Frederick Bremer News

December 2017

We are now at the end of another successful term at Frederick Bremer School. As you will see from this bumper edition, it has been an incredibly busy term with a huge number of amazing events. Our pupils are living the school vision every day, and we can see them striving to ‘be the best you can be’. We know as a school that we are ambitious to ensure that this vision becomes a reality, and that we become an outstanding provider of community education. Our visitors to the school speak highly of their experiences here, and how courteous and interesting our pupils are. In a recent Challenge Partners visit, our review team stated that it was clear that the school was on an ambitious journey of school improvement and the vision and values of the school were deeply embedded. This is also mirrored in our school results, with achievement and progress above national average and we believe that this is continuing to improve. As a result of recent visits, we have consolidated all of the information about how the school works onto one page and you can see this on our school website and in this newsletter. Well done to all pupils for all of their hard work in recent exams, and Year 11 in particular are working very hard in preparation for their final exams. Pupils need to make sure that they get a good rest and relax over the holiday, and come back to school ready to continue with their hard work. Great things come from perseverance and commitment, so they need to be ready for the next learning challenge in January. When we return from the break, I will be talking to pupils in assembly about how we model our values. In particular, we will be reflecting on the quote from Michelle Obama who stated ‘when they go low, we go high’. In the light of the hostile political environment, and the pressures on our communities at the moment, it is imperative that we all ensure that we strive ‘to be the best we can be’ and do not let others lower our standards. It is also important that we spend time at this time of year reflecting on those less fortunate than us. There are too many in our community who will struggle for shelter, food or warmth at this time of year or whom will be on their own. As a community, we support those in need, so it was heartening to see so much being donated to food banks and money being raised to help children at the end of this term. I hope you all have a wonderful break, and I look forward to seeing you all in 2018. Goodbyes – Sadly we will be saying goodbye to the following members of staff at the end of this term. We thank them for their hard work and wish them all the best of luck for their futures. Antony Frate (Science Teacher), Pallabi Sengupta (Maths Teacher) and Mehjabeen Mohammed (Teaching Assistant) Ms Smith

Simmons & Simmons are a top international legal firm, and every year they support 12 pupils who are chosen for the Young Talent programme. This involves our pupils spending time over the 4 years shadowing within the company and receiving specialist advice and support on work skills, careers advice and UCAS applications. Our pupils also receive mentoring from Simmons & Simmons staff. It was wonderful to see so many ex pupils, and participants from all 6 cohorts. Rebecca Rumble and Stanley Soulsby both spoke about the difference the scheme made to them, and they are both now in their third year at University. Stanley is studying Chemical Engineering at Bath and Rebecca is studying Psychology at Kent. They were the first pupils to receive a bursary from Simmons & Simmons for £5000 per year to support them at University. We now have 6 ex pupils at University, supported with the bursary. All participants spoke really highly of the programme, and how the support helped them make informed choices about future careers. As Dilan said ‘the programme helped me realise that someone like me can succeed in a business like this’. You can see more about their experiences here https://simmons- simmons.wistia.com/medias/p8z9tacw77

The application process for cohort 7 for Year 10 pupils will open next term. It is always very competitive, and pupils will have to submit a formal application and be interviewed by partners from Simmons & Simmons. It is great opportunity for anyone who may seeking a career in any aspect of the corporate sector in the future. Go for it! Ms Smith

STARS inspires young Londoners to travel to school sustainably, actively, responsibly and safely by championing walking, scooting and cycling. STARS supports pupils' wellbeing, helps to reduce congestion at the school gates and improve road safety and air quality. During the last 12 months a number of our pupils have completed Cycle Safety Training which has better equipped them for cycling to and from school safely and confidently. Bethan and Freddie in Year 8 went to collect the award and participate in an exciting day of workshops to start the development of our travel plans. There were inspirational presentations from silver and gold schools, which have given us some great ideas on how we can enhance road safety outside the school and beyond. Table Tennis Equipment We were delighted to receive two weather-resistant table tennis tables from Jack Petchey Foundation and Table Tennis . These tables provide a safe and fun environment for our pupils and look great in our playground. The school is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff and these awards are a great step in the right direction.

Healthy Streets School Travel Awards 2017 Before the summer our Finance Manager, Sue Hall, applied for the Active Travel Design award being provided by Waltham Forest Council. We were so delighted upon hearing that we had won this award, which will provide £5,000 worth of cycle equipment to the school. We went to the Town Hall with Rafe, who also won an award for designing a bike hangar wrap, to collect our award from Councillor Loakes.

