The Adventure Begins…

Prissy and Missy were the best of friends. Prissy and Missy were a set of twins. They were two of the sweetest sisters who got along, ever since the day they were born.

On this very special night, Prissy and Missy experienced the same dream. Thoughts of galaxies, solar systems and the world beyond enraptured their sleep with these themes.

They visualized a multicolored starship. It was purple, green and blue, with psychedelic variations and vibrant rainbow hues.

Illustrator’s Interpretation

The captain of the ship shouted, “Hurry girls, let’s go! Another world awaits us. It’s found above and not below. The full moon is shining brightly, a sweet reflection from the sun. A familiar sight for quick direction, we’ll wave “Hello” and have some fun!

Sleepy eyed Missy murmured… “Sister, do you think this can be real? Tell me how you feel? Is this a figment from our contagious imaginations? Or have our thoughts truly come alive from happy galactic contemplation!?”

Again the Alien Captain shouted, “No need to talk or chat! There will be plenty of time for that! Then again, when I show you moon rock, shooting stars, Black Holes, Planet Mars and ethers, I’ll bet you a zillion astro dollars, your eyes will be super wide with fantastic surprise and your voices….completely speechless! Hurry now! Let’s go! Away from the Mountains of the Poconos!”

So Prissy and Missy dashed from their room to the site of the Mother ship connection. The Captain granted the sisters ingress with his power to suspend gravitation.

The girls were nestled in their circular window seats by a Robot named Desaki. He was programmed to do all sorts of things, but loved eating Sushi and practicing Karate!

Prissy asked, “Captain, are there fish in outer space?” He replied, “During this 21st century it’s been discovered, that plankton has certainly established its place, being carried there by currents from Earth’s pervasive atmosphere.

Since Desaki is a Roboticus without a human esophagus, a hologram provides the images to his face, while hypnosis provides the experience of Sushi taste!

“Here we go! Hang on girls! Time for lift off, into another world!” Prissy and Missy took a deep breath, held on tightly and calmed their chests!

The Captain and Crew flew above the Ionosphere, leaving the earth and sky behind, soaring away from earth’s hemisphere. Prissy shouted, “Oh!” Missy, exclaimed “Dear!”

The Heavens came into view within the twinkling of an eye. So majestic was the sight, Prissy and Missy cried. Prissy said, “My heart is beating fast, I’m excited with great joy! Our thoughts and dreams have really come true. What an honor to be privy on this planetary tour!”

Missy said, “Sister! Wow Wee! Wow Wee! Those stars are shaped like a palace! And by the way Sis, did you see, what I did? I think it was the Aurora Borealis!”

Ah! Said the Captain, “I’m glad you’re feeling fine. Bringing you sisters here is an exceptional pleasure of mine!” Desaki chimed in, “I’m never used to all of this. Whenever we come or go, I blow the Universe a loving kiss!” And remember… for Breakfast… we’re having hologram fish!

The sister’s eyes grew large and wide at the sight of magnificent splendor. Prissy and Missy in unison gushed, “Glorious! Majestic! Supercalifragilistic! To the Infinite Power of the Galactic Mystic, with humble adoring hearts…we surrender!”

Just then, the space craft encountered a meteor shower. Captain MaRocky knew just what to do. He engaged the invisible shield of protection, enabling the space ship to pass right through!

The frightened twin sisters sank to the floor, and gasped with quick sighs of relief! “Fear not!” The Captain suggested to them. “It’s quite safe to return to your seats.”

The girls took another look outside and recognized planet earth in the distance. Approximately one hundred and forty million miles away, was the home Prissy and Missy left to board this Spaceship.

Oh yes! Of course! They love Mother Earth, her flowers the birds and the bees. Land, water, fire, living things, air and trees…..but as passengers on board this Mother Ship Connection, in the realm of extraordinary space exploration, Prissy and Missy felt giddy and free!

The girls suddenly turned and shouted, “Look there! Look there! The fourth planet from our sun!” “That’s right!” Uttered Captain MaRocky. “It’s Mars and here we come!”

Missy said, “But Captain, what about sharing the lunar rocks?” The Captain responded, “Don’t worry child. I’ll show you some I’ve got hidden in my socks! I keep them for good luck, just in case my Starship should get stuck!”

