Karaula Welcome from the Chair of the Local Organizing Committee On behalf of the Organizing and Scientific Committees, Veterinary Faculty of the Zagreb University, European Society of Veterinary Pathology, Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development of the Republic of Croatia it is my honor to welcome you to Dubrovnik for 26th Meeting of the European Society of Veterinary Pathology. Our Meeting was and it still is the most important scientific event in the field of Veterinary Pathology which is recognized every year by couple of hundred veterinary pathologists not only from Europe but from all over the world. This tendency is especially present this year, and all of us are very pleased because of that. All organizers made an effort to review the scientific contributions of the submitted papers and to organize it in the adequate sections. The best and/or most interesting works will be orally presented, and the Scientific Committee decides to give more time for the oral lectures. We also hope that you will find that invited key lectures reflect our goal considering most challenging current topics in the veterinary pathology. City of Dubrovnik almost needs no presentation. Conference venue is close to the old city and I hope that every participant will find some extra time for him- or herself to visit and see what Dubrovnik offers to those who decide to give little bit more attention to this mystic, ancient place.     Viehhandelsprotokolle aus dem Landkreis Gießen Hanno Müller 1. Einleitung Bei den Recherchen für eine Arbeit über die früher in Steinbach leben- den Juden stieß ich vor etwa 20 Jahren im Steinbacher Gemeindearchiv auf das „Viehhandelsprotokollbuch“.1 War ich anfangs überzeugt davon, dass derartige Protokollbücher nicht sehr häufig in anderen Archiven anzutreffen seien, stellte sich diese Annahme bei späterer intensiverer Suche als falsch heraus. Protokollbücher über den Vieh- handel (und andere Geschäfte) haben sich in vielen Gemeinden erhal- ten. Allerdings sind die Zeiträume, während derer sie geführt wurden bzw. für die sie erhalten sind, sehr unterschiedlich. Für diese hier vor- gelegte Betrachtung wurden Viehhandelsprotokollbücher aus Fern- wald-Steinbach und Fernwald-Albach, aus Pohlheim-Hausen, aus Lich und seinen Stadtteilen Ober-Bessingen und Langsdorf bearbeitet. Dabei wurden über 1.200 Protokolle aus dem Zeitraum 1822 bis 1902 durch- gesehen. Die Protokolle enthalten wichtige sozial- und wirtschafts- geschichtliche Informationen über das Zusammenleben von Christen und Juden im 19. Jahrhundert in den Dörfern Oberhessens. Sie sind aber auch und hier vor allem die früh einsetzenden wie die von Albach und Langsdorf, wichtige genealogische Quellen. Mit diesem Aufsatz möchte ich die Aufmerksamkeit auf diese wichtigen Zeitzeugnisse lenken, die noch in vielen Archiven lagern, und einen kleinen Einblick in die ab und an recht verzwickte Materie geben. Der Aufsatz wird beschlossen mit einer Aufstellung der in den Protokollen genannten Viehhändler. 2. Viehhandelsprotokolle Die Anfertigung von Protokollen für allen Viehhandel und Tausch war in der Landgrafschaft Hessen schon in einer Verordnung vom 29. Januar 1769 vorgeschrieben worden.
