DESERT WAR PART THREE: BREVITY, SKORPION & BATTLEAXE OPERATION BREVITY MAY 15 – 16 1941 Operation Sonnenblume had seen Rommel rapidly drive the distracted and over-stretched British and Commonwealth forces in Cyrenaica back across the Egyptian border. Although the battlefront now lay in the border area, the port city of Tobruk - 100 miles inside Libya - had resisted the Axis advance, and its substantial Australian and British garrison of around 27,000 troops constituted a significant threat to Rommel's lengthy supply chain. He therefore committed his main strength to besieging the city, leaving the front line only thinly held. Conceived by the Commander-in-Chief of the British Middle East Command, General Archibald Wavell, Operation Brevity was a limited Allied offensive conducted in mid-May 1941. Brevity was intended to be a rapid blow against weak Axis front-line forces in the Sollum - Capuzzo - Bardia area of the border between Egypt and Libya. Operation Brevity's main objectives were to gain territory from which to launch a further planned offensive toward the besieged Tobruk, and the depletion of German and Italian forces in the region. With limited battle-ready units to draw on in the wake of Rommel's recent successes, on May 15 Brigadier William Gott, with the 22nd Guards Brigade and elements of the 7th Armoured Division attacked in three columns. The Royal Air Force allocated all available fighters and a small force of bombers to the operation. The strategically important Halfaya Pass was taken against stiff Italian opposition. Reaching the top of the Halfaya Pass, the 22nd Guards Brigade came under heavy fire from an Italian Bersaglieri (Marksmen) infantry company, supported by anti-tank guns, under the command of Colonel Ugo Montemurro. -

Accordingly, all strategies were Hitler’s. Germany was fighting on four fronts by this time: the west, Italy, Poland and the Balkans. The last two were nominally one front, but, because the two Soviet drives were basically independent, they had to be treated separately. Hitler’s strategy, such as it was, was one of desperation and wishful thinking. He was convinced that the Anglo-American alliance with the Soviets could not endure. Subsequent events proved him right. What he failed to recognize was that the mutual hatred they bore for Nazism was sufficient to hold the alliance together for the duration of the war. Hitler seemed to have few illusions about Germany’s chances to win the war. He now wanted to settle for destroying Communism. Hitler convinced himself that he could work out an alliance with the Anglo- Americans and the three would then crush the Bolshevik menace. To “encourage” the British and American governments to see things his way, Hitler felt he needed a major victory in the west. He may not have seriously believed he could root the western Allies, but he did expect to deliver a blow that would seriously upset the western timetable. He also hoped to so upset morale at home in the western alliance that the German Panzer V Panther on the Eastern Front, 1944. -

There we have repulsed many attacks, causing the enemy heavy losses and taking many prisoners. That is how the matter stands in Egypt and on the Libyan front.” Winston Churchill, 27th April 1941 This add-on for The Few game presents the opportunity for players to play another campaign after, or instead, the Battle of Britain. It presents new aircraft (because there were different planes in use) and missions, as well as entirely different setting and stories. All rules from the original game also apply for the new campaign. The campaign starts in besieged Tobruk. Pilots fly desperate missions against over- whelming odds. Players can create new pilots, who are assigned to this battlefield, or can use their old pilots from the Battle of Britain campaign, if they are still alive or were for example discharged for wounds and now are re-activated, or got away from prison camp. Those veterans could be, after the end of Axis offensive over Bri- tain, pulled from their old units and reassigned to 73 Squadron which is leaving for North African shores. A few of the German squadrons which fought over rainy Albion were also relocated to Tobruk. -

However, it left them in possession of the strategically important Halfaya Pass, the gateway to Egypt. In addition, British forces were harassing the German defenders with mobile columns to the South. German General Rommel recognized the need to recapture this terrain in order to stabilize the front. Still fearing the British infantry tank, Matilda, an under gunned, ponderous, mobile fortification, Rommel launched three panzer battalions plus supporting units to sweep the British from the field. The offensive was code named, "Unternehmen Skorpion," ultimately known to the Allies as Operation Skorpion. The battle was brief and violent. Although there was a significant disparity in firepower, the Germans had a definite Achilles heel. Can the Germans accomplish their goals of capturing the Halfaya Pass and clearing its southern approaches before their supplies are exhausted, particularly the remainder of their fuel allotment? Operation Skorpion is a relatively short, fast moving game that introduces a new fog of war game system. Opposing strength is unknown until units enter combat. Once revealed, those combat values can continue to fluctuate during the course of the game based on judicious use of mobile supply units, which can distribute and absorb Allocation Points. -

FLORIAN SCHWIEGER “Loyalty gleaming, guns screaming”: William T. Vollmann’s Europe Central and the Memory of Stalingrad I have no intentions of killing myself for this Bohemian Corporal —Friedrich Paulus n the early morning hours of November 23rd 1942 a small detachment of Russian tanks under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel G.N. Filippov rolled over the Don Bridge at Kalach. In the darkness of this late November morning,I the German guards, who were under explicit orders to destroy the bridge in the event of enemy contact, mistook the Russian armor for their own. As they realized their fateful mistake it was too late. After a short skirmish the Soviet 26th Tank Corps captured the bridge and severed the aorta of the German supply lines at the Stalingrad front. A few hours later, Filippov’s men linked up with the 14th Independent Tank Brigade and completed the encirclement of twenty-two German divisions, including the entire 6th Army, in Stalingrad only four days after the start of Operation Uran. On December 5th 1942, sixteen days after the first Soviet tanks broke through the German flanks brushing aside the Rumanian and Italian relief forces, Reichspropagandaminister Joseph Goebbels addressed the nation at the Sportpalast in Berlin. In an attempt to reassure the German public of the inevitable victory on the eastern front he declared that “we are absolutely convinced that in Russia the better man, the better race, the better political philosophy, and the better leadership will win the ultimate victory, as they always have throughout the history of the world.”1 Goebbels’ Sportpalast address summons the full plethora of the Nazi propaganda machine, claiming that German victory is inevitable on the grounds of racial, military, and political superiority. -

The game begins in December 1994 when the Russian CREditS armed forces haphazardly invaded Chechnya. Unpopular among the Russian people and Design: Javier Romero even the Russian armed forces themselves, this lackluster invasion (despite overwhelming Developer: Eric R. Harvey materiel and manpower) quickly degenerated into a quagmire. Despite initial predictions that the campaign would be quick and surgical, the appalling performance of the Russian Managing Developer: Doug Johnson military proved to be an embarrassment to the Yeltsin government, and it also revealed Playtesters: Damián Giménez, Ty Bomba, JD serious weaknesses in Soviet-era technology, doctrine, and morale.
