesis/ lecture recital assignment (Bachelor students only) The Bachelor theses and lecture recital papers must be handed in to STIP. For the Bachelor thesis, three bound hard-copies are required. For the lecture recital, four bound hard-copies must be submitted. Master students can consult the AR (‘Artistic Research’) quick start guide to see the regulations for handing in their Artistic Research paper. https://intranet.codarts.nl/nl/student/master_research/Paginas/Downloads.aspx)

Graduation The graduation procedure is described below; see also Section 3.3, ’Procedure final exams’. The ASC checks which students have passed all obligatory modules of their exam programmes. The credit points that are listed in OSIRIS will be evaluated by the Exam Commission. As written above, it is the student’s own responsibility to check OSIRIS regularly (via studentosiris.codarts.nl), to see if their progress is registered correctly. If the student can graduate, he or she will receive an email with instructions about when and where to collect their diploma. Please note that Codarts is not allowed to send diplomas by post.

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 16 Exemptions and postponement of exams

Due to extra curricular activities Many students are already active in the music world during their studies. These activities sometimes coincide with educational activities. Codarts considers it important that students already build an occupational practice during their studies, thus enabling the student to rely on the Exceptional Examination Regulations in special cases. If you cannot make an exam due to extra curricular activities, contact the subject’s teacher as well as ASC and the Classical Music management staff and follow the postponement regulations mentioned above.

Under special circumstances If you are unable to attend your exam(s) because of an exceptional circumstance (eg. illness, family problems, injury, or other personal reason) either temporarily or long term, this could delay your study programme. You should contact the student counsellor in order to discuss the possibilities. With the student counsellor you will discuss what you can do to minimize the delay as much as possible. By making good arrangements regarding your study, it can be possible to minimize the consequences. In case this is not possible it may be the case that you receive a negative binding study advice.

What is a negative binding study advice? A binding study advice (abbreviated to BSA) is a term used by all universities in Holland. It is basically a recommendation issued by the examination board regarding whether or not a student will be permitted to continue their studies in the degree programme in which they are enrolled. BSA can be either positive or negative. If the advice is positive, students are permitted to continue their study programme. If the advice is negative, the student will not be permitted to continue their study programme at Codarts.

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 18 5/ Student life Student Life is a high quality student support programme and offers information, education, guidance and care in areas relating to performance enhancement, personal development, injury prevention and general wellbeing. Services include:

Student counsellor The student counsellor is the first contact person for students in case of (impending) study delay, studying with a learning disability, financial problems, a study break or premature end of study, and for questions about housing and insurance.

Study coach (SLB) First contact for all matters concerning study progress and your study programme.

Confidential advisors You can contact the confidential advisors at Codarts to share your experiences when you feel like you have been treated in a bad way. This can be related to unwelcome intimacy, bullying, (sexual) intimidation, discrimination, aggression or violence.

International Office The International Office helps international students with their visa applications, opening bank accounts and GBA (City Hall) registration. They also provide information about and coordinate exchange programmes.

Performing Arts Health Centre Performing Arts Health Centre (PAHC) focuses on injury prevention, enhancement of overall (physical, psychological and social) well-being, mental skills and performance enhancement. The PAHC consists of a team of various healthcare specialists who are experienced in working with performing artists, such as physiotherapists, a (sports)dietician, mental coaches and a voice/speech therapist. The PAHC works closely with healthcare specialists in various disciplines in and outside school who are experienced in working with professional musicians and dancers and sport related professionals, providing the best advice and services possible.

The Performing Arts Health Centre offers advice, guidance and education but does not offer treatment. If treatment is necessary, you are referred to our external network of (para)medical practitioners, psychologists and other specialists.

Medical insurance Codarts strongly recommends international students to take out a student insurance policy during their stay in the Netherlands. More information can be found at www.studyinholland.nl/practical-matters/insurance and http://www.codarts.nl/insurance/.