We work closely with LGBTQ charities to ensure we promote the LGBTQ equality across the school and to promote our zero tolerance policy on homophobic and transphobic bullying (and all buying). As part of this commitment some of our teachers have been working with Stonewall to plan a new LGBTQ inclusive Relationship and Sex curriculum. As part of this collaboration, Stonewall invited our Senior Assistant Headteacher Ms Phillips and a student to represent them at an important consultation event in Parliament to discuss the future of Relationship and Sex Education in the UK. Our student was chosen as our school representative for her commitment to LGBTQ equality and our school values and her excellent attitude to learning. The Year 9 student prepared a speech which she articulately and confidently delivered to politicians, the press and CEOs of leading educational and health organisations. The student had her photo taken with Justine Greening, The Secretary of State for Education and with other young people at the event. We are all very proud of her and Stonewall thanked her excellent contribution, shaping the future of LGBTQ inclusive education. LGBT Society The LGBT Society promotes a safe place for students to join and participate in the creation of LGBT+ events across the school, campaigns and aims to develop Frederick Bremer as a champion school of diversity, equality, and inclusion. Our Student Prefects have new responsibilities, such as managing our study rooms and games room. The recruitment process was highly competitive with 134 applications. This shows how committed our students are to our school values and how keen they are to take up leadership positions. All of our prefects attended a two hour training session before starting their prefect post. This year we have introduced a prefect mentor-buddy programme whereby Year 8 and Year 9 prefects are trained and nurtured by a KS4 prefect.

Peer Mentoring “During my involvement with the Peer Mentoring scheme I have been continually impressed with the enthusiasm, commitment and responsibility of our Year 9 and 10 mentor pupils, who have gone from strength to strength as they have succeeded at each stage of recruitment (a written application, interview and training session). I have no doubt that as the scheme progresses, they will continue to be excellent role models and set an example to their mentees and the younger year groups in general.”

Our role in school is to act as role models and peer mentors for healthy lifestyles, giving guidance to the school community. Through our training we have learnt how to work as a team, lead a workshop or presentation, and be approachable to have non-judgemental guidance conversations. In the past 3 weeks, we have been exploring what resilience means, what those behaviours look like and how we can become more resilient. We gave a series of assemblies to all year groups, a presentation to the staff body, and resilience workshops to KS4 form groups, including a self-reflection questionnaire to students and teachers.’ Ms Frogley

The concerts were an opportunity for students to perform what they have been learning all term. Year 8 performed to year 5 pupils from Woodside and Year 7 performed to parents. The concerts consisted of whole year group performances, ensembles and solos. “The enjoyment and pride on the pupils faces as they perform together and see what they have achieved over the term is absolutely lovely to see!” – Miss Gibson Miss Smith made a special debut on her violin in the Year 7 performance, showing the students that she understood the hard work and commitment it takes to learn an instrument. A massive well done to all students involved for their efforts. The quality improves year on year. Also, a thank you to the Creative Curriculum Team for their help on the day. “The Year 7 MiSST concert was a credit to all students and staff involved and it was evident that a huge amount of effort had gone in both in the rehearsals and since the beginning of term. I was impressed by both the obvious progress students had made in their instruments since September, as well as the conduct of Year 7 throughout the performance.” – Miss Kenny, Head of Year 7. “Once again another fantastic MiSST concert by our wonderful, talented pupils. I am always impressed at the quality of performances especially pupils who have only started playing since September” – Miss Kaltak “What a fantastic concert! It's so great that everyone in Year 7 gets to learn a musical instrument for free, and it was inspiring and emotional to hear them all playing together. Congratulations to all students and staff for working so hard. Well done to Ms Smith for taking Year 8's challenge to learn the violin and for playing it in front of everyone!” - Dr Janet Hoskin (parent)

Year 8 Creative Curriculum visit to Ross Wyld Care Home Students from the year 8 specialist music school visited Ross Wyld’s care home on Forest Road to sing Christmas Carols. Students sung a number of carols to the residents who listened and sung along. Carolina the Activities arranger at the Care Home said “When the students were gone our residents were really happy. The residents were really happy to listen to the kids. Some of our residents do not have any family so this kind of activity is a really amazing thing. Some of the resident’s relatives were there and they could not stop talking about the concert, really happy to hear the students singing for us. Thank you to the professional teachers. Thank you very much we really appreciate it and we hope in the New Year they can come and sing for us we are really happy to have them here”. The exhibition included works by 3 GCSE Art students from our class of 2017- the students work was selected and chosen for this particular show after Sharon’s visit to Bremer’s GCSE Art exhibition – one of whom (Jaunelle) was in attendance at the exhibition and was able to provide great insight into her work and techniques with our Year 7 pupils. Professional artist, Veronica Lindsay-Addy, whose work was being exhibited alongside many others, spoke in depth to our Year 11’s about her work and how race influenced her pieces. Our Year 11’s were able to see how cultural identity has influenced the artists, which has helped them to look at their own work in more depth for their final piece.

Follow us on twitter: @FBSchoolE17 Facebook @frederickbremerschool Website: www.bremer.org.uk Women in Art Workshop – Year 9 Art visit The Year 9 art students were given the opportunity to learn more about women’s role in art by taking part in a workshop and a tour of the May Morris exhibition at the William Morris Gallery. Using May’s work as a case study, the students looked at how women artists have been marginalised historically, the feminist art campaigns of the 1970’s and issues and debates today. They were also able to study May’s work in detail by sketching from the original pieces on display in the exhibition and the students will use this as inspiration for further work.

