Introduction: Tharparkar District , is one of the districts of Sindh province in Pakistan. It is headquartered at Mithi. It Tharparkar: Population (estimated) has the lowest Human Development Index of all 1,251,455. districts in Sindh. The total area of the district is 19,638 square kilometers. Dhatki also known as Thari, which is a Number of Taluka /Tehsil 04 Rajasthani language, is common language, Number of union councils 44 which is also the majority language of Number of Villages 2,188 Number of Health Facilities: 37 neighboring Umerkot district. 1 - DHQ, 03 – THQ, 02RHC, 31 BHUs However Sindhi and Urdu are also spoken. The largest tribe in Tharparkar district is Meghwar Scheduled Castes. The population can be divided into three main classes, Rajputs, which include Muslim and Hindu tribes and aboriginal tribes. The large number of aboriginal Bhils are also settled in a huge population in Tharparkar district. Many nomadic Sindhi tribe inhabit the region. Thakurs mostly left Tharparkar and migrated in India after independence of Pakistan. Traditionaly the economy of the district (Fig 1) population depend on livestocks and agriculture. If a family requires cash for essential commodities or services, they trade-in or sell their animals to fulfil their requirements. The current Veternary epidemic has wiped out most of their livestock and ability to sustain. 3. Research Methodology and Sample design: It’s a multi cluster initial assessment using Key Informants Interview technique. Questionnaire adopted from Multi Cluster Initial Rapid Assessment Tool (MIRA) The randomize sample size of 330 villages calculated from the 4 Taluka, to give results within certain reliability limits (5-10% margin of error and 95% confidence interval). As per calculated sample at district level assessment covered 322villages. The data collected through 637 (322 Female & 315 Male) Key Informant Interviews (KIIs). st 4 1 Situation Analysis Survey Tharparkar Calamity – 2014 During the assessment, data is collected from all 44 UCs of 4 Taluka of Tharparkar district. (Fig 2) The rapid assessment conducted from 11 to 15 March 2014 in four Taluka of district Tharparkar indicates that 100percent population has been affected by the recent drought to some extent. During the assessment, numerators collected information from 637 key informants (322 males & 315 females) in 322 villages. Primary data collection was undertaken using representative sampling. (Fig 3) The sample comprised 61villages of Mithi Taluka, 120 villages of Diplo Taluka, 58 villages of Sample calculation of District Tharparkar Nagarparkar Taluka and 83 villages of Chachro Taluka Total Villages Sample Villages Taluka to achieve results within acceptable reliability Chachro 586 83 limits (5percent margin of error and 95percent confidence interval). The KIs were identified through Diplo 763 120 consultations with local community representatives. Mithi 499 61 Assessment teams were made up of four male Nagarparkar 340 58 enumerators, four female enumerators and one Total supervisor. However, male and female enumerators were involved in data collection from male & female 2188 322 KIs. The attached table illustrate the taluka viz sample distribuition. 4. Demographic Information: (Fig 4) The total number of affected population in the four tehsils of Tharparkar districts is 306,686. The largest numbers of affected population is in Chachro (105,898) followed by Mithi and Diplo. Smallest numbers of affected populations are in Nangarparkar. Population distribution is depicted in Fig.1 st 5 1 Situation Analysis Survey Tharparkar Calamity – 2014 Areas with greatest needs Assessment indicate that the highest number of affected populations were in Chachro. This is large arid and barren area and the population is widely disbursed. Therefore there is greater need for provision of assistance. Number of Key Informants Total number of Key informants for the Rapid Assessment was 637 (322 Females and 315 Males), Village and Gender wise they were distributed as follows (Figs.2a, 2b, 2c, 2d). General Observations: This document provides findings of a rapid assessment based on interviews with key informants (KIs) conducted by HANDS, from 11-14 March 2014, across 322 villages in Tharparkar districts. The metoffice stated the reason of calamity is untimely and low rainfall, have caused domestic crop failure, coupled with outbreak of sheep pox epidemic in small livestock is associated with food insecurity and high number of deaths including children in Tharparkar. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority reports since 1st Dec 2013 259,947 families are affected. The authority also reported, out of total 167 deathsfrom 06 health facilities of the district, 99 are children, 68 Adults. The survey identided the average household size found is 07, the male female ratio is 49:51. The survey villages found are 100% effected. Findings of the rapid assessment

Published: 16 November 2017 Abstract: Drought is a continuous process in Thar Desert, Pakistan. The extent of this drought needs to be assessed for future land use and adaptation. The effect of previous drought on vegetation cover of the Thar region was studied, through combined use of drought indices and geographic information (GIS) techniques. Five years (2002, 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2014) were selected to analyze the drought conditions and land use pattern of the Thar region. The drought indices used in this study included the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI). Images of past drought were compared with post-drought images of our targeted area and land use maps were developed for spatio-temporal analysis. The results of the study revealed that vegetation in Thar showed an improving trend from 2002 to 2011 and then declined from 2011 to 2014.

