HUMAN NATURE John Scales Avery July 13, 2020 INTRODUCTION1 Human nature as a central theme of philosophy What is human nature? Are we humans good or evil? To what extent is the character of a person produced by heredity, and to what extent by environ- ment? Is competition more central to our existence than cooperation, or is it the other way around? How can a happy, peaceful and stable society be created? Are humans essentially the same as other animals, or are we funda- mentally different? Should humans dominate and control nature, or should we be the custodians of nature? These questions are central to philosophy, and they will be discussed in this book. Conflicting answers have been given by philosophers, scientists and religious leaders offer the centuries, from ear- liest times until the present. These answers will be reviewed and discussed. The chemistry and physiology of emotions Human emotions have a long evolutionary history. We share many emotions with our animal relatives - for example, mother love, fear and anger. Modern science has given us an insight into the chemistry and physiology of emotions. In our human brains, and in those of animals, there are billions of chemi- cally moderated connections between neurons. These are called synapses. Whether or not a synapse “fires” and transmits its message to the next neuron depends on the chemical environment of the synapse, and this en- vironment changes under the influence of hormones released by our glands, which are in turn influenced by our emotions. Ethology: the science of inherited behavior patterns Charles Darwin’s book The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals (1871) shows that he was aware that behavior patterns are just as reliably inherited as physical characteristics, and that they are similar within related groups of animals. For example, all members of the cat family show similar car-like behavior. Because of this pioneering book, Darwin is considered to be the founder of the science of ethology, the study of inherited behavior patterns. 1This book makes heavy use of my previously published chapters in various books, but a considerable amount of new material has also been added More recently, in 1973, Karl von Frisch (1886-1982), Nikolaas Tinbergen (1907-1988), and Konrad Lorenz (1903-1989), shared a Nobel Prize in Phys- iology or Medicine. Karl von Frisch won his share of the prize for his studies of the waggle dance by which bees transmit information to their hive-mates. Tinbergen, who is famous for his studies of the instincts of birds, has pointed out that no modern ethologist would debate the question of whether heredity or environment plays a greater role in forming the character of an individual, since all learning is built upon a base of genetic predisposition without which it would be impossible. The third 1973 laureate, Konrad Lorenz, is most controversial, but also the most interesting of the three, since his famous book On Aggression casts light on why humans are so susceptible to militarism. The dark side of human nature Are humans good or evil? We can find evidence for both sides of human nature. It seems that humans can behave in both ways, depending on the circumstances in which they find themselves. In this book, a chapter is devoted to Neoliberalism, Racism and Neo-Fascism, where we see in detail the dark side of human nature. In the recent killing of George Floyd, we see both sides of human nature. The brutal killing, and Donald Trumps reaction show the dark side, while the worldwide anti-racist protests show human nature at its compassionate best. Our collective shortsightedness: The climate emergency There is a remarkable contrast in the way that governments around the world have responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and the way that they have re- sponded to the climate emergency. The pandemic, which indeed represents an extremely grave danger to humanity, has produced a massive global re- sponse. Borders have been closed, airlines have become virtually inoperative, industries, restaurants and entertainments have been closed, sporting events have been cancelled or postponed, people have been asked to stay at home and practice social distancing, and the everyday life of citizens around the world has been drastically changed. By contrast, let us consider the threat that if immediate action is not taken to halt the extraction and use of fossil fuels, irreversible feedback loops will be initiated which will make catastrophic climate change inevitable de- spite human any human efforts to prevent it. This threat is even more serious than the COVID-19 pandemic. Climate change could make much of the earth too hot for human life. It could produce a famine involving billions of people, rather than millions. And yet the world has hardly reacted at all. A minority, for example the Scandinavian countries, have taken appropri- ate action. Most governments pay lip service to the emergency, but do not take effective action; and a few countries, such as the United States under Donald Trump, Bolsonaro’s Brazil, and Saudi Arabia, deny that there is a climate emergency and actively sabotage action. The world’s net response has been totally inadequate. The Keeling Curve, which measures CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere, continues to rise, and the rate of rising is even increasing. What is the reason for this remarkable contrast between our strong reaction to the pandemic and our neglect of the climate crisis? Is it because we see clearly what is near to us and neglect whatever is far away? Or are powerful financial forces at work, controlling the mass media? Sex and overconsumption If we are to have a chance of avoiding catastrophic climate change, each of us must reduce his or her carbon footprint. Particularly in the wealthy parts of the world, we must simplify our lives and renounce overconsumption. Humans must stop using material goods as a means of social competition. Human nature is best suited to sharing societies What kind of society will make us happy and safe? What kind of society is sustainable? What kind of society is most in harmony with human nature? Our emotions have not changed much since the time when humans were hunter-gatherers, living in egalitarian groups that shared food whenever they were able to find it. There is much evidence that also today sharing and egalitarian societies are more happy than those with excessive individualism and competition.     