● The company AON offers (health) insurance for international students. ● Be aware that in certain situations it will be compulsory to take out a public healthcare insurance (Dutch: Basisverzekering) e.g. in case of a part-time job or internship. Please cheek this carefully to avoid a fine.* ● Are you in the possession of an EU Health Insurance card? Please realise this only covers for emergencies, you will also need an additional insurance. ● Make sure you arrange an insurance that covers at least the consultations with medical specialists and medical tests such as MRI, scans, X-rays and physiotherapy treatment. But also think about accident and liability insurance. ● Make sure you arrange this before you start your studies at Codarts. If you wait for the

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 19 arrangement until you need medical assistance, insurance companies usually refuse you as a client!

NB: Students who are employed in The Netherlands are obliged to have a Dutch public healthcare insurance. *If you have further questions, then please contact the student counsellor. She is happy to help you. Email: [email protected] In the Netherlands you register with a general practitioner (GP) or home doctor (‘huisarts’). We strongly advise you to register with a GP in the area where you stay during your studies at Codarts as soon as possible. To search for a local doctor, go to the ‘Kies uw huisarts’ website (in Dutch) and enter your postcode.

Please note that: ● You need to make an appointment with your GP before you can visit the consultation hour ● You need a referral note from your GP in order to visit a specialist ● You go directly to the hospital only in case of an emergency

Students can contact Student Life via [email protected]. 5.1 Student panel

The students of the Classical Music Department are represented by a Student Panel, which consists of students from different study years and of different nationalities. Being part of the student panel gives students the opportunity to discuss certain aspects of their studies at Codarts that they feel might need improvement. It is a chance for them to speak their minds, express their concerns and make suggestions for change on behalf of their fellow students. The panel meetings are designed to increase clear communication between students and management, so that both sides remain informed about the progresses within the department. Joining the panel is an excellent way to be more involved and get connected.

The meetings take place several times a year. The Head of the Classical Music Department will be present at all meetings, as well as another Classical Music staff member. Other staff members from other departments can also be invited if this would be relevant to one of the topics (e.g. facilities, scheduling, ASC, etc.).

The panel members should send their topics for the agenda at least three days before the student panel meeting to Sophie Hopman. These topics need to be relevant for group discussion; with a focus on improvement (individual matters cannot be discussed).

Be part of it! Applications for the student panel should be sent by email to [email protected] before the 5th of October.

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 20 5.2 Surveys and Quality Assurance

Codarts wants to know how students feel about their education and the facilities we offer. We always want to learn from student experiences, so we can further improve our teaching curriculum and facilities if and where necessary.

This is why on a regular basis we invite our students to answer various –all digital and completely anonymous- surveys. Every two years (the even ones, so 2018 is next) we participate in the Nationale StudentenEnquête (NSE, or NSS in English which means National Student Survey): a national survey for students of all higher education institutions about curriculum, teachers, scheduling, facilities and so on. We also have our own internal evaluations with EvaSys: twice a year (on average) students get a questionnaire about the semester in general as well as a few modules and the teachers involved. Results of these evaluations are shared with all students and discussed in the student panels. Because it's really very important for Codarts to know how students feel we strongly urge all students to participate in these evaluations: so if you're invited for a survey, please fill it in! 5.3 Study coaches (SLB) Every student is appointed a study coach, who will guide the student throughout their time at Codarts. From the first of October students can find the name of their study coach on the intranet: http://intranet.codarts.nl/en/student-life/Pages/studieloopbaanbegeleider.aspx

Students can ask their study coach for advice regarding their subjects, teachers, study progress and credit points. Every year students will have at least three obligatory meetings with their study coach. During these meetings the study coach advises the students about the decisions he/she needs to make. This advice can be based on study achievements, time management or learning capabilities.

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 21 5.4 Physiotherapy protocol Below you can find the step-by-step protocol for students who are injured or have other physical complaints.

