All four generations of electronic digital computing machines are presented in the Museum. Some of the EDCM are working. In addition, the Museum created fourteen personal funds of Russian scientists who devoted their activity to computer science. This computers’ collection is the only one of such variety and size in Russia. Domestic PC Production in the Soviet Baltic States 1977-1992 Laur Kanger PhD The University of Edinburgh 2013 Abstract The thesis argues for the necessity and value of a two-way interaction between high- level abstractions and rich historical narratives mediated by middle-range theories. The basic assumptions of critical realism are used to derive a socio-technical metatheory which, in turn, structures the synthesis of specific substantive theories. The conceptual tools provided by the Multi-Level Perspective, Analytical Sociology and (Technological) Systems of Innovation frameworks guide the study of the cases. The empirical core of the thesis consists of detailed histories of the birth, development and decay of ten different personal computer production attempts in the Soviet Baltic states roughly between 1977 and 1992. -

Burghart 1991 SUMMARY Technology transfer is a topic that has received wide attention in recent years, especially with regard to Soviet attempts to obtain technologies from the West that are considered to be sensitive in terms of western security. The effects such transfers have, however, are not always those that would be expected and in many cases have not resulted in the ends that the Soviets hoped to achieve. This paper seeks to examine the true nature and effect of technology transfers between the West and the Soviet Union in the area of computers, especially duing the period from 1985 to the present. It is argued that while such transfers have not been effective in the past, changes in the Soviet Union’s approach to the acquisition and integration of foreign technology, under the program of economic reform now taking place, will increase the effectiveness of these efforts in the future. -

The first electronic digital computing machines appeared in the USSR in 1951 and allowed scientists to solve difficult scientific and technical tasks. They were the Small Electronic Calculating Machine (МESМ), developed under the leadership of academician Sergei Lebedev, and the Automatic Digital Computer (M-1), developed under the leadership of Isaak Bruk. -

Issue Number 9 Spring 1994 Computer Conservation Society Aims and objectives The Computer Conservation Society (CCS) is a co-operative venture between the British Computer Society and the Science Museum of London. The CCS was constituted in September 1989 as a Specialist Group of the British Computer Society (BCS). It thus is covered by the Royal Charter and charitable status of the BCS. The aims of the CCS are to o Promote the conservation of historic computers o Develop awareness of the importance of historic computers o Encourage research on historic computers Membership is open to anyone interested in computer conservation and the history of computing. The CCS is funded and supported by a grant from the BCS, fees from corporate membership, donations, and by the free use of Science Museum facilities. Membership is free but some charges may be made for publications and attendance at seminars and conferences. There are a number of active Working Parties on specific computer restorations and early computer technologies and software. Younger people are especially encouraged to take part in order to achieve skills transfer. The corporate members who are supporting the Society are Bull HN Information Systems, Digital Equipment, ICL, Unisys and Vaughan Systems.
