School Description and Mission Statement (School Year 2020-2021)

Royal Oak Middle School proudly serves Charter Oak Unified School District's seventh and eighth grade students and successfully prepares them for the rigors and life skills needed for a successful high school experience. Royal Oak's mascot is the strong and adaptable roadrunner, a bird known for its intelligence and fortitude. “Every Student, Every Day; Whatever It Takes” is the motto that the entire school rallies around to encourage and ensure that all students find success and are well-prepared for their future endeavors. Royal Oak students benefit from and enjoy the support of an active Associated Student Body (ASB), Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC). The School Site Council (SSC) oversees the goals and progress of the recently identified Targeted Assistance Title I school. Royal Oak Middle School is situated on a former high school campus (Royal Oak High School) and shares its impressive state-of- the-art theater, multipurpose building and gymnasium, all on a 41 acre park-like campus, with community groups, sports leagues, scouts, and a variety of district and non-district programs. Royal Oak Middle School offers a comprehensive educational program and is renowned for its exceptional electives program, particularly the outstanding music, drama, ASB/Leadership, TV Media, and athletics programs. Students participate in full scale Broadway theater productions, Color Guard/Winter Guard, choral and band concerts, and compete in cross-country, flag football, volleyball, basketball, track and Field. Our students lead and participate in a variety of clubs on campus such as Soccer Club, Spiritual Place of Teens (SPOT), Mix It Up, Yearbook, Pokemon, Chess Club, Spelling Bee Club, Architecture Club, Robotics Club and Book Club, to name a few.

Royal Oak Middle School is proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) National Highly Certified School since 2006. Royal Oak also offers AVID Excel, an elective class focused on the academic language needs of Long Term English Learners (LTELs) to support their reclassification efforts. Our instructional staff use a variety of AVID strategies such as Socratic Seminars, Focus Notes and Philosophical Chairs to engender cooperative learning, self-analysis and reflection and goal setting for all students. All students participate in school-wide binder and backpack checks during their 25-minute Homeroom class to ensure that they are organized and prepared. The AVID elective targets a select group of students who are determined to prepare themselves for the rigors of college. AVID and AVID Excel students participate in field trips to local colleges and universities and articulate with Charter Oak High School AVID students. Royal Oak’s TV Media students produce broadcasts of the Daily Bulletin in a news format via podcast or YouTube. The broadcast is now seen by students via large screen SMARTBoards with built-in speaker systems. TV Media students also film promotional videos for the school and broadcast informational and About Our School educational video productions for events and subjects such as Red Ribbon Week, Veteran’s Day and anti-bullying/anti-violence campaigns. Royal Oak also provides opportunities for students that extend beyond the classroom, including participation in the County Science Fair, the Los Angeles County History Day, AstroCamp and the Catalina Island Marine Institute. Spelling bees, Million Word Challenges, PTSA Reflections Program and other contests are available for students who wish to enter competitive programs.

Royal Oak Middle School is committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students. We are committed to providing opportunities for all students to learn in our ever-changing collaborative and technological world so that we stay true to our motto of “Every Student, Every Day; Whatever It Takes”. Our innovative intervention programs, such as Homework Club, Catch-Up Club, Premier Academic Saturday School (PASS) and targeted in-school and after school interventions provide developmentally appropriate opportunities for our middle school students to succeed before, during, after school and on Saturdays. Royal Oak has made great gains and continues to strive towards excellence. Royal Oak Middle School is proud to be an active Capturing Kids Hearts school. These programs, along with an emphasis on creating a positive and safe environment for adolescents, provide every student with the tools and the support necessary to achieve academic, social, emotional, and physical excellence.

