I wanted to direct Newsies for a number of reasons. This musical truly has it all — an infectious score by Alan Menken, strong lyrics by Jack Feldman and an excellent book by Harvey Fierstein. It’s a gold standard musical for our time. Central to me is that Newsies has a powerful message for today’s young crusaders. Newsies were anywhere from nine to 17 years old.

  • A Return to Cuba Helps Eduardo Machado Find Home and Inspiration
C olumbia U niversity RECORD November 9, 2001 3 OFF CAMPUS A Return to Cuba Helps Eduardo Machado Find Home and Inspiration BY KRISTIN STERLING “Did they throw me out, or did I walk away from my country?” This question plagues many Cuban exiles and resonates throughout Eduardo Machado’s “Havana is Waiting.” The play is a semi-autobio- graphical drama inspired by Machado’s own emotion-filled return to Cuba in 1999. At the age of nine, Machado’s parents put him and his younger brother on a “Peter Pan” flight to the U.S., a decision that Machado, like many others, has questioned and resented all of his life. Over 13,000 Cuban children made similar flights during the early 1960s, as their parents feared Communist indoctrination and the revolutionary government under Fidel Castro. Machado, an associate profes- sor in the Theatre Arts Division of the School of the Arts, describes his return to Cuba as “the most important experience of my adult life… that trip opened up a whole world of things that I yearn for.” PHOTO BY CAROL ROSEGG, COURTESY OF SPRINGER/CHICOINE PUBLIC RELATIONS Machado reveals much of him- Felix Solis, left, Bruce MacVittie, center, and Ed Vassalo, right, take a journey home in Eduardo Machado’s play, “Havana is Waiting.” The self in this very personal, production will run through Dec. 31 at the Cherry Lane Theatre. thoughtful and political work. • Beetlejuice the Musical
Beetlejuice the Musical Death is a part of life, and (mostly) for everyone except the Jumper, people experience it permanently at some point- Ooh, what’s this? Ha! Begging your pardon! Sorry to barge in! Yeah, I don’t care for all that bullshit, so, Jumper, do you wanna finally die? I mean if you want to be boring, I guess you could be a breather, but death is a whole lot more fun than that. If you’re going to be coming around here for ten years, you should probably take this to make it more interesting! +1000 CP Age and Gender Who cares! I mean honestly, I don’t care what you are! Pick any age or gender, hell pick even any sexual orientation or race, and maybe even go crazy choosing a religion. It’s your choice pal! Location and Time You start at the funeral of one Emily Deetz, with a grieving daughter who feels invisible and a daddy in denial. You may or may not be invited, but hey, who cares! Yes, this means that you can prevent the Maitlands’ deaths (who cares about their character development). Origins Are you a breather or a cool dude? Any Origin may be a Drop-In. Weird Adult (Breather) You’re a functioning adult, at least somewhat. You probably don’t believe in all that hocus pocus about ghosts, but you might have a guru named Otho. Namaste, you freakin’ poser. Gothy Teen (Breather) You may or may not have recently lost a parent, but you certainly obsess over death a lot.

  • Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press 2015
Jan 15 #1 Scuttlebutt from the Spermaceti Press Sherlockians (and Holmesians) gathered in New York to celebrate the Great Detective's 161st birthday during the long weekend from Jan. 7 to Jan. 11. The festivities began with the traditional ASH Wednesday dinner sponsored by The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes at Annie Moore's, and continued with the Christopher Morley Walk led by Jim Cox and Dore Nash on Thursday morn- ing, followed by the usual lunch at McSorley's. The Baker Street Irregulars' Distinguished Speaker at the Midtown Executive Club on Thursday evening was Alan Bradley, co-author of MS. HOLMES OF BAKER STREET (2004), and author of the award-winning "Flavia de Luce" series; the title of his talk was "Ha! The Stars Are Out and the Wind Has Fallen" (his paper will be published in the next issue of The Baker Street Journal). The William Gillette Luncheon at Moran's Restaurant was well attended, as always, and the Friends of Bogie's at Baker Street (Paul Singleton and An- drew Joffe) entertained the audience with an updated version of "The Sher- lock Holmes Cable Network" (2000). The luncheon also was the occasion for Al Gregory's presentation of the annual Jan Whimsey Award (named in memory of his wife Jan Stauber), which honors the most whimsical piece in The Ser- pentine Muse last year: the winner (Jenn Eaker) received a certificate and a check for the Canonical sum of $221.17. And Otto Penzler's traditional open house at the Mysterious Bookshop provided the usual opportunities to browse and buy.
