Can- Dom- tate ino Choir School News A Newsletter for Alumni & Friends of Saint Thomas Choir School SUMMER/FALL 2017 SUMMER/FALL The Class of 2017 FROM THE HEADMASTER’ S DESK After fourteen years at Saint Thomas, I’ve become eligible for my first-ever sabbatical, a six-month period beginning on July 1, 2017. During my absence, Amy Francisco, our seasoned English teacher, will expand her responsibilities to serve as Acting Head of School. As the newsletter goes to press, I’m making final preparations for this exciting opportunity and passing the reins into Ms. Francisco’s capable hands. My time away will be divided between two spots rather unlike West 58th Street: Morocco and Marseille. I’ll be working in parishes with significant ministries to refugees, and the focus of my daily life and work will shift markedly from my “day job.” Rather than addressing the educational needs of young people, I’ll be helping persons from different creeds and cultures who seek a better life for themselves and their families, often against great adversity. As stimulating as these challenges will be, I shall miss the rhythm of our common life at Saint Thomas. Happily, time apart is beneficial: it reminds us of our many blessings and our capacity to build meaningful relationships in new contexts. I look forward to returning to Saint Thomas in January 2018 with fresh perspectives – and stories to share. You are always in my thoughts and prayers. –Charles F. Wallace, Headmaster GRADUATION The ninety-eighth commencement exercises of the Choir School were held on June 10. -

The Complete Obama Timeline February 2016 On February 1, 2016 more than $100 billion in assets is released to Iran. (The White House had claimed it would be only $50 billion. One or both of the two parties is lying.) [87369, 87380, 87381, 87405] The Sun reports that Great Britain “is home to more than 3 million Muslims for the first time ever with more than half born outside the UK, according to new figures. Soaring immigration and sky high birth rates have seen the number in the country double in a little over a decade. Some parts of London are now almost 50 per cent Islamic, according to analysis from the Office for National Statistics. If current trends continue the areas could become majority Muslim within ten years. …Followers of Islam now make up one in every 20 people within the country.” (The process is “birth jihad” or “stealth jihad.” Muslims take over an area first via immigration, both legal and illegal, and they then dominate the culture as a result of their phenomenal birth rates— all the while collecting welfare benefits funded by taxpayers who fear being shamed as “Islamophobes” if they object. Parts of Europe are being destroyed in the process.) [87371, 87372] Workers at a refugee center in Sweden are banned from holding a memorial service for co- worker Alexandra Mezher, who was killed by a migrant, in order to “secure the well-being of the children.” (Translation: “We do not want to upset the Muslim refugees or let them think killing Swedes is not an acceptable pastime.”) [87427, 87429] CNN reports that leftist billionaire George Soros has donated $6 million to Hillary Clinton’s political action committee (PAC). -

Our World Is Burning
OUR WORLD IS BURNING John Scales Avery September 27, 2020 INTRODUCTION1 Two time scales The central problem which the world faces in its attempts to avoid catas- trophic climate change is a contrast of time scales. In order to save human civilization and the biosphere from the most catastrophic effects of climate change we need to act immediately, Fossil fuels must be left in the ground. Forests must be saved from destruction by beef or palm oil production. These vitally necessary actions are opposed by powerful economic inter- ests, by powerful fossil fuel corporations desperate to monetize their under- ground “assets”, and by corrupt politicians receiving money the beef or palm oil industries. However, although some disastrous effects climate change are already visible, the worst of these calamities lie in the distant future. Therefore it is difficult to mobilize the political will for quick action. We need to act immediately, because of the danger of passing tipping points beyond which climate change will become irreversible despite human efforts to control it. Tipping points are associated with feedback loops, such as the albedo effect and the methane hydrate feedback loop. The albedo effect is important in connection with whether the sunlight falling on polar seas is reflected or absorbed. While ice remains, most of the sunlight is reflected, but as areas of sea surface become ice-free, more sunlight is absorbed, leading to rising temperatures and further melting of sea ice, and so on, in a loop. The methane hydrate feedback loop involves vast quantities of the power- ful greenhouse gas methane, CH4, frozen in a crystalline form surrounded by water molecules. -
Inclusion of Frontline Communities in the Sunrise Movement Senior Honors Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the School of Arts
Inclusion of Frontline Communities in the Sunrise Movement Senior Honors Thesis Presented to The Faculty of the School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Undergraduate Program in Environmental Studies Professor Brian Donahue, Advisor In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts by Phoebe Dolan April 2020 Copyright by Phoebe Dolan Committee Members Professor Brian Donahue Professor Sabine Von Mering Professor Gowri ViJayakumar Abstract Environmental activism and climate activism have a long history in the United States. Historically the membership of the environmental movement was white, old, educated and mostly male. This history led to the exclusion of communities of color, low income communities and indigenous communities from the mainstream climate movement. The Sunrise Movement is a youth climate movement, founded in 2017, fighting for the futures of young people in the face of the climate crisis. Sunrise has the unique angle of representing youth as a frontline to the future of the climate crisis, but as a movement how are they uplifting other frontline communities such as people of color, low income communities, island populations and beyond? How does the Sunrise Movement uplift and center frontline communities in their organizations, what are their tactics, where are they challenged and how are they succeeding? I interviewed 11 current leaders within the Sunrise movement and asked them if Sunrise succeeded at uplifting and centering frontline communities and where they were challenged. Common themes came up for many participants, Sunrise embraces storytelling as a form of narrative around climate justice, but they tend to tokenize frontline voices. Urgency is necessary for the Sunrise Movement to act on the climate crisis, but Sunrise must curb their speed in order to focus on inclusion as a movement goal. -