Year 11 Exhibition at Simmons & Simmons Since September the Year 11 students have been working on a project related to Recreation and Identity. As a stimulus for this project, pupils visited the firm of Simmons & Simmons and had a bespoke tour of their artworks related to this theme. This enabled students to analyse more deeply the issues related to identity and recreation. After much additional research the students then created final pieces which they were extremely fortunate to have exhibited in the offices of Simmons & Simmons in the City of London. This was a one off opportunity for the Year 11’s and 12 of them rose to the challenge admirably, covering subjects as diverse as politics, junk food, fashion, the military and criminology. The firm also very kindly produced a professional catalogue for the exhibition and Jon Sharples, the Art Network Chair hand wrote individual letters to all 12 students referring to their work and other artists for inspiration.

On the 6th of December the 29 students from year 7-10 went to The Old Vic to see Rhys Ifans in ‘A Christmas Carol’. The production was absolutely fantastic and embodied everything the theatre is about. The students were impeccably behaved and were an absolute credit to the school. After the performance a couple sitting amongst our pupils found me at the end to tell me how wonderful they thought our students were and that our student’s reactions to what was happening on stage made the performance for them. Well done to all of them! Miss Gunning

Oh No They Didn’t As another year ends, another panto is performed by our fantastic staff. All of our year groups had the chance to watch the wonderful performance of Cinderella. Staff performed a total of 4 shows over the last day of term. The panto also included a video from every department performing Big Shaq’s ‘Man’s Not Hot’. We hope the pupils enjoyed the show as much as everyone who took part.

The week’s celebrations were organised by Mr Abdi, Mr Akata and Mr Nelson. Together, they took the assemblies across the week with the help of three Year 10 students; Euan, Muhammed and Sahib who did an excellent job presenting to their fellow pupils. The boys epitomised the ideals we look for in young role models in presenting a series of assemblies which focused on highlighting men and boy’s health, gender equality and sexuality as well as highlighting positive role models. A group of boys from years 7, 8, 9 and 10 were also chosen to take part in two workshops. Firstly, the boys took part in a healthy cooking session where they made roasted cauliflower and pesto pasta. They showed some really impressive skills in the kitchen. The food tasted wonderful and the workshop was a great success. The second workshop was a think on your feet debate. The students discussed a range of topics that focused on issues that men and boys face in society and were encouraged to suggest ways on how we can overcome them. This sparked some meaningful debates and both the boys and teachers gained a lot from the workshop. Both groups of boys really engaged with the workshops and were a credit both to themselves and Frederick Bremer. Mr Akata

Follow us on twitter: @FBSchoolE17 Facebook @frederickbremerschool Website: www.bremer.org.uk Year 11 Girls Basketball Our Year 11 girls Basketball team also had to face off against the Heathcote’s girls team. Both teams played well with much heart and pure dedications whilst showing respect to each other. In the end of this competitive event, our year 11 girls lost to Heathcote by a narrow margin. However there is no doubt that this team won’t be able to turn it around for their next game and bring home a season win.

Year 9 Girls Basketball The Year 9 girls Basketball team clashed against Chingford in their first match of the season. They played with heart and grit and played hard as a team but were unfortunately defeated by a narrow margin. We see a bright future for the team and hope they can turn it around in the next game and bring home the win for sure.

Year 10 and 11 Fundraising match Year 10 and Year 11 boys took part in a fundraising football match. The two teams displayed high levels of respect and well-played competitive play throughout the game. In the end the Year 11 boys took the win in what was an amazing game for a good cause.

Follow us on twitter: @FBSchoolE17 Facebook @frederickbremerschool Website: www.bremer.org.uk School Gateway Please ensure you regularly access your School Gateway account. We will be sending the more detailed second academic report of the year, and without an activated Gateway account, you may not be able to access this documents.

If you are having trouble logging in, it may be because the School doesn’t have your current email address and mobile number in our database. Please contact the reception on 020 8498 3340 or [email protected] and we’ll update your details.

School Gateway is a great way for parent/carers to keep up to date with what’s going on at school and help you monitor your child’s academic progress and conduct.

Show My Homework In an effort to keep parent/carers as informed as possible we have been making more use of some features on Show My Homework.

By downloading the SMH app on your smartphone you can also sync your child’s homework calendar and school notifications, to your phone calendar, allowing you to keep fully informed of events at school.

Please also be aware we have begun a trial whereby we notify you of detentions set for homework that has not been completed. We are trialling this with the Maths department. You will only receive such notifications if your child fails to complete homework on time; these detentions will all be of a duration of 20 minutes. Notifications will appear on your SMH account as a comment from a particular piece of homework.

Therefore, we ask that you regularly check your Show My Homework parent account for notifications of events, and comments regarding detentions. If you have not already set up your SMH parent account, you can find your activation PIN on your School Gateway account in the ‘Assessment’ section under ‘Pupil Passwords’.

Please note that for head of year and senior leadership team detentions, we will continue to send emails through School Gateway.