Can- Dom- tate ino Choir School News A Newsletter for Alumni & Friends of Saint Thomas Choir School SUMMER/FALL 2017 SUMMER/FALL The Class of 2017 FROM THE HEADMASTER’ S DESK After fourteen years at Saint Thomas, I’ve become eligible for my first-ever sabbatical, a six-month period beginning on July 1, 2017. During my absence, Amy Francisco, our seasoned English teacher, will expand her responsibilities to serve as Acting Head of School. As the newsletter goes to press, I’m making final preparations for this exciting opportunity and passing the reins into Ms. Francisco’s capable hands. My time away will be divided between two spots rather unlike West 58th Street: Morocco and Marseille. I’ll be working in parishes with significant ministries to refugees, and the focus of my daily life and work will shift markedly from my “day job.” Rather than addressing the educational needs of young people, I’ll be helping persons from different creeds and cultures who seek a better life for themselves and their families, often against great adversity. As stimulating as these challenges will be, I shall miss the rhythm of our common life at Saint Thomas. Happily, time apart is beneficial: it reminds us of our many blessings and our capacity to build meaningful relationships in new contexts. I look forward to returning to Saint Thomas in January 2018 with fresh perspectives – and stories to share. You are always in my thoughts and prayers. –Charles F.     ETHICS AND EVOLUTION John Scales Avery December 1, 2017 Introduction In October, 2017, one of the Danish state television channels, DR2, broad- cast two programs about current religious opposition to Darwin’s theory of evolution1. Much of this opposition originated in the United States, and was aimed at preventing the teaching of evolution in schools. The attacks on Darwin’s theory (by now, not a theory but a well-established scientific fact) were twofold. First the claim that it is not true, and secondly, pointing out that historically, Social Darwinism has led to horrible consequences. One of the arguments against the truth of Darwinian evolution is that it violates the second law of thermodynamics, according to which the disorder of the universe always increases with time. How then can life on earth, with its amazing order, be possible? The answer is that the earth is not a closed system. A flood of information- containing free energy reaches the earth’s biosphere in the form of sunlight. Passing through the metabolic pathways of living organisms, this informa- tion keeps the organisms far away from thermodynamic equilibrium, which is death. As the thermodynamic information flows through the biosphere, much of it is degraded to heat, but part is converted into cybernetic infor- mation and preserved in the intricate structures which are characteristic of life. The principle of natural selection ensures that when this happens, the configurations of matter in living organisms constantly increase in complex- ity, refinement and statistical improbability. This is the process which we call evolution, or in the case of human society, progress2.

    Nations in Transit brief May 2018 Far-right Extremism as a Threat to Ukrainian Democracy Vyacheslav Likhachev Kyiv-based expert on right-wing groups in Ukraine and Russia Photo by Aleksandr Volchanskiy • Far-right political forces present a real threat to the democratic development of Ukrainian society. This brief seeks to provide an overview of the nature and extent of their activities, without overstating the threat they pose. To this end, the brief differentiates between radical groups, which by and large ex- press their ideas through peaceful participation in democratic processes, and extremist groups, which use physical violence as a means to influence society. • For the first 20 years of Ukrainian independence, far-right groups had been undisputedly marginal elements in society. But over the last few years, the situation has changed. After Ukraine’s 2014 Euro- maidan Revolution and Russia’s subsequent aggression, extreme nationalist views and groups, along with their preachers and propagandists, have been granted significant legitimacy by the wider society. • Nevertheless, current polling data indicates that the far right has no real chance of being elected in the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections in 2019. Similarly, despite the fact that several of these groups have real life combat experience, paramilitary structures, and even access to arms, they are not ready or able to challenge the state. • Extremist groups are, however, aggressively trying to impose their agenda on Ukrainian society, in- cluding by using force against those with opposite political and cultural views. They are a real physical threat to left-wing, feminist, liberal, and LGBT activists, human rights defenders, as well as ethnic and religious minorities.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed ownership of criminal reform because he signed the FIRST STEP Act—a bipartisan federal sentencing and prison reform bill. A month after signing the bill, he proclaimed, “I did criminal justice reform, nobody else. I did it. Without me, you don’t have criminal justice reform.” In fall 2019, he again declared, “I did criminal justice reform, which President Obama could not get approved—which the media never talks about. If President Obama got criminal justice reform done, it would be front-page stories all over the place. I got it done.”1 But these claims fly in the face of nearly every action this administration has taken, most of which are antithetical to reform efforts. Too often, the full context of the Trump administration’s record on criminal jus- tice reform is obscured by celebrities visiting the White House and award ceremo- nies.2 However, behind the scenes, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) regularly contravenes the efforts of the criminal justice reform movement. Even Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who rarely broke with Trump, has explicitly said, “the mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the President and other powerful people.” These “other powerful people” include a vast array of conservative officials and Trump allies who perpetuated false claims of fraud in the 2020 election after enjoying critical support from the groups that fueled the Capitol riot. In fact, at least 43 current Governors or elected federal office holders have direct ties to the groups that helped plan the January 6th rally, along with at least 15 members of Donald Trump’s former administration.