Step 1 Get information You can make an appointment for an intake consult with the internal physiotherapist at one of our three locations: ● Location Kruisplein: 8th floor, 8.28 (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) ● Location Circus department Fenixloods: Veerlaan 19F (Thursday and regularly on Wednesday*) ● Location WMDC: A2.11 (regularly on Wednesday*)

*please check for specific data intranet or ask STIP

Clearly state that it concerns a new injury; this intake consult will take half an hour. Follow-up appointments take 15 minutes. You can make an appointment by: ● Going to STIP at Kruisplein ● Going to the Circus desk at Fenixloods ● Going to STIP Lite at WMDC

Step 2 Intake consult (30 minutes) During this consult, the internal physiotherapist will first ask you some questions and will assess your complaint or injury (what is the complaint, what happened and when, what was the cause of it, etc). Then she will make a diagnosis.

Step 3 Plan The internal physiotherapist will in liaison with you, devise a plan (advice and prognosis) and decide whether: ● You need further treatment with a healthcare professional outside school or ● Support from the internal physiotherapist will do for now ● Tip! Make sure that you have a clear picture of what you CAN and CAN’T do ● Inform your study coach (SLB’er)

Communication is key for a successful recovery. It is your responsibility to inform your study coach and the internal physiotherapist about your injury and rehabilitation plan in order to support you in a quick and effective recovery. To help you in this process, the physiotherapist will state the things you to DO and DON’T do on a Health Card. After each consultation with the internal physiotherapist he/she will write down the status of your injury and your progress and the required next step. Before every single class you need to inform your teacher of your condition and what you are allowed to do and not to do for that class. It is important to keep the teachers informed about the progression and recovery of your injury. You also need to bring this card to every consultation with the internal physiotherapist. In case of first year students, the physiotherapist will (with the student’s permission) also inform the main, relevant teachers and study coach per e-mail to optimise the student’s guidance. As from 2nd study year, students are expected to be responsible for the communication with their teachers. If you are treated by a healthcare professional from the external network, please ask your treating specialist to provide a letter stating their findings, recommendations, rehabilitation plan and date of next appointment on paper. Please provide a copy of this letter to the internal physiotherapist so she is up-to-date as well.

● DO! If your injury affects your study progress or if you can’t participate in classes or any project due to a long recovery period, please communicate this with the student counselor and hand in a medical statement. This is important in case you have to request for postponement of your exams.

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 22 Step 4 Evaluation ● After 5-7 sessions, an evaluation will take place with the internal physiotherapist (also when you are treated by one of the (para)medical specialists from the external network). ● In case of limited progression or when more intensive treatment is necessary, the internal physiotherapist will refer you to a healthcare professional from the external network. ● The internal physiotherapist will liaise with the external network if needed and will monitor the progress of your recovery together with you – all with the intention to ensure a speedy, healthy recovery.

Important: ● The internal physiotherapist will not treat in-house but provides individual advice, support and guidance in: ○ injury prevention ○ physical study-related (overload) complaints ○ recovery after an injury or illness ○ performance enhancement ● You are responsible for your own health and recovery, so be true to yourself, listen to your body and adhere to the advice of the (para)medical specialists involved. Last but not least: keep your study coach updated about your recovery! ● You are responsible for having a good health insurance in place! Please note that for external treatments you need to pay (approximately € 29- €40) which can be reimbursed by your health insurance IF YOU ARE COVERED for physiotherapy treatment. Otherwise you need to pay this yourself. For further queries regarding health insurance please contact the student counsellor ([email protected]).

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 24 5.5 Scholarships

There are multiple possibilities for classical music students to receive financial support. The most important scholarships available are listed below.

Muziekfonds Stringendo This is a Rotterdam-based music fund that supports selected Dutch musicians for three to five years. Musicians have to meet the requirements mentioned on the Stringendo website: www.muziekfondsstringendo.nl. All information regarding the application procedure can also be found on their website.

The Codarts Friends Foundation At the end of every study year the Codarts Friends Foundation awards scholarships to outstanding graduated Codarts students. Apart from these scholarships, the foundation supports individual projects throughout the year. The foundation is reachable via the e-mail address [email protected]

VSBfonds (VSB fund) The VSBfonds has a scholarship for studies or research abroad. With a VSB fund students can continue their studies or research abroad after graduating as a Bachelor student from Codarts. For more information, check https://www.vsbfonds.nl/ or contact the international office: [email protected]. Please note: this fund is only for Dutch students.

