The most important event of 2009 concerning Turkey- Armenia relations is the signing of two protocols between the two countries in order to normalize relations. The highly comprehensive Facts and Comments of this issue has only been devoted to this subject. The English texts of the protocols have been given at the end of our Journal in the Recent Documents section. The Magazine “L’Histoire” published in France has devoted their April 2009 issue to Armenian Genocide allegations and have published interviews conducted with some Turkish scholars for this purpose. The well known historian Prof. Norman Stone and doctoral student Maxime Gauin have written an article criticizing one of these interviews. Since the Magazine “L’Histoire” has refrained from publishing this article, we are doing it under the title Reply to L’Histoire. In Armenia, each year in May, the Sedarabad “victory” of 1918 towards the Ottoman forces is being celebrated. However, no such defeat is mentioned in the Turkish EDITORIAL NOTE historical sources which indicate that some fighting took place during the advancement of Ottoman armies towards Baku which has occurred in the region of Serdarabad. Musa Gürbüz, in his article entitled Turkish Military Activities in the Caucasus following the 1917 Russian Revolution: the Battle of Sardarabad and Its Political Consequences, examines this fighting according to the Turkish and Armenian sources. Recently, the efforts to normalize Turkey-Armenia relations created an increase in the interest for this subject and some think-tanks have convened conferences and written reports relating to this matter. In his article entitled Turkish-Armenian Relations and the Think-Tank Effects, Aslan Yavuz fiir examines some reports and articles published from 2007 onwards concerning this subject, puts forth the recommended policy choices and future speculations, and attempts to answer some questions. Erman fiahin, in his article entitled The Armenian Question: Scholarly Ethics and Methodology, examines some ethical problems arising from an article published by two Turkish authors relating to the Hrant Dink case. Review of Armenian Studies 5 No. 19-20, 2009 Two conference reports can be found in this issue of our Journal. The first entitled World Congress of the International Institute of Sociology has been written by Ayflegül Baydar Ayd›ngün; the second relating to the conference organized by the Political Psychological Association is entitled Turkish-Armenia Relations from Past to Present: An Interdisciplinary Approach and has been written by Aslan Yavuz fiir. One book review, seven archival documents and three recent documents can be found in this issue of our Journal. Dönem Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi’nde İkinci Grup Gülay SARIÇOBAN* Abstract The First Turkish Grand National Assembly, called the First Parliament in the history of our Republic, is the most significant and important mission of our recent history. In fact, it is an extraordinary assembly that has achieved such a challenging task as the National Struggle with an endless effort. The ideas contained within each community reflect the pains they have experienced during the development process. Different ideas and methods gave the Parliament a colorful and dynamic structure. We can call the struggle between the First and Second Groups in the First Parliament as the pro-secular progressives and the reigners who defended the Otto- man order. The first group represented the power and the second group represented the opposition. Therefore, the First Group was the implementing side and the Second Group was a critic of these practices. The Second Group argued that in terms of their ideas, not just of their time, has also been the source of many political con- flicts in the Republic of Turkey. Thus, the Second Group has marked the next political developments. The Se- cond Group, which played such an important role, forced us to do such work. Our aim is to put forward the task undertaken by the Second Group until its dissolution. In this study, we try to evaluate the Second Group with the ideas it represents, its effectiveness within the Parliament and its contribution to the political developments.

    CENTRAL BANK OF THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA OF THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA 2012 YEREVAN 2013 Arthur Javadyan Chairman of the Central Bank of Armenia Dear reader The annual journal "Collector Coins of the Republic of Armenia 2012" presents the collector coins issued by the Central Bank of Armenia in 2012 on occasion of important celebrations and events of the year. 4 The year 2012 was full of landmark events at both international and local levels. Armenia's capital Yerevan was proclaimed the 12th International Book 2012 Capital, and in the timespan from April 22, 2012 to April 22, 2013 large-scale measures and festivities were held not only in Armenia but also abroad. The book festival got together the world's writers, publishers, librarians, book traders and, in general, booklovers everywhere. The year saw a great diversity of events which were held in cooperation with other countries. Those events included book exhibitions, international fairs, contests ("Best Collector Coins CENTRAL BANK OF THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA Literary Work", "Best Thematic Posters"), a variety of projects ("Give-A-Book Day"), workshops, and film premieres. The Central Bank of Armenia celebrated the book festival by issuing the collector coin "500th Anniversary of Armenian Book Printing". In 2012, the 20th anniversaries of formation of Armenian Army and liberation of Shushi were celebrated with great enthusiasm. On this occasion, the Central Bank of Armenia issued the gold and silver coins "20th Anniversary of Formation of Armenian Army" and the gold coin "20th Anniversary of Liberation of Shushi". The 20th anniversary of signing Collective Security Treaty and the 10 years of the Organization of Treaty were celebrated by issuing a collector coin dedicated to those landmark events.

In the center is a depiction of Mount Ararat with Noah's Ark sitting atop it. According to tradition, the ark is said to have finally rested on the mountain after the great flood. Ararat is considered the national symbol of Armenia and thus is of principle importance to the coat of arms. Surrounding Mount Ararat are symbols of old Armenian dynasties. In the lower left portion of the shield, there are two eagles looking at each other, symbolizing the length of the Armenian territory during the reign of the Artaxiad Dynasty that ruled in the 1st century BC.

  • Affirming Genocide Knowledge Through Rituals
    6 Affirming Genocide Knowledge through Rituals Parts I and II of this book examined the emergence of repertoires of knowledge regarding the Armenian genocide through social interaction, objectified thought processes, bearing witness, and the involvement of knowledge entrepreneurs. We saw how knowledge generated through these processes took radically different shapes as it became sedimented within each of two distinct carrier groups, Arme- nians and Turks. Oppositional worldviews and associated knowledge reper toires are not unique to this case, of course. We find them, for example, when those who recognize the role of human action in global warming encounter others who see a Chinese conspiracy at work, aimed at harming the U.S. economy. Or again, when those who know that liberal or social democracy will secure a prosperous and secure future disagree with followers of populist authoritarian leaders and parties. The question arises of how each collectivity deals with the challenges posed by the other side. Now, in part III, we encounter two strategies commonly deployed in struggles over knowledge. While chapters 7 and 8 address conflictual engagement with the opposing side in the realms of politics and law, and chapter 9 explores counterpro- ductive effects of denial in an age of human rights hegemony, the present chapter examines the use of elaborate public rituals toward the reaffirmation of genocide knowledge within each of the contending collectivities. We owe early social-scientific insights into the role of rituals in social life to Émile Durkheim. In his book The Elementary Forms of Religious Life, Durkheim ([1912] 2001) tells us about the ability of rituals to sanctify objects and charge sym- bols that represent them with a special energy.
