BBC MUSIC DAY

On Friday 23rd June we celebrated BBC Music Day across Year 7, 8 and 9 Music Creative Curriculum groups. BBC Music Day is a UK-wide celebration of music that aims to unite communities and generations through their love of music. At Frederick Bremer we created a 120 piece choir and orchestra across the year groups, learning repertoire in one day and performed to an audience at the end to the day. Year 9 taught Year 7 how to play with the assistance of Year 8 pupils. Year 9 pupils found it challenging teaching others, but said they "enjoyed helping and teaching others, meeting new pupils and being the conductor”. Many were able to reflect on the experience they had and how they would develop their teaching style. Overall, it was a fantastic day and pupils responded well, a pupil stated that "it was amazing and I think we should do this more often".

LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ST LUKE’S CONCERT

A selection of high performing musicians from Year 9 were specially selected to perform at Symphony Orchestra St Luke's as part of the Music in 's Trust annual concert. They worked hard over the past few months to learn Mozart's Piano Concerto in F, a challenging piece which demands highly skilled performers and involved some very intense rehearsals. The pupils involved were:

Maya - Piano Soloist Cherie, Sam, Fahar, Alice, Charlotte, Amber, Danny, Frederick, Daniel, Eric, Joshua and Zack . "I am incredibly proud of their hard work, dedication and how professional the final performance was. I had goosebumps from the performance - well done to them all". Miss Buckley The director of music at MiSST who worked with the pupils said: “The pupils were great and you should be proud of how well they represented the school. Maya worked particularly hard learning the whole piece off by heart! Some great things going on at Frederick Bremer!”

MUSIC SUMMER CONCERT

Our final concert of the year which showcased all the handwork of the Year 7,8 and 9 Creative Curriculum pupils. Performances exhibited the range of progress made by pupils this year. This included Year 7 ensembles, solo performances from pupils who have taken their grade exams, our senior ensemble and our combined choir and orchestra. Pupils demonstrated their talent and every concert just gets stronger with their ability. We are incredibly proud of the hard work, motivation and progress of all pupils. We look forward to even more next year!

We are extremely proud of how hard our pupils work and would like to say a very well done all involved!

RADLEY COLLEGE RESIDENTIAL

Fifteen pupils were taken to Radley College for the 3rd year in a row as part of the MiSST programme. The aim of the residency is to improve musical knowledge and skills, form new friendships across the MiSST schools and increase confidence in problem solving and team work. Across the 4 days pupils learnt and prepared 3 pieces for performance as well as participated in social activities and we have year 9 pupils who are mentors and senior members to work with the younger pupils. This is a great opportunity for the selected pupils to spend 4 days in a private college, accessing music education in a workshop style setting. Pupils found the music sessions intense, but have loved the experience of college life and meeting new people.

PROGRESSION WEEK

Two weeks ago was a busy week at Frederick Bremer with our annual Progression Week taking place for our Year 10s. Pupils were offered five different pathways to learn how education and business opportunities inter- sect. Pupils went on to work experiences in London Law firms, specialist garages and charitable organisations. Two groups of pupils experienced a week in the life of apprentices working closely with Network Rail. Alongside those who opted for a work related placement, other pupils had the opportunity to visit Universities, the financial hubs of the city and learn how to apply for sixth forms. Feedback from pupils has been extremely positive and we look forward to pupils applying their learning next year as they apply for College and Sixth Form places.

PROGRESSION WEEK ACTIVITIES

Progression week was designed to help our pupils make informed decisions about their future education and ca- reers beyond Frederick Bremer School. To ensure pupils had a clearer understanding of how sixth form choices link to their future career pathways, our progression week provided opportunities for pupils to engage with top London employers and further/higher educational institutions. Throughout the week pupils were given the opportunity to practice applying for placements, find out about the different opportunities that are available at university, shadow engineers, interact with investment bankers and all had to face a gruelling mock interview. In the city businesses trips, pupils learnt about management progression and hidden job roles. They were taught how investment leads to the building of new companies and actually transforms the face of London. Pupils also learnt how budgeting in their day to day lives prepares them for handling budgets in a larger organisation. Pupils had time to ask questions to find out more about what education pathway business leads in London took to get to the role they have today.

