Holsworthy Livestock Market, New Market Road, Holsworthy, Devon, EX22 7FA 01409 253275 1633 SHEEP - 09.45 am 1119 PRIME LAMBS, 54 STORE LAMBS, 455 DRAFT EWES, 2 EWES & LAMBS Auctioneer: Russell Steer 07788 318701 455 DRAFT EWES & RAMS A strong trade for a decent number with all buyers bidding well resulting in an overall average of £73.11. Top money for Suffolk crosses from Mike & Ken Hill of Bideford at £100.50 and £96.50 followed by GM Goss of Iddlesleigh at £97 and the Pearce family of Monkokehampton at £96.50. Plenty of heavy ewes £90 plus, mules into the £80’s and Swales to £62. Cull rams to £91 for T Speight of Holsworthy Beacon. 1119 PRIME LAMBS A super entry both number and quality wise saw the best young sappy lamb, as always, in strong demand. 9 pens over £105 to a top of £106.80 for CJ Olde of Bude, followed by both Ivor and Wayne Stephens of Holsworthy and RJ Daniel of Monkleigh at £106. Smart 46kg lambs to £105.20 for both the Luxton family of Milton Dameral and PG Hobbs of Kilkhampton as 45kgs peaked at £105 for N & B Trewin of Bideford and £103 for Paul Vanstone of Bratton Clovelly. Best per kilo of 232 was shared between N & B Trewin with their 45kgs and G Grigg of Bideford with 43kgs at £101. 54 STORE LAMBS A strong trade and more needed to satisfy demand. DJ Braund of Morwenstow topped with 22 at £81.50 followed by J & L Crouch of Lifton at £76 and the average looks healthy at £69. 2 EWES & 3 LAMBS Just the one pen of 2 FM Suffolk ewes with 3 lambs sold very well at £165 or £66 per life for Duncan Stephens of Sampford Courtenay. 225 CALVES & STIRKS – 09.45 am Auctioneer: James Morrish 07814 010133 Another excellent entry of 225 which is part of over 1000 in the last 4 weeks saw a really exciting trade with an overall top call of £550 for the best of Blue stirks (6mths) up from Peter Denton of Lostwithiel with others from Messrs G & S Parsons of Otterham at £550. Messrs Bradley Partnership continue to sell smart Blue stirks well topping at £540 and the best Blue heifers from South Cornwall at £482. In the baby calf pens Messrs Petherick of Kilkhampton topped at £430 for Blue bulls with really young bulls from Geoff Pomeroy of Bradworthy at £335. Limousins topped at £338 for Geoff Endercott of Halwill whilst top 7 Angus bulls hit £340 & £325 for Peter Denton of Cornwall. Heifers saw plenty of interest with the best up and over £450. To be very honest, the heifers could have been £10 less than last weeks flyer but still very well sold. Best Holstein bulls hit £105 for Messrs Griffin of Whitstone with Messrs Isaac at £96, M & M Andrew & Son at £75 and Mary & Victor Brown of Stibb Cross at £70. 207 STORE CATTLE – 11 am Auctioneer: David Kivell 07899 960272 Several good consignments of well-presented cattle this week saw an entry of 86 younger stores. A consignment of 10-12mth Montbeliarde x bulls from Messrs Coaker of Bibbear rose to a top of £900 with others at £870 & £820. 13mth single suckled Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Vanstone of Lifton reached £875 (x5) dairy x British Blues from Phil Dack sold to £690. A Limousin heifer from Toby Cleave of Launcells sold to £625. A lovely run of single suckled Simmental steers from Shirley Griffiths sold to £815 with others at £805 and heifers from the same farm at £700. Messrs Walker of Bridgerule saw 20 11mth Holstein steers average £352 reaching £365 (all being purchased by the same farm). 111 Older stores Steers averaged £868 Heifers averaged £813 Forward stores again sold to a very strong trade with a top call of £1315 for 2 25mth British Blue steers from Messrs Bromell of Buckland Brewer. Another consignment of British Blues from Mr B Vickery of Bude saw stronger framed types to £1215 (21mth) with others to £1130 (21mth). Natives saw a very good trade with older Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Clease of Normansland at £1060. 