Commichau) hat in Heidelberg und Madrid Romanistik und Amerikanistik studiert. Sie ist assoziiertes Mitglied der Nachwuchsforschungs- gruppe „Karibik-Nordamerika und zurück: Transkulturationsprozesse in Litera- tur, Populärkultur und Neuen Medien“ der Transkulturellen Studien an der Universität Heidelberg und schloss ihre Promotion an der Neuphilologischen Fakultät im Dezember 2015 ab. In den Jahren 2011 und 2013 war sie als Gastwis- senschaftlerin an der Universität Hermanos Saiz Montes de Oca (Pinar del Rio, Kuba) sowie am Cuban Research Institute der Florida International University in Miami, USA. Seit 2014 ist sie als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Philoso- phischen Fakultät der Universität Mannheim tätig. Die vorliegende Dissertation wurde im Wintersemester 2015 an der Neuphilolo- gischen Fakultät der Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg unter dem Titel „Sprache - Essen - Identität: Selbstvergewisserung und kulturelle Transformati- on in U.S.-kubanischer Literatur der Gegenwart“ eingereicht und verteidigt. Ich möchte Herrn Professor Gerhard Poppenberg danken, der nach dem Tode von Frau Gewecke auf eine so selbstverständliche und unkomplizierte Art und Weise die Betreuung meiner Doktorarbeit als Zweitgutachter über- nommen hat. In unserer Forschungsgruppe gelang uns nicht nur ein bestän- diger inspirierender wissenschaftlicher Austausch zu dem breiten Themenfeld Karibik und Diaspora, sondern auch die unermüdliche gegenseitige Aufmunte- rung und Unterstützung in schwierigen Phasen. Meine Erfahrungen und Begegnungen während zweier Forschungsaufent- halte in Kuba und den USA hatten maßgeblichen Einfluss auf den Inhalt dieser Arbeit.     C olumbia U niversity RECORD November 9, 2001 3 OFF CAMPUS A Return to Cuba Helps Eduardo Machado Find Home and Inspiration BY KRISTIN STERLING “Did they throw me out, or did I walk away from my country?” This question plagues many Cuban exiles and resonates throughout Eduardo Machado’s “Havana is Waiting.” The play is a semi-autobio- graphical drama inspired by Machado’s own emotion-filled return to Cuba in 1999. At the age of nine, Machado’s parents put him and his younger brother on a “Peter Pan” flight to the U.S., a decision that Machado, like many others, has questioned and resented all of his life. Over 13,000 Cuban children made similar flights during the early 1960s, as their parents feared Communist indoctrination and the revolutionary government under Fidel Castro. Mellon Foundation and Theatre Communications Group (TCG). In the six rounds of the program, over $9 million in two-year grants have been awarded to 126 theatres in support of three grant categories. In Future Leaders Mentorships, early-career theatre professionals are mentored by established leaders in the theatre field. In Future Leaders International Fellowships, theatre professionals from other countries spend six months in residence at a theatre in the United States. DOI: https://doi.org/10.25222/larr.75 LITERATURE AND CULTURAL STUDIES At the Postnational Table: Food, Fantasy, and Fetishism in Tastes Like Cuba by Eduardo Machado Nieves Pascual Soler University of Jaén, ES [email protected] This article explores the transition from nationalism to postnationalism through food in Tastes Like Cuba: An Exile’s Hunger for Home (2007), by playwright Eduardo Machado. The framework used is Sigmund Freudʼs narrative of the Oedipus complex. I suggest that the exilic condition of Oedipus and his rebellious behavior make the Oedipal narrative a useful tool for approaching the postnational rejection of the oppressive nature of the nation. I replace the phallus as the source of pleasure with food, and argue that the memories that ensure the continuity of the nation are largely alimentary. A study of what Eduardo Machado eats or refuses to eat to keep recognizing himself as Cuban leads me to explore ways in which the nation shapes subjectivity and the subject informs the postnation, adding to the scholarship on Cuban American literature. Este artículo explora la transición del modelo nacionalista al postnacionalista en Tastes Like Cuba: An Exileʼs Hunger for Home (2007) del escritor cubano Eduardo Machado. El marco teórico es el de la narración del complejo de Edipo según Sigmund Freud. Se sugiere que la condición de exilio de Edipo, así como su rebeldía hacen de esta narración una herramienta útil para analizar el rechazo postnacionalista de la naturaleza opresiva de la nación.
