Huber* Zoological Research Institute and Museum Alexander Koenig, Adenauerallee 160, 53113 Bonn, Germany (Received 7 June 2004; revised 25 November 2004; accepted 29 November 2004) ABSTRACT The renaissance of interest in sexual selection during the last decades has fuelled an extraordinary increase of scientific papers on the subject in spiders. Research has focused both on the process of sexual selection itself, for example on the signals and various modalities involved, and on the patterns, that is the outcome of mate choice and competition depending on certain parameters. Sexual selection has most clearly been demonstrated in cases involving visual and acoustical signals but most spiders are myopic and mute, relying rather on vibrations, chemical and tactile stimuli. This review argues that research has been biased towards modalities that are relatively easily accessible to the human observer. Circumstantial and comparative evidence indicates that sexual selection working via substrate-borne vibrations and tactile as well as chemical stimuli may be common and widespread in spiders. Pattern-oriented research has focused on several phenomena for which spiders offer excellent model objects, like sexual size dimorphism, nuptial feeding, sexual cannibalism, and sperm competition. The accumulating evidence argues for a highly complex set of explanations for seemingly uniform patterns like size dimorphism and sexual cannibalism. Sexual selection appears involved as well as natural selection and mechanisms that are adaptive in other contexts only. Sperm competition has resulted in a plethora of morpho- logical and behavioural adaptations, and simplistic models like those linking reproductive morphology with behaviour and sperm priority patterns in a straightforward way are being replaced by complex models involving an array of parameters. -

When the museums of Lübeck, Stuttgart, Tübingen and partly of Wiesbaden were destroyed during World War II between 1942 and 1945, also all or parts of their type material were destroyed, among them types from spider species described by Embrik Strand bet- ween 1906 and 1917. He did not illustrate type material from 181 species and one subspecies and described them only in an insufficient manner. These species were never recollected during more than 110 years and no additional taxonomically relevant information was published in the arachnological literature. It is impossible to recognize them, so we declare these 181 species here as nomina dubia. Four of these species belong to monotypic genera, two of them to a ditypic genus described by Strand in the context of the mentioned species descriptions. Consequently, without including valid species, the five genera Carteroniella Strand, 1907, Eurypelmella Strand, 1907, Theumella Strand, 1906, Thianella Strand, 1907 and Tmeticides Strand, 1907 are here also declared as nomina dubia. Daarnaast zijn er enkele adventieve soorten gemeld. In deze bijdrage voeren wij nieuwe geïmporteerde soorten op. Eusparassus dufouri is een grote, fraaie spin, afkomstig uit het mediterrane gebied. Het is een nachtactieve soort die door snel te rennen prooien overrompelt. In zowel 2014 als 2016 is een individu in Nederland gevonden en bij de auteurs van dit artikel terecht gekomen. Importen van Micrommata ligurina en Olios argelasius, die beide ook van oorsprong uit het Middellandse Zeegebied komen en eerder al op internet gemeld waren, worden hier ook kort behandeld. During the survey targeted searches for fauna species were conducted with a particular reference for ‘threatened’ and ‘priority’ fauna species and an assessment was made on the type and conservation significance of fauna habitat across the site. -

El-Hennawy 41 El-Manteqa Abstract: El-Rabia St., Heliopolis, Elba protected area is a unique area with a variety of habitats. Its fauna is Cairo 11341 rich with numerous vertebrate and invertebrate species. The arachnids of this Egypt area are here studied for the first time. Specimens of five arachnid orders e-mail: [email protected] were collected during nine trips to different places in the area (June 1994 - November 2000). The collection contains 28 species of 16 families of Order Araneae, 1 species of family Phalangiidae of Order Opiliones, 2 species of family Olpiidae of Order Pseudoscorpiones, 4 species of 3 families of Order Solifugae, and 7 species of family Buthidae of Order Scorpiones. Abstract: In the present study, monthly and seasonal fluctuations of densities of terrestrial spiders were recorded in six different sites at Qena Governorate during the period of one year (February, 2012 - January, 2013). The study revealed the occurrence of 1247 specimens belonging to 14 families and including 23 species of order Araneae. Family Salticidae recorded the highest number during the whole period of study (278 specimens) while family Agelenidae recorded the lowest number in the same period of study (4 specimens). It was observed that the maximal number was collected from Thanatus albini (199 specimens), while Halodromus barbarae was the least species in number since only 2 specimens were collected. The densities of the recorded spiders varied seasonally and the general seasonal peak was recorded during autumn (363 specimens), while the lowest density was observed during winter (215 specimens). Regarding the sex ratio of the collected spiders from all sites, it was clear that there were 213 adult male specimens, whereas the adult females were represented by 440 specimens. -
