The Geological Society of America’s Explore Hawaiian Volcanoes FIELD EXPERIENCE 27 July - 4 August 2014 Experience the wonders of active volcanism on the Earth’s most accessable and active volcano - Kilauea on the Big Island of Hawaii! This eight-day field trip on the Big Island of Hawaii will expand your knowl- edge in the field of plate tectonics, hot spot volcanism and the geologic features and hazards associated with living on an active volcano. We will discuss volcanic edifices, eruption styles, magma evolution and see various types of lava flows, lava lakes, tree molds and lava trees, fault scarps, rifts, craters and calderas. We will use our observations and new- found knowledge to discuss methods on how to effectively communicate geologic concepts. We will model inquiry in the field. Peiker Introduction to the Hawaiian Islands The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago of eight primary islands and many atolls that extend for 1600 miles in the central Pacific Ocean. The larger and inhabited islands are what we commonly refer to as Hawaii, the 50 th State of the United States of America. The main islands, from east to west, are comprised of the Island of Hawaii (also known as the Big Island), Maui, Kahoolawe, Molokai, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau. Beyond Niihau to the west lie the atolls beginning with Kaula and extending to Kure Atoll in the west. Kure Atoll is the last place on Earth to change days and the last place on Earth to ring in the new year. The islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Hawaii (Big Island) are the most visited and developed with infrastructure equivalent to much of the civilized world. Molokai and Lanai have very limited accommodation options and infrastructure and have far fewer people. All six of these islands offer an abundance of photographic possibilities. Kahoolawe and Niihau are essentially off-limits. Kahoolawe was a Navy bombing range until recent years and has lots of unexploded ordinance. It is possible to go there as part of a restoration mission but one cannot go there as a photo destination. Niihau is reserved for the very few people of 100% Hawaiian origin and cannot be visited for photography if at all. Neither have any infrastructure. Kahoolawe is photographable from a distance from the southern shores of Maui and Niihau can be seen from the southwestern part of Kauai. -

We use δ C to evaluate the contribution of C3 and C4 plants to deep soil organic matter to reconstruct pre-human contact vegetation patterns along a wet to dry climate transect on Kohala Mountain, Hawaii Island. Precontact vegetation assemblages fall into three distinct zones: a wet C3 dominated closed canopy forest where annual rainfall is N2000 mm, a dry C4 dominated grassland with annual rainfall b500 mm, and a broad transition zone between these communities characterized by either C3 trees with higher water-use efficiency than the rainforest trees or C3 trees with a small amount of C4 grasses intermixed. The likelihood of C4 grass understory decreases with increasing rainfall. We show that the total concentration of rock-derived nutrients in the b2-mm soil fraction differs in each of these vegetation zones. -

It was discovered in 1952 following an earthquake swarm. Surveying in 1954 determined it has an elongate shape, which is the meaning of its Hawaiian name. Lō`ihi was mostly forgotten until two earthquake swarms in the 1970’s led to a dredging expedition in 1978, which recovered young lavas. This led to numerous expeditions to investigate the geology, geophysics, and geochemistry of this active volcano. Geophysical monitoring, including a real- time submarine observatory that continuously monitored Lō`ihi’s seismic activity for three months, captured some of the volcano’s earthquake swarms. The 1996 swarm, the largest recorded in Hawai`i, was preceded by at least one eruption and accompanied by the formation of a ~300-m deep pit crater, renewing interest in this submarine volcano. Seismic and petrologic data indicate that magma was stored in a ~8-9 km deep reservoir prior to the 1996 eruption. -

Hilo Bayfront Trails Phase I: Planning Project Area User Survey Project Description: The County of Hawai`i has initiated a planning process for a comprehensive system of connected trails and parks along Hilo Bay. The purpose of the trails is to provide multi-use access as well as recreational and interpretive opportunities in the project area for Hilo residents and visitors. Project Area: As the name communicates, the project area comprises the bayfront of Hilo (see plan below). Stretching from the Wailuku River to Hilo Harbor, the project area embraces downtown Hilo and many public spaces, including the Wailuku riverfront, Mooheau Park, Bayfront Beach Park, Waiolama Canal, Wailoa State Park, Happiness Garden and Isles, Liliuokalani Park, Coconut Island, Reed’s Bay Beach Park, Kuhio Kalanianaole Park, and Baker’s Beach. Many roadways within the project area possess marked bicycle lanes. Use of Survey Results: The information that you provide by completing and returning this user survey will guide the project planning team, led by Helber Hastert & Fee, Planners (HHF) to produce a plan for trails and trail amenities (such as paths, rain shelters, directional and interpretive signage) that will best serve Hilo residents and visitors and that will enhance current popular uses, incorporate strongly desired future uses, and highlight cultural and historical uses of the project area. COMPARATIVE STUDIES ON THE BLACK SAND CONCENTRATES OF SOUTH INDIA BY Dr. E. A. V. ABSTRACT Samples of the littoral and alluvial placer deposits of the black sand concentrates which contain radioactive resistate minerals were collected from various parts of South India and their characters with respect to colour, density and radioactivity were presented. With the aid of a hand magnet and a sensitive Frantz Isodynamic laboratory model Lj magnetic separator, each sample was subdivided into magnetic, paramagnetic and nonmagnetic components. The paramagnetic mineral assemblage was further subdivided into fractions of varying mass magnetic susceptibility. The amounts of these fractions constitute the frequency distribution of mass magnetic susceptibility, expressed in terms of current strength, of the sample whose character is ttien evaluated by means of certain standard statistical parameters. Variation in the characters with respect to grain size was also studied. Fm'ther, it is suggested that the amount of magnetite is an "Index of Maturity" for these residual deposits. THE voluminous black sand concentrates occurring along the East and West coasts of India, in a series of local concentrations, at favourable localities, constitute a thorium asset of world importance. These placer deposits contain the radioactive mineral, monazite, together with the other industrial minerals ilmenite, garnet, rutile, zircon, magnetite and leucoxene in varying proportions. Such placer deposits of radioactive resistate minerals have been reported from many parts of the world (Nininger,1954; United Nations, 1956; Heinrich, 1958). -