They approached the Red Planet with caution and awe. Captain MaRocky and Robot Desaki chanted, “Prissy and Missy! Welcome to Mars!”

The sisters belted, “Journeying to this planet has given us such hope! We are fascinated by Science, regular visitors of the Smithsonian, Junior Members of NASA, and are faithful users of our Takahashi Telescopes!”

The Starship hovered over Mars, using an Ionic Engine. They scoured the landscape with binoculars, hoping to befriend “Spirit”, “Opportunity”, “Curiosity”, a “Martian” or a “Ninja!”

Captain MaRocky pensively commented, “Ahhh! Extra Terrestrial life would be exceptional to find. The discovery and communication of such was at the forefront of Dr. Carl Sagan, an Astronomer, Astrophysicist, Cosmologist, Author, and super duper eccentric, colleague of mine!”

He and fellow brethren, unboxed minded Stanley Kubrick, (A 2001 Space Odyssey) were great men, with outstanding thought lives, replete with the finest audacity! Their human contributions were admired around the world and shared. I’m sure, with us on planet Mars…Yes! Oh Yes! They would love to be here! May the Force be with you! My highly respected and beloved Comrades….Multi- Faceted Dr. Carl Sagan and Multi- Hyphenated Director Stanley Kubrick!”

The surface of Mars was dusty red, reminiscent of Sedona. Prissy said, “It’s exciting to know that Mars can compare with that exquisite city in Arizona!”

Missy added, “Speaking of Arizona where the Grand Canyon can be found, Mars has a similar landscape in spectacular places where giganticus shield craters and the deepest of valleys abound!

Rushing waters helped carve America’s Great Ravine, but collapsing mountains and meteorites pepper’s a vast portion of the Martian scene.”

Missy declared, “And we must remember “Phoenix”. A name derived meaning, “Victory from the Ash”. The United States sent Robots named “Phoenix”, “Viking”, “Maven”, and many more vehicles, for exploration of everything that Mars could offer man….especially, water!”

After this revelation of important knowledge, the sisters squealed, “Please! Oh Please! May we venture outside? All of our lives we’ve wanted to fly!”

Captain MaRocky responded, “The atmosphere of Mars is thin and complex. Ninety six percent carbon dioxide and lots of dust are in the mix. But today is bright, gorgeous and clear. In the distance we see towering Olympus Mons, discovered by Mariner 9, in the Twentieth Century of ’71.”

“Back to your question of wanting to fly, that’s another exciting reason I brought you on this ride. Seems we’ve got the entire planet, what more could we ask, and the dust storms have settled, so suit up, get ready and don’t forget your masks!”

Prissy and Missy squealed with delight! “For Heaven’s sake, what an unforgettable flight!” Robot Desaki said, “Prissy and Missy, here’s a point I must announce, you really won’t be flying. It’s more like a horizontal bungee cord bounce!”

In any case, although there’s no real “weather”, to our Starship Spacecraft, you sisters must be tethered. You won’t even feel your body’s weight. You’ll be light as a cache of Angora sweaters!

“Wow Wee!” “Wow Wee!” Intrigued Missy blurted out with glee! We’re ready to explore, what Mars has in store, for you Captain MaRocky, you Robot Desaki, my sister Prissy and me!

The spacecrafts hatch was opened. A mechanical sound went “Ka chunk”! Passengers and crew made their exit. The spool of unwinding scouting rope released 50 feet, and the electrical door hinge closed with …..Ka Thunk!”

Prissy chanted, “Ooo! I’m bouncing on thin air”. Missy replied, “Sister, I see mind boggling desolate beauty everywhere!”

Illustrator’s Interpretation

Captain MaRocky declared, “Look here! Look here! We’ve landed on a very large ledge in the heart of Mar’s Equator. But Robot Desaki, Prissy and Missy, please don’t venture out too far, or your triple twisted rope will become your elevator!”

Lo and behold the vast canyon system of Valles Marineris, greeted the group with Martian splendor, just east of the Region of Tharsis.

The sisters exclaimed, “It’s huge! It’s Intriguing, our hearts are melting…just look at what we’re seeing!”

We read you could fit the entire United States within this geo tectonic “crack”. It also spans twenty five hundred miles long and four miles deep!”

