THE WORLD OF TWO: KATHERINE MANSFIELD AND J. M. MURRY, 1911-19 1. Confidence (1880), James's fifth novel. 2. Presumably that edited by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (1900). The Oxford Book of French Verse (1907) was compiled by St John Lucas. 3. Leon Bloy (1846-1917), French novelist and mystical thinker. 4. Signature was a short-lived periodical (1915) in which, in D. H. Lawrence's words, he was to do the 'preaching', Murry to propound his 'ideas on freedom for the individual soul' and KM to write her 'little satirical sketches'. KM is referring here to the confessional style of Murry and Lawrence. This is the first of many occasions on which KM proved herself a devastating critic of Murry's work. 5. Thefauviste painter J. The latter remark sheds light on KM's conception of the short story as something which would have a lyric concentration and symbolist power akin to that of T. S. Eliot's poetry. 9. The Hon. In such a moment some kind of fusion occurs between the self and the object contemplated, while, paradoxically, the self has at the same time a heightened sense both of its own identity and of the inalienable otherness of the object perceived. 11. The Athenaeum was, as Anthony Alpers puts it, a 'languishing' weekly when Murry took over. The philanthrop ist Arnold Rowntree wanted to re-establish the paper to serve a new, post-war society: it was to be a 'Journal of Literature, Science, the Fine Arts, Music and Drama'. 2. Cf. Murry in a letter of 22 November 1919, in which he comments that KM, unlike Virginia Woolf, 'relates novels to life. Virginia can't abide that.' 3. 'Esther Waters Revisited', Athenaeum, 6 Aug 1920 (repr. in pt n of this chapter). The final image is from As You Like It (n. vii. 39-40). 4. Those letters wh ich bear directly on a review KM was writing are printed with the review in the second section of this chapter. 5. Chekhov's letters, tr. by the Russian emigre S. S. Koteliansky, aided by KM, were published in the Athenaeum from April to October 1919. They were originally to have been published as a book, but Constance Garnett beat Koteliansky and KM to press with her volume The Letters of Anton Chekhov to his Family and Friends in early 1920. See KM' s letter of 21 August 1919 to Koteliansky for the influence on her of Chekhov's life and thought. She characterises his letters as 'this treasure - at the wharf only not unloaded' - a treasure which would revive the jaded English literary world (British Library MS 48970). 6. Sydney Waterlow, a cousin of KM's who had once proposed to Virginia Woolf. 7. An essay on Georges Duhamel (1884--1966), published in the Athenaeum. 8. Murry had become friendly with Walter de la Mare at this time, and KM refers to hirn affectionately in later letters. 9. KM's commentary is on Murry's book The Evolution of an Intellectual, a collection of essays and articles published in 1920. 10. Murry's note in LJMM runs, 'A review of Mr Festing Jones's Life of Samuel Butler, by Bernard Shaw, in The Manchester Guardian.' Murry would have sent the paper out to KM at Ospedaletti. 11. So preposterous that he'd perfectly understand it if her father —well, whatever her father chose to do he'd perfectly understand. In fact, nothing short of desperation, nothing short of the fact that this was positively his last day in England for God knows how long, would have screwed him up to it. And even now... He chose a tie out of the chest of drawers, a blue and cream check tie, and sat on the side of his bed. Supposing she replied, "What impertinence!" would he be surprised? Not in the least, he decided, turning up his soft collar and turning it down over the tie. He expected her to say someth ing like that. He didn't see, if he looked at the affair dead soberly, what else she could say. Here he was! And nervously he tied a bow in front of the mirror, jammed his hair down with both hands, pulled out the flaps of his jacket pockets. Making betwe en 500 and 600 pounds a year on a fruit farm in —of all places—Rhodesia. No capital. Not a penny coming to him. No chance of his income increasing for at least four years. As for looks and all that sort of thing, he was completely out of the running. He cou ldn't even boast of top-hole health, for the East Africa business had knocked him out so thoroughly that he'd had to take six months' leave.

    DAVID TROTTER Modernism Reloaded: The Fiction of Katherine Mansfield It’s very largely as a Modernist that we now know Katherine Mansfield. Successive waves of new emphasis in the study of literary Modernism have brought her work ever closer to the centre of current understandings of how, when, where, and why this decisive movement arose, and of what it can be said to have accomplished at its most radical. Gender and sexual politics, the interaction of metropolis and colony, periodical networks: whichever way you look, the new emphasis fits.1 No wonder Mansfield has recently been hailed as Modernism’s “most iconic, most representative writer.”2 The aim of this essay is to bring a further perspective in Modernist studies to bear on Mansfield’s fiction, in order primarily to illuminate the fiction, but also, it may be, the perspective. The one I have in mind is that provided in broad outline by enquiries into the historical sequence which leads from nineteenth- century sciences of energy to twentieth-century sciences of information. Meijer, Literature of the Low Countries vii Preface In any definition of terms, Dutch literature must be taken to mean all literature written in Dutch, thus excluding literature in Frisian, even though Friesland is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in the same way as literature in Welsh would be excluded from a history of English literature. Similarly, literature in Afrikaans (South African Dutch) falls outside the scope of this book, as Afrikaans from the moment of its birth out of seventeenth-century Dutch grew up independently and must be regarded as a language in its own right. Dutch literature, then, is the literature written in Dutch as spoken in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the so-called Flemish part of the Kingdom of Belgium, that is the area north of the linguistic frontier which runs east-west through Belgium passing slightly south of Brussels. For the modern period this definition is clear anough, but for former times it needs some explanation. What do we mean, for example, when we use the term ‘Dutch’ for the medieval period? In the Middle Ages there was no standard Dutch language, and when the term ‘Dutch’ is used in a medieval context it is a kind of collective word indicating a number of different but closely related Frankish dialects.