For the work experience pathway we encouraged pupils to have interviews and apply to organisations directly to learn how to apply for formal jobs. Most pupils learnt administrative and support functions in their placement to see how planning and resources change how well a company can operate. They also gained valuable insight into how staff are managed. The apprenticeship pathway pupils visited a Network Rail site to learn the challenges of working in the fields of Engineering and ICT. Pupils were given a full safety briefing and taught how to weld on a practice track and even got a chance to work with an automatic routing system. The ICT apprentices visited Euston House to the Digital Railway offices. They learnt about ICT asset management and how communications systems are rapidly changing with new information technology. We sincerely hope that our Year 10 pupils enjoyed their experiences of Progression Week and that they feel ready to begin to tackle Post 16 applications in Year 11. A special thanks to Mr Palombo, Ms Hart, Senior Leadership, all of Frederick Bremer’s administration, finance, communication and human resources staff, trip leaders, teaching staff, support staff and co-ordinators at the off site venues for your tireless work in ensuring Progression week has been a great success.

MFL NEWS

During the last 6 weeks, Frederick Bremer School has been hosting 7 pupils from Europe. This included 4 Italians, 2 Spaniards and 1 French young man. They adjusted very well and blended into our rich and challenging curriculum, day in, day out their English went crescendo. They also had the opportunity to share their language and their culture with our pupils. This gave our pupils a practical example of the fact that our world was a global village, and we had to build bridges with the outside world by embracing different cultures, rich traditions, religions and languages. In addition, they delivered an amazing presentation in which they drew the similarities and the differences between their schooling systems and ours. However, they stated that they had a special penchant for our system here at Frederick Bremer, there was a certain ‘un je ne sais quoi’. I believe that they were, amongst others, referring to Frederick Bremer’s creative dimension which aims to make our pupils independent, resilient and resourceful life-long learners.

But most importantly, they found our staff approachable, caring and dedicated.

FRENCH TRIP REVIEW

On Wednesday 5th July, 50 Year 9 and 10 pupils, along with 5 members of staff, descended into France for a 4 day sojourn. What followed was one of the most successful trips Bremer has ever seen! We made our way to Folkestone and took the Eurotunnel down to Calais, before driving to Normandy for our first night. Pupils were in great spirits and enjoyed their first night dining in France together, before exploring the local town and admiring the scenery. On Thursday, we drove to Arromanches, site of one of World War Two’s most iconic battles, before viewing a short film at a 360 degree cinema. Pupils were visibly moved by the scenes they were faced with and behaved impeccably, showing due respect. We then visited Mont St Michel, a 1300 year-old monastery, where pupils were able to climb to the very top and being rewarded with some fantastic panoramic views. On Friday, we also climbed Montparnasse Tower and were rewarded with some fantastic views of the French capital, including the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Elysée, Notre-Dame Cathedral and many more. Leaving Montpar- nasse, we stopped off at the famous Palace of Versailles, where pupils were given the opportunity to explore the Palace, taking in its history and decadence for themselves. Saturday saw us visiting The National Stadium of France, the Stade de France for a guided tour. Pupils were grateful for the opportunity to see the site of sporting success, including the changing rooms and the presidential suite! All staff were in concurrence that the pupils conducted themselves incredibly well, showing maturity, responsibility and punctuality at all points of the trip. It was truly a pleasure to see our pupils exploring another famous European country in the way that they did. Roll on next year!

YEAR 9 RELIGIOUS STUDIES GCSE BUDDHISM TRIP

The Year 9 GCSE group have worked exceptionally hard this year to complete a GCSE in one year. I am very proud of their maturity and dedication and we look forward to the results in August. After the exam we studied Buddhism and Judaism, to widen pupils' knowledge of world religions. As part of this work we visited the London Buddhist Centre where pupils were able to talk to a practicing Buddhist and participate in a mediation. All pupils behaved extraordinary well and very much enjoyed their Buddhist experience.

DIVERSITY ROLE MODELS TRAINING

We are very fortunate to be working with the charity ‘Diversity Role Models’ who train teachers and pupils in creating inclusive school environments for LGBT+ plus people. This term all Year 9 and Year 10 participated in workshops on challenging stereotypes and homophobia. As part of the workshops pupils were privileged to hear the life stories from three LGBT role models. Both year groups made fantastic contributions to the workshops and were excellent ambassadors for the school.