16mth Aberdeen Angus steer from Graham Dart £980. 15mth single suckled steers from Ian Watson of Pyworthy £895 15mth dairy x Aberdeen Angus steers from Alan Wade of Bradworthy £895. The stronger heifers also sold well with a top call of £1125 for a 21mth British Blue from Rob Honey of Bridgerule. Single suckled Charolais heifers from Bob Cowell rose to £1080 with 3 other bunches over £970. Younger grazing continental steers and heifers saw most 15-18mth £800+ and more required as this flying trade continues! A busy Dry Cows £1500 £1122 ring of buyers saw the sale get off to a flying start In-calf Heifers due before December £1700 £1501 with a super consignment of freshly calved cows In-calf Heifers due December-February £2000 1135 and heifers from Peter Blake and family of the Served Heifers £920 £907 ‘Whitsand’ pedigree prefix from Torpoint. The Bulling Heifers £900 £836 first heifer in the ring topped the sale at £2,200 Yearlings £700 £523 for ‘Whitsand 929 Samovar Patty’ whilst yielding Calves £100 £100 41 Kgs. The Blake family also topped the cow Bulls £1400 £1375 section with ‘Whitsand Lineman Patty 3 GP81’ a freshly calved second calver yielding 41 Kgs and selling at £2,100. The Blake family’s consignment of cows and heifers averaged a very impressive £2,013! Messrs. Fishliegh from Winkleigh saw their fresh calvers sell to a strong trade topping at £1,900 for a May calved heifer, ‘Hawkleigh Jottan Cherry Red GP84’, with stale cows also selling well to a top of £1,680 for a December calved heifer, ‘Hawkleigh Kody Maisie VG86’. Regular consigners, Messrs. SR Gilbert & Son, from the ‘Bocaddon’ herd of Sheepwash, also enjoyed another strong trade with their consignment topping at £2,000 for a May calved third calver, ‘Bocaddon Algebra BT Annette’. The Cherry family from Bodmin had a good consignment of fresh and staler cows with their May calved heifer ‘Tappen Mozarella Willow’ selling at £1,800, with February calved heifer ‘Tappen Chad Tracy’ selling at £1,400. A run of dry cows from Mr R J Coaker of Torrington sold to a top of £1,350. Brian Bridgman and family sold a lovely run of grazing type cows due August-October which saw a top of £1,500 for a lovely stamp of cross- bred cow. The Bridgman family also sold a smart pedigree Hereford bull, ‘Westward Northerner’, at £1,400. A pedigree Limousin bull from Andrew Quance of Shebbear sold at £1,350. An excellent entry of in calf heifers saw a flying trade with Kevin Waldon from Umberleigh seeing his consignment top at £1,700. The decision by David and Sally Martin of Highampton to reduce the size of their herd brought 24 outstanding in calf heifers to the market. These pedigree cattle from their ‘Elmford’ herd attracted a great deal of interest. ‘Elmford Plover 231’ was due in December and was generously sold for the charity Centre for Cancer Care Exeter and topped the consignment by selling at £2,000, purchased by Len Bartlett from East Devon. Kivells were pleased to sell this animal free of commission and contributed an additional £100 to the charity which was further supplemented by donations from other bidders around the ring. We thank Len Bartlett for his purchase and support to such a worthwhile charity. David and Sally Martin also sold served heifers to £920 and bulling heifers to £900. A good run of yearling heifers from Ian Pugsley, Ashwater, met strong demand topping at £700. Entries to date include 50 fresh calvers, 20 in calf heifers, 20 bulling heifers, 15 exceptionally well bred pedigree Holstein heifers from international cow families including Lila Z, Marcia, Lausine, Gloria, Roxy with exceptional classified Dams from the ‘Loford’ herd.