Nationaal Muziekinstrumentenfonds (National instrument fund) This fund supports students who need better instruments to improve their studies. Students can apply for the grant after consulting their teacher and the head of the Department. All information can be found on the website: http://www.muziekinstrumentenfonds.nl/.

Innovation fund The intention of the Codarts Innovation Fund is to provide an impulse for educational innovation. Students, teachers and staff (or combinations thereof) can apply for a ‘start-up fund’ to support their own innovative project. These projects can for instance support didactic or methodological innovation within Codarts, focus on talent development within a specific department or aim to improve excellence and the well-being of the Codarts students. More information about the innovation fund, as well as the application forms are available via http://intranet.codarts.nl/en/student/Pages/innovatiefonds.aspx.

Assistance Fund Codarts has a fund set up by its Employees, to assist students with acute and sudden needs. Applications can be sent directly by email to [email protected]. A commission assesses the application in close consultation with the student counsellor and may or may not decide to allocate a lump sum. The commission will also take into account whether the student can qualify for assistance from another pre-existing source. All applications are treated confidentially, and the commission’s decision is final and not up for discussion.

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 25 6/ Chamber music 6.1 Chamber music programme The chamber music programme starts at the beginning of the second semester of the first study year. It is an important part of the curriculum for all orchestral instrumentalists and pianists, continuing until the end of the fourth year. Students are responsible for forming an ensemble (with approval of the chamber music coordinator). The ensemble will be coached by a chamber music teacher. Apart from these chamber music lessons, there are possibilities to gain experience within the working field by auditioning for competitions, for example de Grote Kamermuziekprijs. 6.2 Important Chamber music dates The programme begins every year in October (for first year students it starts in February) and will be concluded with an exam at the end of May/ beginning of June.

At the start of each study year all students receive an email with information about the chamber music programme and enrolment. Timetable: see Chapter 8. General year plan

During the year, chamber music students and ensembles will be selected for special concerts and chamber music events in cooperation with, for example, the International Chamber Music Festival The Hague, ZOOM! Chamber Music Festival of the Ruysdael Quartet and other events.

For information and important dates for Chamber Music competitions and concerts, see Chapter 7.5 Auditions and Competitions.

7/ Projects In this chapter you can find information about projects organised by Codarts, ranging from Orchestral projects to important auditions and departmental projects. 7.1 Orchestral Projects Every year Codarts organises a number of projects of various sizes, exploring different aspects of today’s classical music scene. Students have many opportunities throughout the year to play with the full symphony orchestra under the baton of esteemed conductors, as well as the opportunity to play some of the newest music of today, working in close relation with the composition department. Playing in orchestral projects provides the following: ● A strong affiliation with the orchestral repertoire ● An understanding of what it is to play in a large group ● An understanding of different conducting techniques ● The opportunity to work with a new generation of composers, discovering new playing techniques and new ways of exploring your instrument. ● The chance to play in venues across the Netherlands ● An understanding of orchestral discipline ● The chance to be part of important festivals ● The opportunity to gain incredibly valuable experience in orchestral playing, which can help with job applications in the future.

Orchestral projects are usually for students playing orchestral instruments. However, students of Organ, Vocal studies, Piano etc. may be called upon for projects throughout the year.

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 26 This year’s projects include: ● Shostakovich 5 with Valery Gergiev as part of the Gergiev Festival ● Opus 111 - with new works from the composition department ● Codarts/KC orchestra together with the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, performing works from Brahms, Bartok and Ligeti ● An exciting project for percussion, flute and clarinet, performing Bach’s 5th BRandenburg Concerto ● Opera Lab: a big production of Mozart's Così fan tutte ● Andriessen - de Tijd together with ensemble ● Codarts Symphony Orchestra playing Strauss, Beethoven and a world premiere by Peter Jan Wagemans ● Conductors Week

