Automotive Research Library of the Hcfihcfihcfi
AUTOMOTIVE RESEARCH LIBRARY OF THE HCFIHCFIHCFI Major support by the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation Spring 2014 “The Information Place” Volume 16 #2 Auto Design & Coach Building In the past several articles presented through the newsletter, we have explored the historical aspects of many technologies developed within the realm of the automo- bile and its close relatives (the wood-spoke wheel of the horse-drawn carriage, for in- stance), and while technological break- throughs and their origins are both interest- ing and vast in their intricacies and histo- ries, it is the esthetic value of the automo- bile that I will focus on in this issue – the designs and designers of some of history’s most beloved and noteworthy cars in partic- ular. Prior to delving into such fertile sub- ject matter, it should be noted that given the sheer volume of automobile designers and companies, I plan to focus in detail on a precious few of them here. The silver lining is that if you are intrigued by the subject matter to the point of further investigation, the library can certainly pacify your curios- ities, so you can take some comfort in that, right? 1951 Bugatti by Saoutchik Up Coming Events THE GRAND ROUTIERI (FRANCE) A collection of French coachbuilders signs that were ordering bodies from the June 28 Orange County Model T Ford catering to the ultra-rich, the Grand Routie- Routieri included the likes of Bugatti, Club Swap Meet at El Dorado High ri specialized in the elegant and the extrav- Delahaye, and Talbot. Can You Guess the Volkswagen?
When you think of VWs, do you think of the Rometsch, Hebmuller or Tempo Truck? Or are you more likely to think of Beetles and Buses? The lesser-known VWs have made a mark on the automotive world just like their more popular siblings. And like any vehicle, they had certain characteristics that were solely their own, or sometimes revised as the years went on. Mid America Motorworks takes a look at the VWs that have been making a quiet mark on the hobby. Volkswagen Type 4 The Volkswagen Type 4 is a mid-sized car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen of Germany from 1968 to 1974 in two-door and four-door sedan as well as two-door station wagon body styles. The Type 4 evolved through two generations, the 411 (1968–72) and 412 series (1972–74). Over its six year production run, Volkswagen manufactured 367,728 Type 4 models, compared with 210,082 of the subsequent Volkswagen K70 with its four year model life. In the United States, VW sold 117,110 Type 4s from 1971 to July 1974. 411 Type 4 1968 – 1972 • 1969 411 4 Door sedan • The engine was aluminum based, more robust than the magnesium based Bug engine and went on to power the VW Bus until 1982. • 411s were 1700cc and 412s 1800cc. • All models had Macpherson strut front suspension. 1968-1969 they had carbs in the US, followed by fuel injection in later years. The horsepower was raised from 68 to 85 bhp by 1973. 412 Type 4 1972 -1974 • Stationwagen or Variant • Manufactured from 1968-1972 as the 411 and late 1972-1974 as the 412. -

I met Heiko Thum in Germany at the T34 50th Anniversary and instantly knew he was an honest dedicated T34 owner. He even took wedding photos with his T34 … now that’s dedication! We talked at GMH and he asked if it would be possible to create a metal badge for the special 50th Anniversary t-shirt design by John Jaranson. He had a friend that was able to create metal parts with exacting detail and within a couple months had the new 50th Anniversary badges ready. We kept the price reasonable and they sold like crazy. Next I asked if he could reproduce rare metal Random Acts of T34 Dedication T34 parts, and he confirmed that would be possible. -

Front Wheel Drive the Story of Pioneers of the Front Wheel Drive Motorcar
Front Wheel Drive The story of pioneers of the front wheel drive motorcar To most British motorists that think about such things, the Mini, was the beginning of the front wheel drive revolution. The revolutionary concept that was the Mini was it’s packaging. The packing of the engine, gearbox and final drive into a very compact unit, leaving sufficient space in a very small car for four people. The Mini didn’t start the front wheel drive revolution but the packaging revolution that has spread throughout the worlds motor industry. This was made possible because of the developments in front wheel drive technology that had gone on during the previous forty years, but until that time had been almost ignored by the British motor industry. The combination of front wheel drive and efficient packaging has revolutionised the world’s motor industry, being almost universally used, except were considerations of cost and or size are not important. This is the story of those years before the Mini and the pioneers of front wheel drive. From the Carriage to the Horseless Carriage For the thousands of years, from the time of their invention, wheeled vehicles were pulled from the front. This was because it was an inherently stable arrangement, it made steering easier and gave maximum control. This lasted as long as the foot was used to transmit the motive power to the road, but once the wheel was used to transmit the power of an onboard engine to the road the situation changed. This was due to the correct and universal understanding that the front wheels must be used for steering, and as it was so much simpler to drive the none steerable wheels, rear wheel drive became the accepted method used for the pioneer self propelled vehicle. -