Our Professional Learning Communities and the scheduling of students in cores of four academic subject-area teachers facilitates teacher collaboration centered on student success. Royal Oak’s Student-Led Conferences are a great success because each student presents his or her portfolio to his or her family and each student takes direct responsibility for his or her successes and improvement needs. Parents also have the opportunity to interact with all six of their child’s teachers at one time. Administrators, teachers, support staff, parents, students, and community members work together as partners in learning and aim to develop students that possess the following life skills and personality traits: • Self-directed lifelong learners who possess all the needed academic skills to succeed in high school, college and the international work force. • Self-confident decision-makers leading to responsible actions. • Creative critical thinkers and problem solvers. • Self-disciplined and responsible citizens. • Socially cognizant individuals who believe in community service by sharing their talents with mankind. • Fair-minded individuals who respect the rights and beliefs of all citizens in their culturally rich society.

The school day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2:40 p.m. Selected students enrolled in academic electives (i.e. AVID, ELD, AVID Excel) have the opportunity to attend a Zero Period PE class that begins at 7:00 am. Early Release schedules (1:40 pm dismissal) every Wednesday are aligned with the Late Start days at all five elementary schools to facilitate articulation, professional development opportunities and department/core meetings. Teen Scene offers a comprehensive before school and afterschool daycare program that opens at 6:30 am for students needing early morning care and closes at 6:30 pm to assure high quality after school supervision of students whose parents work late or commute from afar. School Facility Conditions and Planned Improvements

Royal Oak Middle School is one of ten schools in the Charter Oak Unified School District, located in the City of Covina. Royal Oak currently serves 711 students in the seventh and eighth grades. Royal Oak became a 6-8 school in 1985, and a 7-8 program in 2007, but the school originally opened in 1965 as Royal Oak High School. The school currently has thirty- eight regular classrooms, eleven portable classrooms, a staff lounge, a teacher workroom, a gymnasium with attached locker rooms, an industrial arts building, and a library. The H. K. Baird Theater and Commons (cafeteria) are the newest buildings. Adult Education funds were used to build a Parent Education building in the northwest side of the parking lot.

The Charter Oak Unified School District has in place a district-wide facilities program to include inspections of all facilities to ensure that they are clean and maintained. In addition, the staff and district maintenance department work together to provide ongoing repair and improvement of the school’s facilities. All safety issues are addressed immediately. Facility upgrades continue to be planned and completed with the use of Measure CO bond funding.

Community members participate in planning and decision-making at Royal Oak Middle School with representation on the School Site Council, English Language Advisory Committee and PTSA. Several school functions such as dances and Red Ribbon Week are supported by PTA and/or co-sponsored by the Associated Student Body. Parent volunteers assist with clerical duties, classroom work, the library, and activity schedules. We actively recruit parents and community members to assist with Royal Oak’s drama, music and homemaking programs.

School Safety Plan (School Year 2020-2021)

Safety of students and staff is a top priority at Royal Oak Middle School. Royal Oak is in compliance with all laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to hazardous materials and State earthquake standards. The school’s disaster preparedness plan includes steps for ensuring student and staff safety during a disaster. Fire, lockdown and earthquake drills are conducted on a monthly basis. School grounds are monitored before, during, and after school by assigned staff. All visitors must report to the front office, sign in, and obtain a visitor’s pass. In compliance with Senate Bill 187, Royal Oak has a comprehensive safety plan to include child abuse reporting procedures, teacher notification of dangerous pupil procedures, disaster response procedures, procedures for safe ingress and egress from school, sexual harassment and bullying policies, and dress code guidelines. In compliance with AB 9 (Seth’s Law), bullying prevention and reporting procedures are reviewed with staff and students. Royal Oak reviews safety plans and procedures in August of each year and updates it as needed. An updated copy of the plan is available to the public at the school site and at the district office. In addition, we emphasize: • A Professional Learning Community (PLC)/Core Family concept for seventh and eighth graders so students do not fall through the cracks. The PLC model ensures that middle school students are better served and monitored for academic and social-emotional needs. • Safety and campus behavior assemblies and class visitations by administrators to emphasize the importance of personal responsibility and campus rules. • Safety information routinely discussed at faculty meetings and shared through the Daily Bulletin and social media. • A School Resource Officer is available in times of need. The staff maintains high visibility between classes in order to interact with students.
