INDIGENOUS 150+ CELEBRATES THE RECLAIMATION OF INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE AT SIMCOE STREET THEATRE ON NOVEMBER 27, 2019

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 7, 2019 -- Coming to the Simcoe Street Theatre for the first time, INDIGENOUS 150+ is a film and conversation series dedicated to putting Indigenous voices centre stage. Now in its’ third season, Indigenous 150+ was started as a response to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. On November 27th, starting at 7 p.m. INDIGENOUS 150+ will screen two episodes from the acclaimed series FUTURE HISTORY, a television series that celebrates the reclamation of Indigenous knowledge and shines a light on individuals around Ontario and elsewhere who are shifting colonial narratives and leading the reclamation of Indigenous knowledge systems, language and identity. Attending the event and participating in a post-screening conversation moderated by Jillian Morris will be the series co-creator, award-winning filmmaker Jennifer Podemski, and Jeff Monagaue. Mr. Monague who is an Ojibwe Elder, former Chief of Beausoliel First Nation and an Ojibwe language and knowledge carrier is featured in the series.

FUTURE HISTORY: Reclaiming Our Past, Harnessing Our Future is now in its second season and is a 13-part television series created for APTN by Jennifer Podemski and archeologist and artist, Kris Nahrgang.

INDIGENOUS 150+ will be presenting a screening of CLUB NATIVE on December 4th 2019, at Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library with award-winning writer/director and creator of the celebrated television hit .

Club Native is a documentary film exploring Mohawk identity, community and tribal blood quantum laws. The film looks at how women in Deer's home community of risk losing their right to live on the reserve, after marrying non-natives. The film traces the roots to the highly discriminatory Indian Act through the controversy of Bill C31 to present day. The film raises a difficult question faced by people of many ethnicities across the world: What roles do bloodline and culture play in determining identity?

About Jennifer Podemski: Jennifer Podemski is a mother, actor and award winning film and television producer. Driven to create space for Indigenous stories and creators, Jennifer founded the first Indigenous owned and operated production company in Canada. As a storyteller in front and behind the lens, she has brought 100’s of hours of landmark television to the screen including Moccasin Flats, APTN’s The Other Side and Empire of Dirt for which she was nominated for two Canadian Screen Awards. About Jeff Monague: Jeff Monague is a member of the Beausoleil First Nation on Christian Island and currently resides in Coldwater Ont. Presently, he is the Manager at Springwater Provincial Park. He has been an instructor of the Ojibwe Language and has taught at every level. From junior kindergarten to post-secondary at Georgian College. He is a former Chief and Councillor of his community on Christian Island and has been the Treaty Research Coordinator for the Anishinaabek Nation and he is also a Canadian Military Veteran.