GENERAL ELECTION

On Thursday 8th June, whilst the UK was voting in the general election, Frederick Bremer held its own mock election. We had an awesome lead up to the election with each year group hosting a hustings assembly. Each tutor group represented a different political party and they prepared a speech, banners and posters. The pupils votes led to a Labour Landslide victory.

SEX AND RELATIONSHIPS EDUCATION

During progression week Year 10 participated in sex and relationships education workshops on the theme of sexual consent. Pupils learned about the importance of giving and receiving consent and the consequences if consent is not given. It was fantastic seeing our pupils demonstrating such maturity, reflection and excellent discussion skills during these workshops.

PORTRAITURE WORKSHOP AT

Walthamstow is currently celebrating an important time in the town’s history involving ‘The School of Art’ (Now Waltham For- est College) when artists such as Peter Blake, Celia Birtwell and Ian Dury were involved with this famous Art School. The William Morris Gallery is hosting an exhibition called ‘Be Magnifi- cent' and as part of the celebrations our school was given a really great opportunity. We were invited by ‘Create’ to take a few of our pupils to a summer school at Waltham Forest College where they were taught by one of the founding members of the Stuckist Art Movement Eaman Everell who studied at the Walthamstow School of Art in the 60’s. Eamon passed on some really great ideas to help our pupils with their drawing, especially portraiture which was a big help towards the new Year 10 project. Well done to all pupils who took part, did such a great job of listening and putting into practise their newly acquired skills and were a credit to the school.

YEAR 10 VISIT TO SIMMONS & SIMMONS

We had a very successful trip to Simmons & Simmons to introduce the Year 10 Art group to the legal firm’s temporary and permanent Art collection. The curator Jonathan Sharples took us around a selection of pieces which he had specially chosen to show the pupils as they related perfectly with the new Year 11 project ‘Recreation’.

In addition, we had the extra good fortune to meet one of the artists, Trevor Appleson whose discussion and exhibition of photographs ‘Just Be Yourself’ on contemporary youth culture really helped our pupils to understand the scope and possibilities of their new project. The opportunity to hear first-hand information about the artworks and the artists is an invaluable one for which the school is incredibly grateful and fortunate.

The Year 10’s will now complete a summer project based around the new subject and the works they saw on this trip and we are looking forward to seeing their final pieces next term with the view to exhibiting them at Simmons & Simmons in the Autumn.

YEAR 9 TRIP TO ‘BE MAGNIFICENT AT THE WILLIAM MORRIS GALLERY

The Year 9 Art class have impressed the Art department over the past year that we wanted to reward them with a trip to see this exhibition. They have been studying Pop Art recently and looking at the work of Peter Blake who taught Art in the 60’s in Walthamstow. We were very fortunate to get a tour from the Learning and Outreach Manager who was able to tell the group a little about William Morris. In addition, an introduction was given to the temporary exhibition which celebrates The Walthamstow School of Art (now Waltham Forest College) when artists such as Peter Blake, Celia Birtwell and Ian Dury were involved with this famous Art School. In a second stroke of luck, we were in the gallery at the same time as one of the other artists who studied in Walthamstow in the 60’s and had a few pieces of work in the exhibition, as a result, Laurie Lewis very kindly agreed to speak to our pupils about his pieces of work including a self-portrait he did whilst studying in Walthamstow.

E17 ART TRAIL GCSE EXHIBITION

For the first time, the school was very pleased to be able to present the highlight of our Art calendar as part of the E17 Art Trail. As a result, Frederick Bremer GCSE Exhibition was promoted in the E17 Art Trail Guide and at least 15,000 copies of the Guide were distributed across Waltham Forest and North East London.

The event was a real success, along with friends and family of the exhibitors, there were visitors from Simmons & Simmons, Sixth Form Colleges, ex-pupils (who are going on to the London College of Fashion, and Chelsea School of Art), as well as the E17 Art Trail Project Manager, staff members and many others. The visitors were treated to live music from some very talented music pupilss and an impressive display of artwork from all year groups as well as the GCSE work which included painting, sculpture, photoshop and video art as well as a life size wire figure and a giant crow. We also found out that one of the visitors has asked to include a few of our pupils pieces in an exhibition in autumn; we will keep you posted with news of this in September!