Desaki’s control panel in agreement went beep! Captain MaRocky responded, “Well! Well! Well! Prissy and Missy, Tell us now? What do you think about that?!”

Again, the sister’s eyes grew large and wide at the sight of magnificent splendor. Prissy and Missy in unison gushed, We think this!...“Glorious! Majestic! Supercalifragilistic! To the Infinite Power of the Galactic Mystic, with humble adoring hearts…we surrender!”

Illustrator’s Interpretation

“With a ph balance of seven”, Prissy said, “Scientists have revealed Mars may have water too, you know, indicating carrots and vegetables could grow… Regardless of the chemical perchlorate, native to this beautiful and exotic place!”

Illustrator’s Interpretation

The sisters chanted, “Ah! The breathtaking expanse of this incredible canyon! We wonder if there are stalactites, stalagmites and pools of H2O, among other hidden treasures, yet to be found, within underground Martian Cathedral Caverns!”

“Our beloved and precious Mommy, Karen Elise is quite fond of spelunking visitations. She enjoys going deep into our Earth, expanding her awe, stimulating ideas, and feeding her vivacious imagination...We love and thank you Mommy and Daddy! Wish you were here!”

Just minutes thereafter, Robot Desaki looked bewildered. He picked up binoculars strapped to his side, noticing an object that looked quite familiar. “My! My! My! I feel trembles in my hand! By golly, I think I see one of our oldest and dearest friends. My lovely “Spirit” out there, submerged within the sand!”

Desaki continued, “She and her amazing twin “Opportunity” were launched June 10, in the year 2003.

Spirit and Opportunity have extraordinary reputations back on Earth, with tasks to perform lots of Martian data collection and incredible picture taking work.”

“Spirit Landed on this fascinating planet, January 4th, in the year 2004. She labored diligently and excessively without ever becoming bored. In fact, Spirit was so successful she exceeded NASA’s expectations. Her life expectancy lasted far longer, than the original anticipated duration.”

Captain MaRocky reminisced, “After many years of dedicated service and multiple miraculous cleaning events, Spirits six alloy wheels could no longer maneuver her away from “Troy,” and out of her sand dune embedded trench.

The hearts of NASA’s scientist and staff were broken, completely broken in half. Sadness and gloom ruled that day, not even Opportunity could dig out helpless Spirit, she was on the other side of this equator, far, far, far away.

Her expedition is incredibly and indelibly marked in time and mankind’s history! The female gender has risen to the occasion once again, but my Robotic emotions all are all askew because she’s out there by herself, and I’m helpless to rescue our sand dune buried friend!

A fierce wind began to stir after such potent exchange and dynamic conversation. Suddenly, Captain MaRocky shouted, “Ahoy Mates! Return to Spacecraft now! My skin is beginning to itch profusely! A sign of an impending sand storm invasion!

Yes, gazillion grains of sand began to stir swiftly, so everyone reboarded the space craft quickly. The shaft of the door immediately shut. Missy said “Don’t worry. We won’t get stuck. Captain MaRocky always has his Moon Rock for Good Luck!”

The terrain of Mars began to change, no longer considered “Sweet home on the range”. It was almost impossible to see the Red Sky. Vision was obscured by the sand storm’s eye.

Captain MaRocky responded, “It’s time for lift off. Better leave right now, the grains are making it dark. Sand storm specks might clog my engine, and we need (unhindered hydraulic pressure)multiple sparks, for proper ascension!

The spacecrafts supersonic engine took them up! Up! Up! And Away! Then Captain MaRocky, Robot Desaki, Prissy and Missy waved farewell to the Red Planet Mars, hoping to return on another Sol day!

The journey back home was just as exciting! The galaxy was adorned with a star spangled banner of never before seen shapes, images, unspeakable colors and magnificent displays of glorious lightning.

Captain MaRocky shouted, “Brace your selves with all your might, we’ve got to duck and dodge an oncoming meteorite! There will be no collateral damage for us, even though my spacecrafts insurance is all paid up!

The ride within the starship became smooth as butter. Suddenly Prissy and Missy’s eyelids began to flutter. Peaceful exhaustion overcame the twins while still in flight. They felt dreamy eyed and sleepy, surrounded by ten thousand points of exquisite light.

