As an art form, film has inherent value in: the richness of the human experience captured in it that is shared by its audience; the pleasure and insight the experience of viewing film brings to the audience; the creative integration of narrative, composition, perspective, and technique commanded by a team of producer(s), director(s), writers, actors, cameramen, film editors, set designers, etc.; the cultural moment it expresses and reveals as it is created and produced; and, its staying power as it is viewed, experienced and interpreted over time. Film enables this artistic and technical collective to transform moving image, creating symbols and exploring themes and myth which mirror other art forms, all of which depend upon technologies (writing, painting, design, musical instruments), although film’s scale and dependence upon complex and costly technologies are unique among artistic productions. Indeed, because the production of a major film is so expensive—some reaching to the $100 million mark and beyond—without the potential for mass appeal, commercial films are rarely produced, though smaller scale independent “art” films are not tied quite as much to this factor.

    Zimmerman, Paul D. "Blood and Water," Newsweek, 1 July 1974: 74. Critical Analysis The very name of the Roman Polanski's Chinatown is misleading. Without looking at a cast list or reading a review, you might even expect this to be another contribution to the massive martial arts genre, permeated with Oriental culture (or cliches thereof) and consisting of a string of endless fight scenes with some sort of loose plot leading from one to the next. Even upon digging as deep as the videocassette sleeve and discovering that Jack Nicholson plays an L.A. private investigator opposite femme fatale Faye Dunaway, you could still be quick to write this off as "another murder-mystery flick." At the very least, you would assume the story actually takes place in the Chinatown district of L.A. These, however, are just the first round of falsehoods and fallacies you would encounter in the course of viewing this deceptive 1974 film. Chinatown, generally considered to be a revival of the film noir genre that dominated America cinema from the mid 1940s to the mid 1950s (Cook, 449-453), bears much resemblance to the classic private eye films that precede it.     La Leyenda de MOVIELAND; Historia del Cine en el Estado de Durango (1897 - 2004) Antonio Avitia Hernández México, 2005 Introducción De manera casi tan fortuita y tan veleidosa como los criterios y las posibilidades económicas de las compañías cinematográficas, de los productores y de los directores de cine, algunos paisajes naturales del estado de Durango han sido seleccionados como escenario del rodaje de diversas películas. Hasta donde se ha podido investigar, entre los años de 1897 a 2004, se han filmado un total de doscientos setenta y ocho (278) cintas en la entidad. De éstas, treinta (30) son de la época del cine silente, producidas entre 1897 y 1936. Noventa y ocho (98) son de formato de ocho, super ocho y dieciséis milímetros, independientes, así como filmes documentales científicos, antropológicos y culturales, entre otros. Con respecto al cine industrial, ciento cincuenta (150) han sido los filmes rodados en territorio durangueño entre los años de 1954 a 2004. Los objetivos principales de esta historia del cine en Durango son: hacer el recuento cuantitativo y cronológico, la ubicación histórica, la reseña de las sinopsis argumentales, las fichas filmográficas y la relación de los personajes y locaciones sobresalientes de las películas rodadas en la entidad, así como describir la impresión que, en el imaginario colectivo regional, ha tenido el cinematógrafo, en tanto séptimo arte e industria cinematográfica. De manera colateral, hasta donde ha sido posible, se hace referencia a la suerte de los filmes en lo que respecta a su distribución. We study how specific social and cultural problems posed by Mexican immigration in the United States is addressed in the film written, directed and produced by Hispanics and other filmmakers of the Hollywood industry. Moreover we revise how Hispanics get involved in the industry: especially to three groups: first, the actors because they often play the role of Hispanic, or to see what role is given both social and starring (if it is considered a hero or a villain, and see what social level holds), second, the directors and third, the producers. 1.