The almost doubling of population in the last two decades, coupled with low and variable rainfall, makes this one of the world’s most food-insecure regions. This paper examines satellite-based rainfall estimates and biomass data as a means to supplement sparsely distributed rainfall stations and to provide timely estimates of seasonal growth indicators in farmlands. Satellite dekadal and monthly rainfall estimates gave good correlations with ground station data, ranging from R = 0.75 to R = 0.97 over a 19-year period, with tendency for overestimation from the Tropical Rainfall Monitoring Mission (TRMM) and underestimation from Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Stations (CHIRPS) datasets. CHIRPS was selected for further modeling, as overestimation from TRMM implies the risk of under-predicting drought. The use of satellite rainfall products from CHIRPS was also essential for derivation of spatial estimates of phenological variables and rainfall criteria for comparison with normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)-based biomass productivity. This is because, in this arid region where drought is common and rainfall unpredictable, determination of phenological thresholds based on vegetation indices proved unreliable.

The Foundation has been instrumental in saving a large num- ber of heritage treasures and, as UNESCO team leader 2003- 2005, undertook the stabilization of the endangered Shish Ma- hal ceiling of the 16th c. Lahore Fort World Heritage Site. The Foundation publishes monographs and documents relat- ing to heritage and history of Pakistan as well as guides for her- itage safeguarding aspects. It has published a series of invento- ries of historic assets as National Register of Historic Places of Pakistan. In the National Register series, in addition to several Karachi documents listing over 600 historic buildings, docu- ments covering parts of Peshawar, the Siran Valley, Hazara District and Azad Kashmir have been published. Since 2000, its outreach arm KaravanPakistan has involved communities and youth in heritage safeguarding activities. Since 2005, as part of Heritage for Rehabilitation and Devel- opment Program, in partnership with Nokia and Nokia Sie- mens Network, Heritage Foundation has carried out work of rehabilitation of communities, particularly women, affected by the Earthquake 2005 in Northern Pakistan. A 3-year pro- gram, suppported by Scottish Government Fund, Glasgow University and Scottish Pakistan Association on disaster risk resistance (DRR) focusing on women is currently being car- ried out in the Siran Valley. The establishment of KIRAT, Kar- avanPakistan Institute for Research and Training in 2008 has helped in carrying out research and training on varied aspect of sustainable construction techniques drawn from traditional materials and vernacular methods.

Two districts in the province have Extremely Critical levels (IPC AMN Phase 5) of acute malnutrition – i.e. about every third child in these districts is suffering from acute malnutrition. Six other districts have Critical levels (IPC AMN Phase 4) of acute malnutrition. Although the 6 districts are classified in IPC AMN Phase 4, 2 of them have acute malnutrition levels very close to IPC AMN Phase 5. Where – Among the 8 drought affected districts notified by the Government of Sindh in 2018, the districts with Extremely Critical levels (IPC AMN Phase 5) of acute malnutrition are namely Tharparkar and Umerkot. The other 6 districts – Jamshoro, Kambar Shahdadkot, Badin, Dadu, Sanghar, and Thatta – are classified as being in IPC AMN Phase 4. Of these 6 districts, 2 of them, i.e. Kambar Shahdadkot and Badin, have acute malnutrition levels very close to IPC AMN Phase 5. Why – The major factors contributing to acute malnutrition include very poor quality and quantity of food, high food insecurity, poor sanitation coverage, and high incidence of low birthweight.

ESMF Consultant1 has been commissioned by Directorate of Urban Policy & Strategic Planning to fulfil World Bank Operational Policies and to prepare “Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) for MSAN Project” at its inception stage via assessing the project’s environmental and social viability through various environmental components like air, water, noise, land, ecology along with the parameters of human interest and mitigating adverse impacts along with chalking out of guidelines, SOPs, procedure for detailed EA during project execution. The project has two components under Inter Sectoral Nutrition Strategy of Sindh (INSS), i) the sanitation component of the project aligns with the Government of Sindh’s sanitation intervention known as Saaf Suthro Sindh (SSS) in 13 districts in the province and aims to increase the number of ODF villages through certification while ii) the agriculture for nutrition (A4N) component includes pilot targeting beneficiaries for household production and consumption of healthier foods through increased household food production in 20 Union Councils of 4 districts. Saaf Suthro Sindh (SSS) This component of the project will be sponsored by Local Government and Housing Town Planning Department, Sindh and executed by Local Government Department (LGD) through NGOs working for the Inter-sectoral Nutrition Support Program.
