The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arborescent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of the South African National Biodiversity Institute is based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It symbol- ises the commitment of the Institute to champion the exploration, conservation, sustainable use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all people. Summary: A new species of Aloe L., Aloe sharoniae belong to one of the most cryptic of the formal N.R.Crouch & Gideon F.Sm., is recognised from groups recognized in this diverse genus – which northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and includes the true grass aloes and leptoaloes Swaziland. This taxon was previously known as (Smith, 2003; Van Jaarsveld & Van Wyk, 2006; A. cooperi Baker subsp. pulchra Glen & Klopper & Smith, 2010; Smith & Crouch, 2010). D.S.Hardy but is here elevated to the rank of Shortly after submitting the description of species. From A. cooperi Baker it differs in having A. nicholsii Gideon F.Sm. & N.R.Crouch for re- leaves that are consistently devoid of teeth in the view, that was subsequently published in this 2 upper /3 of its leaf margins and basally covered journal (Smith & Crouch, 2010), a further inter- below with white, tuberculate maculations. -

In this study, we assessed the species-level discriminatory power of the standard (rbcLa + matK) and complementary barcodes ITS1 and trnH-psbA within the subfamily Alooideae (Asphodelaceae), a large, recent plant radiation whose species are important in horticulture yet are threatened. Alooideae has its centre of endemism in southern Africa with some outlier species occurring elsewhere in Africa and Madagascar. We sampled 360 specimens representing 235 species within all 11 genera of the subfamily. Applying three distance-based methods, all markers perform poorly for our combined dataset with the highest proportion of correct species-level specimen identifications of 30% found for ITS1. -

Preventing Establishment: An Inventory of Introduced Plants in Puerto Villamil, Isabela Island, Galapagos Anne Gue´zou1, Paola Pozo1, Christopher Buddenhagen1,2* 1 Charles Darwin Research Station, Puerto Ayora, Galapagos, Ecuador, 2 Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawai, United States of America As part of an island-wide project to identify and eradicate potentially invasive plant species before they become established, a program of inventories is being carried out in the urban and agricultural zones of the four inhabited islands in Galapagos. This study reports the results of the inventory from Puerto Villamil, a coastal village representing the urban zone of Isabela Island. We visited all 1193 village properties to record the presence of the introduced plants. In addition, information was collected from half of the properties to determine evidence for potential invasiveness of the plant species. We recorded 261 vascular taxa, 13 of which were new records for Galapagos. Most of the species were intentionally grown (cultivated) (73.3%) and used principally as ornamentals. The most frequent taxa we encountered were Cocos nucifera (coconut tree) (22.1%) as a cultivated plant and Paspalum vaginatum (salt water couch) (13.2%) as a non cultivated plant. In addition 39 taxa were naturalized. On the basis of the invasiveness study, we recommend five species for eradication (Abutilon dianthum, Datura inoxia, Datura metel, Senna alata and Solanum capsicoides), one species for hybridization studies (Opuntia ficus-indica) and three species for control (Furcraea hexapetala, Leucaena leucocephala and Paspalum vaginatum). Isoorientin is a common constituent of Flavonoid tropical and sub-tropical species of Aloe, whereas isovitexin is restricted to a few southern Isoorientin African species. Isoorientin and isovitexin co-occur in the southern African maculate Isovitexin species Aloe parvibracteata, and the disjunct West African maculate species, Aloe macro- Taxonomy carpa. This is the first report of isoorientin and isovitexin in maculate species of Aloe; the presence of flavonoids in section Pictae is of taxonomic interest.
