This research examines the impact of electronics on the flautist. It explores and confronts this expanding musicological nexus through forwarding the voice of the performer: defining the search for knowledge through the actuality of performance, reflection and narrative. The investigation is based around two recitals of music for flute with electronics, incorporating ideas of spatialisation and interactive live electronics. These recitals presented music by Jean-Claude Risset, Mario Lavista, Thea Musgrave, Marco Stroppa, Kaija Saariaho, Russell Pinkston, Warren Burt and Georg Hajdu. The structure for the research is based on the model of this experience, a journey of evolving understanding corresponding to the processes of performance: conception, preparation, presentation and reflection. This model proposes a framework for musicological investigation incorporating a comprehensive survey of repertoire and literature, considerations of technological functionality, and personal engagement with specific music, techniques and performance. The use of electronics to reveal elements of electroacoustic performance informs and positions the research, and raises questions for analysis and further explorations and understanding. The ‘site of discovery’ here is the performance; the goal is to demystify, renew, and re-evaluate the performer’s world. Building on and finding support in research from an emerging body of discourse in the wider field, the discussion and findings are primarily addressed through self-observation, based on the author’s experience as performer, as flautist. Thus these findings display significant partiality, as they aim to expand understandings of performance with electronics from within; to articulate knowledge revealed only through engagement with performance itself, and to provide a platform for the performer as writer. The focus on the self in this research approach promotes further understanding of how a performer or listener engages with the sonic, emotional, conceptual and connective capacities of the music. The project draws together historical perspectives, performance and reflective ii The Extended Flautist critiques, documentation of the processes of performance, the connections to technology, to others and the self. The embodiment of music through learning, rehearsal and performance is a journey that leads to the revelation of otherwise inaccessible performance knowledge. This revelation is approached here through centering the research on this very act. It is the doing, the experience, and the observation of performance with electronics that creates the responses and material of this discourse. The instrumentalist, electronics and space become an entity, a meta-instrument, incited by the microphone to construct new sounds, new expression and new identities. Renewed playing perspectives and actions, the disclosure of intuitive responses and newly evolving partnerships emerge with the knowledge of process and defined approaches. New representations of the self in sound, new awareness and perception of the performative body, connections and exchange, unveil a relocated, reshaped performing persona. The Extended Flautist traces this performative journey through a discursive musicology, an embodied scholarly encounter of narrative, analysis and performance. An enactive performance practice is revealed, a transformative musicality teeming with renewed approaches to sonority, physicality, performance space, partnerships, self-perception and expression. iii The Extended Flautist STATEMENT OF AUTHENTICITY The work contained in this dissertation is that of Jean Penny and has not previously been submitted for an award at any other higher education institution.     THE LATVIAN NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA INVITES YOU TO THE INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP FOR YOUNG COMPOSERS Latvia’s top symphonic player, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO), reintroduces the international workshop for young composers. Andris Dzenītis, one of Latvia’s most excellent composers, developed the tradition by attracting numerous young authors to workshops in various Latvia’s cities – Dundaga, Cēsis, and Mazsalaca. The workshops will take place on 19–23 August, 2019, in Rēzekne – a city in the heart of Latvia’s most peculiar region Latgale. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to draw inspiration from the oldest layers of North Latgale’s traditional music. The workshop lecturers are: Andris Dzenītis (Latvia), Marco Stroppa (Italy/Germany), and Anders Nordentoft (Denmark). The workshop will conclude with a performance of the participants’ new works in the opening concert of the LNSO Summer Festival at the Latgale Embassy GORS Small Hall. THEME – METAMORPHOSIS OF NORTHERN LATGALE’S TRADITIONAL SONGS LATGALE is a glorious lakeland in the southeast of Latvia. It is the poorest and the wealthiest part of the country simultaneously: a region with the least successful economy and the richest traditional culture and music. Historically, the territory of Latvia (and Estonia) adopted Lutheranism in the 16th century, except for Latgale, which was under Polish rule at the time and remained Catholic. Another specific feature of Latgale is that the majority of population speak the Latgalian, or High Latvian language. This form of Latvian has its own literature, and the relation between the Latvian of the Lutheran regions and Latgale’s High Latvian makes an approximate analogy to the relation between the High German and Low German or even High German and Dutch.

Live performance-based electronic music indicates a composition by which the vocal, instrumental and/or electronic sounds are processed in real time. By surveying historical developments, technological advances, aesthetics, and important figures, this document intends to assist singers in gaining a global perspective of the field in hopes of facilitating interest in the performing and commissioning of live electronic vocal compositions. An important element of this thesis is an annotated appendix of computer-based live and interactive electronic vocal music detailing instrumentation, technical requirements, texts, performance notes and publisher contact information. In order to assist in the study and performance of these works, relevant performance issues are explored, and a methodology and step-by-step checklist for learning contemporary and electronic vocal music is included. An analysis of three vocal works in this genre is presented: En Écho by Philippe Manoury, Erba nera che cresci segno nero tu l!il!i by Mauro Lanza, and a new work commissioned especially for this study, Avant la lawe by David Adamcyk. Le cadre de la création d’Initiale (le musée de la Menil Collection à Houston tout juste inauguré) ne pouvait que séduire le compositeur : Renzo Piano était l’architecte de ce musée d’art contemporain, situé près de la Rothko Chapel commandée également par les collectionneurs Dominique et John de Menil. La division de l’effectif en deux groupes instrumentaux se prête à la spatialisation, bien qu’elle ne soit pas spécifiée dans la partition. La figure mélodique de la première page – un motif d’arpège ascendant, typiquement boulézien – sert de matrice à toute l’œuvre, où se succèdent de brèves sections différenciées par leur tempo, leur rythme, leur phrasé et leur écriture.