Robot Desaki, in the midst of eating sushi and practicing Karate, exclaimed to Captain MaRocky, “Look! Captain, we’ve come in contact with the International Space Station. Although Prissy and Missy have fallen asleep, I’ll awaken them now for Martian decontamination!”

“Yes! Yes! Desaki, a splendid idea! I’ve already communicated with the Russians, the Americans, the Europeans and the Japanese. They are anxious to receive us. Yes, do that right now. Thank you and Please!”

I stumbled upon it quite accidently while enjoying Panini bread, sharp Gouda cheese, a little mustard, iced tea and a half pound of smoked turkey bologna! And the moon rock, well, it’s from the Earth’s Royal Moon. 10-4 Good Buddies! Time for us to leave right now. Hope to see you again, real soon!

Sleep began to creep once again, upon Prissy and Missy. Desaki the Robot picked each sister up, holding them close to his mechanical heart. Captain MaRocky shouted, Ahoy Mates! Ahoy! Our schedule demands we return to earth now, the darkness of hour still looms and Prissy and Missy must be returned to their room!

The giant magnet was disengaged. Captain MaRocky, Robot Desaki and the sisters were back on course and on their way! The brightness of the sun could be seen from afar. Bursts of dancing flames and solar flares bounced to and fro from the Morning Star.

Beneath the star ship an elliptical blue ball began to appear. “Look!” whispered Robot Desaki to Captain MaRocky, “The third planet from the sun! We are descending swiftly into her atmosphere and in a moment’s notice, will be suddenly there!”

But first, a rare sight of the purest of rainbows could easily be seen. It was a triple braided rainbow with astounding colors of brilliant platinum, angelic blue, and magnificent iridescent shades of pink, violet, gold and watermelon green! Dreamy eyed Prissy and Missy purred ”Ooooooooo!”

In the twinkling of a blinking eye, Captain MaRocky’s spacecraft dashed beneath earth’s starry sky. Everything was quiet, not a peep could be heard, except soft sounds of melodious tweets, serenading the crew by awakening birds.

The spacecraft landed in the girls back yard, where everything had begun. Remember the promises Captain MaRocky made, concerning planetary travel and having lots of fun? True! True! It all came true! As surely as the sky of Mars is red and the sky of Earth is blue! Everything the Good Captain said was real! True! True! It all came true!

With great care, Captain MaRocky and Robot Desaki tucked Prissy and Missy into bed, and planted a sweet and loving kiss upon their precious cat girl heads. Indicating forever friends and promising to return again.

NASA’s Maven Craft Beats India’s Mangalyaan in Space Race to Mars, however, India Satellite Mangalyaan Reaches Mars Orbit on First Try

September 2014- Two days before India hopes to become the first Asian nation to reach Mars, a U.S. spacecraft that set off almost two weeks later than the Indian mission entered the orbit of the red planet. The U.S.-based National Aeronautics and Space Administration said in a statement that its Maven (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) orbiter successfully entered Martian orbit late Sunday. “NASA has a long history of scientific discovery at Mars and the safe arrival of Maven opens another chapter,” John Grunsfeld, astronaut and associate administrator of the NASA Science Mission Directorate said in a statement from the agency’s headquarters in Washington D.C. NASA launched the $671 million Maven mission on Nov. 18, 2013 from Cape Canaveral, the 10th U.S. mission sent to orbit Mars. Three earlier launches of U.S. spacecraft bound for Mars failed.“Maven will complement NASA’s other Martian robotic explorers–and those of our partners around the globe–to answer some fundamental questions about Mars and life beyond Earth,” Mr. Grunsfeld added. On Monday, scientists from the Indian Space Research Organization congratulated their peers at NASA on Twitter. Credit: The Wall Street Journal India

On the contrary, India put a satellite into Mars orbit early Wednesday, the only nation to have done so on a maiden voyage and the first in Asia to reach the red planet. As the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi looked on, space scientists at mission control in Bangalore, India’s tech capital, announced that the Mangalyaan orbiter had entered Mars orbit after a 10-month voyage from Earth. Mangalyaan, Hindi for Mars craft, cost $74 million to send into space, making it by far the cheapest of recent missions to Mars. The U.S. spent $671 million getting its Maven satellite to Mars orbit, where it arrived late Sunday. Mr. Modi boasted in June that India had spent less than Hollywood had on producing the film “Gravity” to reach the red planet. On Wednesday, Mr. Modi, wearing a bright red jacket, hugged Koppillil Radhakrishnan chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, before addressing ISRO scientists in Hindi and English. “History has been created today, we have dared to reach out into the unknown and have achieved the near impossible,” Mr. Modi said. “We have gone beyond the boundaries of human enterprise and imagination. We have navigated our spacecraft through a route known to very few,” the prime minister added.

