Abstract The Portrait of the Kings and the Historiographical Poetics of the Deuteronomistic Historian By Alison Lori Joseph Doctor of Philosophy in Near Eastern Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Ronald Hendel, Chair This dissertation explores the historiographical style and method of the Deuteronomist (Dtr) in the book of Kings, with particular attention to what I call the prototype strategy in the portrayal of the Israelite kings. It lays out a systematic analysis of Dtr’s historiographical composition and the ways he includes and reshapes his inherited sources to suit his purposes. This work offers a framework for the selectional and compositional method that Dtr employs in the construction of his history, and especially in crafting the portrait of the kings. This analysis suggests that Dtr has a specific set of historiographical priorities to which he adheres in order to interpret the history of the monarchy in light of deuteronomistic theology. This is done through crafting a comprehensive narrative that functions didactically, instructing the kings and the people of Judah how to behave through illustrating the consequences of disobedience. A key element to Dtr’s historiographical process is the use of a prototype strategy. -

It off ers a con- tribution to our understanding of the symbolic world of the Owambo of old, and to the discussion on how political power was constituted in Africa and more widely. Th e voice of local Owambo, most of them men born around the turn of the last century, is heard throughout these pages. Th eir witness is complemented with other voices that broaden the perspective – those of early foreign travellers before 1870 and of mis- sionaries, who, from the 1870s onward, lived with, commented on and intervened in the power politics of Owambo kings. -

The information was collected from theme interviews from the members of Amaranthe, Epica and Sonata Arctica and this thesis was written based on their answers using qualitative research. Based on the interviews we can say that each musician has taken some influences from their role models. The influences they take from other musicians’ songs are mostly the stylish or atmospherical influence. For all musicians, the common source of inspiration was books and movies. The role models affected these people in different ways, but what was common was that they have learned from them with consideration, following only the good practices. In this thesis I compared my own composing process to my role models’ composing processes. There was a lot in common, it turned out, that the most of these composers compose alone. The most important tips for aspiring composers were to “follow your heart”, “let the music choose you” and “never give up”. BEHIND THE BLACK VEIL- the story of Dark Sarah Dark Sarah´s- debut album "Behind the Black Veil" tells the story of Sarah, a nice young woman, who faces one of the biggest crises in her life when her husband leaves her at the altar and leaves with another woman straight from church. Sarah thinks she's going to die and after spending some time at home alone, watching the rain outside, she collapses on the floor. After a while there is only silence, only darkness, until she rises, trembling. Scattered mascara has formed the character of Horus around her eye. With glassy eyes, she writes a letter: "I used to look at the world with blue eyes, I used to love with an open heart but I was naive, the world needed to show that to me. I got angry for my weakness and angry with the world. In the darkest swirls of my mind I got stronger and meaner and started to change. I worked with my fear and I became DARK SARAH. I'm not bitter; I'm just bittersweet. " and she signs the letter - Dark Sarah- Because of the trauma she has faced, another side of her personality wakes up inside her mind. She changes into Dark Sarah, the complete opposite of everything she represented before. She declares a war against her former husband and swears revenge. Furthermore she looms in between her two personalities. These are the events of EPISODE I. "Save me" is the intro song and tells the story of how a confused Sarah, still wearing her wedding dress, wanders in the woods and at the end meets her husband tied up in a dark forest - in reality or in a dream? "Poison Apple" is a premonition of the future, dream-like illusion, where she plans her revenge.
