Explore Hawaiian Volcanoes FIELD EXPERIENCE 27 July - 4 August 2014

Experience the wonders of active volcanism on the Earth’s most accessable and active - Kilauea on the Big Island of !

This eight-day field trip on the Big Island of Hawaii will expand your knowl- edge in the field of plate tectonics, hot spot volcanism and the geologic features and hazards associated with living on an active volcano. We will discuss volcanic edifices, eruption styles, magma evolution and see various types of flows, lava lakes, tree molds and lava trees, fault scarps, rifts, craters and calderas.

We will use our observations and new- found knowledge to discuss methods on how to effectively communicate geologic concepts. We will model inquiry in the field.

US Prince does not include$1225 airfares to/from Hilo, HI. Trip ITINERARY* Sunday, July 27 - Participants arrive in Hilo, Hawaii for transfer via van to Kilauea Military Camp. No meals pro- vided. We will go to dinner as a group at Ken’s House of Pancakes (at your own expense)

Monday, July 28 - Overview/logistics, Kilauea Visitor Center, Steaming Bluffs, Sulphur Banks, Kilauea Overlook, HVO, Jaggar Museum, SW Rift, Halema’uma’u Overlook (if open), Keanakako’I overlook, Devastation Trail, Pu’u Pua’i Overlook. ~ 4 miles of hiking on easy trails. BLD.

Tuesday, July 29 - Chain of Craters Road including stops at Lua Manu Crater, Pauahi Crater and others, Mauna Ulu trail to Pu’u Huluhulu, Kealakomo Overlook, Alanui Kahiko, P’u Loa Petroglyphs, Holei Sea Arch, end of Chain of Craters Road. 6 – 7 miles of hiking on easy trails. BLD.

Wednesday, July 30 - Drive north to Waipi’o Valley Overlook. Lapahoehoe Point Park. BL. Akaka Falls. Farmers Market and Hilo exploration. Dinner in Hilo at your own expense.

Thursday, July 31 - Hike the Kilauea Iki Trial from Kilauea Iki Overlook, Thurston Lava Tube, Kau Desert Trail to Mauna Iki. About 8 miles of easy to moderate trails. BLD.

Friday, August 1 - Drive to South Point along the . Discussion at South Point. Hike to the Pa- pakolea/Mahana Bay green beach (lunch, swim). Mauna Loa Road to Mauna Loa Lookout. BL. Dinner at Punalu’u black sand beach. Dinner at your own expense.

Saturday, August 2 - Drive to the Puna District to Lava Tree State Monument, Kumukahi Lighthouse, Ahalanui Hot Spring (lunch, swim), Kalapana, Kaimu black sand beach. Possible lava viewing. BL. Dinner at own expense at Kurtistown.

Sunday, August 3 - Swimming, snorkeling (bring your own gear) at Hoʼokena Beach Park (near Honounau) Bay, Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park. Today’s activities are subject to change so that we have some flex- ibility in your adventure. BL.

Monday, August 4 - Kaumana Cave, Boiling Pots, , Helicopter tours or Hilo exploration. The costs of these options are not included in the trip pack- age. B. Depart for Home.

You will be sharing a room with around 8 others and they may be mixed male/female. • Price does not include flights to and from Hilo, helicopter flights or snorkeling equipment. • Price includes meals listed in the Trip Itinerary. Included meals will be at the military camp. • Be aware that this trip involves some hiking (as noted in the Trip Plan) you should be moderately fit and have no medical condition that precludes you from participating. Be aware that at times we will be in areas with high sulfur content which can trigger asthmatic and other responses. • We will be staying on an active volcano and we will always attempt to provide you the very best opportunities to view volcanic processes on this trip. However, we heed all warnings provided by the local authorities and do not venture out onto active lava flows unless with a guide.