India now joins a small club of nations — the U.S., Russia and those in the European Space Agency – to have mastered interplanetary travel, giving it bragging rights over Asian rivals China and Japan whose attempts to get to Mars failed. “Domestically this will boost the morale of the people that India has gained tremendous economic and technical development and is on the way pretty fast to becoming a developed country,” said Ram Jakhu, a professor at the Institute of Air and Space Law at McGill University in Canada. “Externally, India will have its head held high to say that it is capable of such a complex task.” Credit: The Wall Street Journal India

Cleaning Events: A cleaning event is a phenomenon whereby dust is removed from solar panels, particularly ones on Mars, by the action of wind. The term cleaning event is used on several NASA webpages; generally the term is used in reference to the fact that Martian winds have blown dust clear of the solar panels of probes on Mars increasing their energy output.

President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery. Hobble Space Telescope: Is a space telescope that was launched into low Earth orbit in 1990 and remains in operation. With a 2.4-meter (7.9 ft) mirror, Hubble's four main instruments observe in the near ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared spectra. The telescope is named after the astronomer Edwin Hubble. Meteor shower: A meteor shower is a celestial event in which a number of meteors are observed to radiate, or originate, from one point in the night sky. These meteors are caused by streams of cosmic debris called meteoroids entering Earth's atmosphere at extremely high speeds on parallel trajectories. Olympus Mons: A volcano, about 25 km (16 mi) high, on Mars. It is the highest known mountain in the solar system. (Latin for Mount Olympus) is a large shield volcano on the planet Mars. By one measure, it has a height of nearly 22 km (14 mi).[3] Olympus Mons stands almost three times as tall as Mount Everest's height above sea level. It is the youngest of the large volcanoes on Mars, having formed during Mars's Amazonian Period. Solar Flares: A solar flare is a sudden flash of brightness observed over the Sun's surface or the solar limb, which is interpreted as a large energy release of up to 6 × 1025 joules of energy (about a sixth of the total energy output of the Sun each second or 160,000,000,000 megatons of TNT equivalent, over 25,000 times more energy than released from the impact of Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9 with Jupiter). Takahashi Telescope: Takahashi Seisakusho (TAK) has been a pioneer in the telescoping community since 1967, when they produced their first Takahashi telescope. Takahashi Seisakusho of Tokyo, Japan has been producing fluorite apochromatic refracting telescopes since they introduced the 90mm f/10 FC-90 Takahashi telescope in 1979. This revolutionized amateur astronomy as the world’s first fluorite apochromatic telescope in regular production. Viking: The Viking Mars mission was performed by two spacecraft, Viking 1 and Viking 2, launched within a couple of weeks of each other. Each spacecraft consisted of an orbiter and a lander, which traveled attached together for nearly a year to reach Mars orbit. The orbiters then began taking pictures of the Martian surface, from which a landing site was selected. The landers then separated from the orbiters and soft landed. The orbiters continued imaging and, between Viking 1 and Viking 2, imaged the entire planet at what was then high resolution. The results from the Viking experiments revolutionized our view of Mars. Volcanoes, lava plains, immense canyons, cratered areas, wind-formed features, and evidence of surface water were seen in the Orbiter images. The planet was found to be divided into two main regions, northern low plains and southern cratered highlands. Superimposed on these regions are the Tharsis and Elysium bulges, which are high-standing volcanic areas, and Valles Marineris, a system of giant canyons near the equator. The surface material at both landing sites was found to be an iron-rich clay. Measured temperatures ranged from 150 to 250 K, with a variation over a given day of 35 to 50 K. Seasonal dust storms, pressure changes, and

Karen Elise Wormack was born in Newark, New Jersey, (USA) however, she has resided in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania for many years. Her formative education was received in Washington, DC.
