Wonders Will Never Cease by Robert Irwin

t is Palm Sunday 1461 and the bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil is about to Itake place outside the village of Towton. It is one of a series of engagements between the houses of York and Lancaster. The world, when younger, was more brightly coloured and its ecstasies and tortures more fiercely endured. But, ever since the Dolorous Stroke and the Showing of the Grail in the days of King Arthur, England has lain under a curse. So many have died that Hell is now full and consequently the dead stalk the land. Anthony Woodville, Lord Scales, having been killed at Towton, is vouchsafed the first of many strange visions before being resurrected. From then on adventures come running after him like hungry dogs and he will encounter the Swordsman’s Pentacle, the Draug, the Miraculous Cauldron, the Curse of the Roasted Goose, the Talking Head and the Museum of Skulls. The real world is a poor thing compared to the stories that are told about it. Anthony hears or takes part in many stories, and those stories are porous, so that men and monsters move easily in and out of them. The stories that Anthony encounters have only one purpose and it is not a good one.

Portrait of a Family with a Fat Daughter by Margherita Giacobino Translated by Judith Landry

‘It has been a long while in Italian fiction since such an authentic and engaging voice has appeared.’ Bruno Quaranta in La Stampa ortrait of a Family with a Fat Daughter tells the story of four generations of a Ppeasant family living outside Turin between the late nineteenth century and the boom years of the 1950s, as they clamber out of grinding rural poverty into the sixties world of frozen fish and fridges. The author's grandmother reluctantly emigrates to California after her marriage to an Italian emigrant, and returns to Italy semi-paralysed after a mishap as she is giving birth. The father and the child remain in the USA when her father dies the author’s eight-year-old mother returns to Italy, to be brought up by a family she does not know by her ‘three mothers’, her mother and two aunts, to become Italian again and ultimately to marry a captivating ‘man-boy’ whose fecklessness is grippingly described, as is his time in a German prison camp in World War II. She runs a small shop which gradually expands, lifting the family out of the working class; her daughter, Margherita, always a conscientious student, reared by this extended matriarchal family, becomes the writer of this book, and narrates the family’s story. ‘An epic novel, which is the story of an Italy which no longer exists, becomes the portrait of a family. It is a novel which touches the heart.’ Valeria Parrella in Grazie

argherita Giacobino was born in 1952 and lives Min Turin. She is a writer, journalist and translator from French and Italian. The Rehearsals by Vladimir Sharov Translated by Oliver Ready

ew Jerusalem Monastery, seventeenth-century . Patriarch Nikon has Ninstructed an itinerant French dramatist to stage the New Testament and hasten the Second Coming. But this will be a strange form of theatre. The actors are untrained, illiterate Russian peasants, and nobody is allowed to play Christ. They are persecuted, arrested, displaced, and ultimately replaced by their own children. Yet the rehearsals continue... A stunning reflection on art, history, religion and national identity, The Rehearsals is the seminal work in the unique oeuvre of Vladimir Sharov, Russian Booker Prize winner (2014) and author of Before & During (Read Russia award for best , 2015).

Praise for Before & During:

‘Before and During remains a disorienting read. The novel invokes real historical events and people (Tolstoy, Madame de Stael, Saint John of Kronstadt, Alexander Scriabin and Stalin, among others), swirling them into a phantasmagoric alternative chronology. Stories germinate within other stories, unfolding in astonishing variations. The clarity and directness of Sharov's prose – wonderfully rendered by Oliver Ready – are disconcerting, almost hallucinatory. His writing is at times funny, at times so piercingly moving, so brimful of unassuaged sorrow, that it causes a double-take.’ Rachel Polonsky in The New York Review of Books

historian of late-medieval Russia by training, Vladimir Sharov, born in 1952, Afirst turned to fiction in the late 1970s. It was not until the 1990s, however, that his extraordinarily imaginative and daring novels come to the attention of the public. When they did, they caused acrimony and controversy. Before and During was his first novel to appear in English when it was published in 2014.

The of Ivan Krylov

Translated by Stephen Pimenoff

van Krylov has been loved by the Russian people for 200 years for his Fables, Iworks in which he gently satirizes the manifold weaknesses and failings of human beings, especially figures of authority, while at the same time praising and holding up for emulation the qualities in ordinary people of selflessness, industry, loyalty, love, friendship, perseverance… Solid, earthy common sense and a long acquaintance with the ways of the world lie at the root of Krylov’s observations. Some of the Fables are no more than humorous glimpses of life and human nature, or snapshots of the bizarre preoccupations of fantasists, eccentrics, idealists and dreamers. Others offer wry, sardonic glimpses of life, and human relationships and behaviour. Yet others offer wise advice on the conduct of life, or are “cautionary tales”: warnings about the consequences of ill-considered behaviour. The Fables are elegantly written, and flavoured with apposite allusions to Classical mythology and a good deal of humour. Like other great allegorical writings such as A Pilgrim’s Progress, Don Quixote, and Animal Farm they can be read on different levels, and enjoyed by all, from young children to the very old. van Andreyevitch Krylov was born near St. Petersburg in I1769 into a poor family of the minor nobility. His father, an army captain, died without a pension when Krylov was ten, leaving the family destitute. Krylov trained for the civil service, but from his early years nurtured literary ambitions. As a young man he wrote for satirical magazines and the theatre, but was constantly thwarted by the official censor. At the age of forty he published his first book of Fables, works written after the manner of and La Fontaine. They were an instant success, and were followed over the next 35 years by another eight books. He became a celebrated and much-loved literary figure. £9.99 3 February 2017 ISBN 978 1 910213 51 3 268p B. Format Rights: Dedalus World English in this translation

