Assessorato Regionale, Dipartimento dei Beni Culturali Città di Acireale Lions Club Acireale e dell’Identità Siciliana Assessorato Regionale, Dipartimento dei Beni Culturali e dell’Identità Siciliana Città di Acireale Lions Club Acireale Collection of historical uniforms Ing. Aldo Scaccianoce Lions Club Acireale Anno Sociale 2012-2013 Presidente Rosario Musmeci Galatea Editrice - Acireale INTRODUCTION The collection of uniforms located in the Town Hall takes its name from the scholar Aldo Scaccianoce, who gathered each piece. The relics shown have a double significance: historical and artistic. Every piece has its own historical story to tell, as they have all been worn during events that have shaped European history over the course of the XIX century, while the nineteenth century has been pregnant with highly artistic cultural moments since the Napoleonic period. These relics, in fact, also give testimony of fashion, taste, make and aesthetic quality that make them real masterpieces of craftsmanship. The Assessorato ai Beni Culturali (Department of Cultural Heritage) of the Region of Sicily added the collection to its priceless patrimony in 1988, to avoid the dispersal of the important cultural collection. The exposition installation was done by the architect Giuseppe Anfuso. Within each single cabinet each relic preserves its historical, military and artistic relevance. PREFACE The work presented is born from the desire of the Lions Club Aci- reale to give service to the town of Acireale, favouring its tourism, and with it, its economy.

In a previous life Jerry was a sports reporter and a straight college student. He dropped out, visited Cuba and moved to Berkeley where he became known as the P. T. Barnum of the revolution, organizing spectacular events such as marathon Vietnam Day marches, teach-ins, International Days of Protest. Jerry lived for three years near the University of California working as an Outside Agitator to destroy the university. He ran for Mayor of Berkeley and came within one heart attack of winning in a four-man race. Jerry moved to New York in October 1967 and became Project Director of the March on the Pentagon. He appeared before "witch-hunt" committees of Congress dressed as an American Revolutionary War soldier, a bare-chested, armed guerrilla and Santa Claus. With Abbie Hoffman, Jerry created the Yippies as a fusion between the hippies and the New Left, and helped mJ>f>ilize the demonstrations during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August 1968. The U.S. Government indicted Jerry and seven other revolutionaries for conspiracy to destroy the Democratic Convention, resulting in "The Conspiracy," perhaps the most important political trial in the history of the country. Jerry wants to hear your reactions to this book.

1 John Dovey Missing Voices Project 14/02/08 TAPE ONE SIDE A Interviewer Give me a bit of your background. John I grew up in Maritzburg. My parents were divorced when I was 4, and my father remarried again shortly after, so I stayed with him. So I grew up there with him in Maritzburg. He was in the police for a few years, and then I think he spent a year in the traffic department. And then started working at the university where he worked till he retired a few years ago. I had a, I think, a difference of opinion with a lot of my friends. A lot of my friends were talking about ducking out of the army and that kind of shit. The typical kind of English speaking attitude here in Natal was very much one of we don’t want to go, that kind of stuff. But from the first year that I registered, which was my standard 8 year when I turned 16, I volunteered for Spesmagte. And then the next year and the next year again, and when I got my call up it was to Spesmagte HQ in Pretoria. So the 10th of January 1985 I arrived in the train at Voortrekkerhoogte, climbed off the train at the sports field there, the typical thing, all thousand people arriving. And there was a corporal with a maroon beret who picked us up, into a vehicle, we went off to SAMS HQ, and they told us, because there were too many of us, not enough space, at Spes Kop.

Jan Chalupa Acknowledgements I would like to express my gratitude to Mgr. Radek Vogel, PhD. for his patience, guidance and precious advice during writing this thesis as well as the help with the topic. Abstract Although many research studies were devoted to etymologically themed works, there is no publication that is concerned specifically with male fashion. Therefore, this thesis focuses on the development of the terminology of male fashion. The aim of this thesis is to ascertain the etymological background of the terms of male fashion concerning the language origin, time period and word formation. The first part of the thesis is devoted to outlining the related of linguistic concepts, followed by a brief history of the English language and a brief history of fashion. The last chapter is devoted to the analysis of the terminology that is based on the corpus included in the appendix.

  • The Military Habitus and Identities of Former Zimbabwean Soldiers in South Africa
Soldiers in Exile: The military habitus and identities of former Zimbabwean soldiers in South Africa Godfrey Maringira University of the Western Cape, Department of Anthropology and Sociology Supervisor: Prof. Diana Gibson University of the Western Cape Department of Anthropology and Sociology Co-Supervisor: Prof. Annemiek Richters Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, the Netherlands Department of Public Health and Primary Care & Amsterdam School of Social Science Research, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands Co-supervisor: Dr Lorena Nunez Carrasco University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg Department of Sociology Thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Sociology of the University of the Western Cape: Nov 2014 1 ABSTRACT After analysing stories of 44 former soldiers from Zimbabwe (39 army deserters and 5 who resigned from the army), I argue that even though they were disillusioned by the Zimbabwe National Army's conduct both in war and during peacetime deployment, in exile in South Africa they continue to hold on to their military identities. While in many studies trained soldiers are presented as capable of becoming civilians in post-combat life, my thesis points to the difficulties associated with such a process. Even though scholars present military identities as fluid, I argue that it is also deeply embodied and expressed through ‘bodily disposition’. In substantiating my argument, I employ Bourdieu’s (1990) theory of habitus and field, to reveal how what was learned in the military is difficult to unlearn. I argue that the practice of clinging onto a soldierly identity is a social and economic resource for the former soldiers who became my research participants.