Every student has the opportunity to enroll for the projects they are interested in. The deadline for filling out the online form is September 17th. These preferences, together with advice provided by the teachers, will be taken into account whilst placing the students into projects and creating the seatings. Students will receive the definite project schedule on October 16th. As soon as students receive the definite schedule, they need to make sure to block the dates. You can find the full schedule for the orchestral projects in Chapter 7.7. 7.2 Project weeks Project weeks happen twice a year, and are different to orchestral projects as they form a compulsory part of the Bachelor curriculum. The Project weeks are in October and March. The Project weeks are for all Bachelor students, and there are no lessons during these weeks. A special programme is created for each project week, bringing the entire department together in a multitude of projects and discussions.

Below is a small overview of the Project weeks for the year 2017/18.

Project Week One (PW1) During the first project week, all students will work within their own faculty (separate instrument groups/singers/composers/conductors). At the end of the week a presentation of selected works will be made.

Project Week Two (PW2) Project Week Two will be a full week of project based activities. The projects are a crossover between all the departments of Codarts, so that students can explore the Performing Arts outside their normal bubble. Below are some examples: Codarts Pop Orchestra Contemporary Big Band Circus & Jazz Dance and classical music. Developing project tools with Arlon Luijten

7.3 Rules and regulations Every Bachelor student in the Classical Music Department is obliged to participate in the Project weeks. Master students can always participate in the Project weeks if they want to. Bachelor students additionally participate in a maximum of four Orchestral Projects and Master students participate in a maximum of two Orchestral Projects.

In the event of failing the Project Week, you will receive a special assignment that you must complete in order to get the points. The assignment will be directly related to the Project Week. 7.4 Other projects during 2017/18

During the course of the academic year there will be many projects within the individual instrumental departments. Below you can find a small list of some of the departmental projects. Your main subject teacher will let you know if you are part of these projects.

General Classes (part of the curriculum) First Year Choir The First Year Choir is mandatory for all first year students of the Bachelor. Attendance will be noted at every rehearsal. You must attend 80% of the classes. If you attend late you will be marked as absent which will affect your final attendance level.

Orchestral playing (module) The Orchestral Playing modules are mandatory for students studying orchestral instruments or harp as a main subject. These modules are taken in bachelor years 1 and 2, in order to gain experience playing together in a group. We divide the instruments into the following groups: low strings, high strings, woodwinds, brass, harp, and percussion. More information can be found in the Module Guide (https://intranet.codarts.nl/en/student/module/Pages/default.aspx).

Vocal Department Projects Chamber Choir Chamber Choir is part of the programme of the Classical Music Singing Department. Chamber choir will now be project based. From Behind the Score A student-led concert for composition students. Every two months the students of the Composition Department put on a special concert for everyone in Codarts to see what they are working on and to discuss the new works being presented. Composers wishing to take part in the concerts can contact the Production Office.

Trombone project Each year the Composition department teams up with one of the instrument faculties. Composers will be paired with trombone players, where they will work together in making a new solo performance. These new works are then performed in a small concert setting.

Electronics During the year the works that all composers are making during their side subject/or main subject lessons with Rene Uijlenhoet will be given some performance opportunities. The performances will take place in different venues in and out of Codarts.

Students Handbook Classical Music 2017-2018 32 Piano Department Piano Marathon Each year the Piano Department organizes a piano marathon about one specific composer. One piano student after the other performs one or several pieces from the same composer throughout a whole day in the Jurriaanse zaal, one of the best venues in the Netherlands for solo piano performance. This year's marathon will be about Prokofiev and it will take place on 14 October from 11:00 till 14:15 in the Jurriaanse Zaal, de Doelen. Your main subject teacher will let you know about the repertoire assigned to you. The production will contact you during September for some preparation information.

Piano Recitals During the year the Piano Department gives students many opportunities to perform as soloists across the country.

Every year between October and December, auditions take place in over twenty-five European cities. The selection is made by a jury of prominent orchestral musicians who then supervise the orchestra's rehearsals. All musicians between 16 and 27 years of age, with a European citizenship and an advanced level of proficiency, can audition.
