SOCIOLOGY, RECREATION, EDUCATION, ECONOMICS, AND RELATED SUBJECTS IN THE GRAND CANYON–LAKE MEAD REGION Anonymous (continued) OVERVIEW. This part lists analytical studies and reports that relate to socio-economic concerns, including visitor appreciation and social “quality of wilderness” studies, and items pertaining to teaching and program instruction about the human and natural history of the Grand Canyon and Colorado River. Because the waters of Lake Mead encroach upon the lower portion of Grand Canyon, for bibliographical convenience this part is expanded to include all items that relate to social and other issues in the Lake Mead region overall. Added here are educational and other materials that thematically embrace the greater Grand Canyon region, the activities of which are not necessarily conducted in the region itself. RELATED MATERIAL PART 2. GENERAL PUBLICATIONS for material that pertains to social, economic, and related affairs in the greater region of the lower Colorado River below Lake Mead, to Mexico PART 3. THE NEW YORK TIMES for additional items that relate to this part of the bibliography PART 15. HEALTH AND SAFETY for issues that pertain to workplace harassment that may otherwise be related to social issues ____________________________________________________________________________________________ THIS PART INCLUDES MATERIAL DATED 2019 THAT WAS AVAILABLE IN DECEMBER 2018–JANUARY 2019 NOTES FOR PART 14 TWO organizations cited throughout Part 14 in particular require a brief background. GRAND CANYON YOUTH is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to serving young people. Its programs allow for the building of self-esteem and responsibility by requiring, before they may accompany a river trip, that they perform community service, design an educational project to be pursued on the river, and earn a portion of the trip price. As noted on their website, “GCY is open to any young person age 12 to 19 years old with a desire to discover the educational power of the river. Participants come from all walks of life and from different cultures, economic backgrounds, and physical abilities.” The organization’s programs have expanded to include other canyon rivers of the West and Southwest. THE WHALE FOUNDATION, a not-for-profit organization. “In loving memory of Curtis ‘Whale’ Hansen, The Whale Foundation provides confidential access to mental and physical health care professionals and a network of support services designed to restore, promote, and celebrate the well-being of the Grand Canyon River Guiding Community.” Its mission has grown to include matters relating to social and personal support, and a scholarship. Accordingly, except for matters that specifically relate to health, all items produced by The Whale Foundation (including its news bulletin, “Back of the Boat”, that is published periodically in Boatman’s Quarterly Review), are listed in Part 14. Anonymously produced items are cited under “The Whale Foundation”, while those items that are signed are cited under the individuals’ names. Health-related items appear in Part 15 of the bibliography. 7436 1535 The Grand Canon 2018 PART 14.