Toomas Nipernaadi by August Gailit Translated by Eva & Jason Finch

oomas Nipernaadi is one of the more peculiar works in the Estonian literary canon, Tand its eponymous male protagonist is without doubt one of the most exciting characters in the language. First of all he seems merely to be a man who travels from place to place charming people and telling stories, only to forget it all in the blink of an eye. But perhaps, more than anybody, it is precisely he who remembers. Perhaps all the hearts he touches will remain dear to him. The idea of Toomas Nipernaadi is said to have come to Gailit when he heard a man’s echoing footsteps in a Berlin theatre, and those who wish to, will hear this sound in the text of his novel. In many ways the protagonist can be seen as the writer’s alter ego. Those close to Gailit knew that beneath his self-confidence and brio, a tender and melancholy soul was hiding, which the reader will no doubt be able to recognise in Toomas Nipernaadi. Since it was first published in 1928, the book has conquered one heart after another, and it will charm many coming generations. Besides other things, it captures the dream-like summer of Estonia: brief yet eternally recurring.

ugust Gailit (1891-1960) was a writer of exuberant Aimagination, a late neo-romanticist, whose entire output focuses on the external opposition of beauty and ugliness. His most influential work is Toomas Nipernaadi (1928). Toomas Nipernaadi has become both a classic figure and text in Estonia. A film adaptation entitled Nipernaadi and directed by Kaljo Kiisk was released in 1983. August Gailit's story Maiden of the North is featured in The Dedalus Book of Estonian Literature. He emigrated to Sweden in 1944.

11 DEDALUS EUROPEAN CLASSICS Seven Brothers by Alexis Kivi Translated by David Hackston

leksis Kivi’s Seven Brothers is a unique classic of 19th century Finnish literature, Aa work that has remained an unrivalled favourite among Finnish readers for almost 150 years. At the time of its publication the work was initially seen as an allegory of the birth of the Finnish nation and its path from ignorance to civilisation. More recently it has been understood to be one of the great melting pots of European literature, as the story of a group of illiterate brothers in the Finnish countryside borrows, modifies and reshapes a wide variety of classical and Renaissance literature.

First published in 1870, Seven Brothers was the first novel written in Finnish. Almost singlehandedly the novel created the literary Finnish language. Stylistically Seven Brothers explores a wide variety of narrative styles, the prose at times parodying the language of the Bible and at others employing and dialogue. Today the world of the novel, its characters, events, stories, songs and poems, permeates every layer of Finnish culture.

leksis Kivi (born Aleksis Stenvall,1834–1872) is widely considered the Afather of the Finnish novel. Kivi also wrote poetry and plays which are now considered classic works but it is for Seven Brothers that he will always be remembered.

12 DEDALUS EUROPEAN CLASSICS The Illustrious House of Ramires by Eça de Queiroz Translated by Margaret Jull Costa

his new translation of The Illustrious House of Ramires completes the Dedalus TEça de Queiroz project begun in 1992. From his first book The Mystery of the Sintra Road, written with his friend Ortega to the mature masterpieces The Crime of Father Amaro and The Maias and the work published after his death, including the wonderful The Tragedy of the Street of Flowers only published in 1980. These ten books all impeccably translated by Margaret Jull Costa are a fitting English monument to one of Europe’s greatest novelists. First published in 1900, the year of Eça de Queiroz’s death, the book portrays Gonçalo Mendes Ramires, the latest member of an aristocratic family that predates even the kings of Portugal. In the isolation of the gloomy ancient tower of Santa Ireneia, Gonçalo rehearses the feats of derring-do of an uninterrupted line of ancestors whose most recent contribution is himself, ‘a graduate who had failed his third year examinations at university’. Hoping to win some small scholarly reputation and thus secure a political future in the capital, Gonçalo sets out to portray, à la Walter Scott, the adventures of one such ancestor. Eça de Queiroz’s luxurious prose lends itself well to both the subtle irony of his morality play and the beauty of a decrepit Portuguese estate with its autumn sun, wilting flowers, faded portraits and other reminders of a bloody and powerful past.

ça de Queiroz (1845–1900) is considered EPortugal’s greatest novelist.
